Melatonin duration gates photoperiodic vocal state change in a songbird.

Seasonally breeding animals concentrate courtship to a particular time of year such that their offspring will be reared in a favorable environment. In house sparrows, Passer domesticus, primary (gonads) and secondary (song, plumage, beak color, etc) sexual characteristics are expressed differentially depending on the photoperiod. Removal of the pineal gland (PINX) has no effect on seasonal rhythms in gonad size but alters the photostimulated increase in vocal rate and complexity. Administration of long durations of melatonin, indicative of short days of winter, prevents seasonal recrudescence

Effects of experimental light at night on extra-pair paternity in a songbird.

Light pollution is increasing worldwide and significantly affects animal behavior. In birds, these effects include advancement of morning activity and onset of dawn song, which may affect extra-pair paternity. Advanced dawn song of males may stimulate females to engage in extra-pair copulations, and the earlier activity onset may affect the males' mate guarding behavior. Earlier work showed an effect of light at night on extra-pair behavior, but this was in an area with other anthropogenic disturbances. Here, we present a two-year experimental study on effects of light at night on extra-pair p

Dietary exposure to methylmercury affects flight endurance in a migratory songbird.

Although there has been much speculation in the literature that methylmercury (MeHg) exposure can reduce songbird fitness, little is known about its effects on migration. Migrating songbirds typically make multiple flights, stopping to refuel for short periods between flights. How refueling at MeHg-contaminated stopover sites would contribute to MeHg bioaccumulation, and how such exposure could affect subsequent flight performance during migration has not been determined. In a dosing experiment we show that migratory yellow-rumped warblers (Setophaga coronata) rapidly accumulate dietary MeHg i

The song must go on: resilience of the songbird vocal motor pathway.

Stereotyped sequences of neural activity underlie learned vocal behavior in songbirds; principle neurons in the cortical motor nucleus HVC fire in stereotyped sequences with millisecond precision across multiple renditions of a song. The geometry of neural connections underlying these sequences is not known in detail though feed-forward chains are commonly assumed in theoretical models of sequential neural activity. In songbirds, a well-defined cortical-thalamic motor circuit exists but little is known the fine-grain structure of connections within each song nucleus. To examine whether the str

Neural distribution of vasotocin receptor mRNA in two species of songbird.

The neurohypophyseal hormones vasopressin and oxytocin are produced and released within the mammalian brain, where they act via multiple receptor subtypes. The neural distributions of these receptors, for example, V1a and oxytocin receptors, have been well described in many mammals. In birds, the distribution of binding sites for the homologous neuropeptides, vasotocin (VT) and mesotocin, has been studied in several species by using synthetic radioligands designed to bind to mammalian receptors. Such binding studies, however, may not reveal the specific distributions of each receptor subtype.

Short-term gonadal cultures are sufficient for germline transmission in a songbird.

Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are reproductive stem cells that are valuable for avian biobanking and germline transmission. However, their long-term culture remains a challenge beyond a few poultry species. Here, we compare the transcriptomic impact and reproductive viability between short- and long-term chicken and zebra finch gonadal PGC culture protocols. Using single-cell transcriptomics, we identified rapid germline differentiation in zebra finch gonadal cultures compared to stable PGC identity in chicken, highlighting divergent signaling pathway responses to in vitro germline culture betw

Feeding performance, kinematics and skills change with age in a granivorous songbird.

Changes in neuromuscular performance owing to maturation and ageing affect a wide range of motor behaviours in birds and mammals. The consequences may be especially pronounced during forceful and complex movements, such as feeding on seeds in songbirds, which require well-developed jaw muscles and fast, strongly coordinated beak and tongue movements. We investigated how feeding performance changes with age by filming juvenile and adult domestic canaries repeatedly over a span of two years with high-speed video. We extracted metrics of feeding performance, beak kinematics and seed handling skil

Host Disease Tolerance Predicts Transmission Probability for a Songbird Pathogen.

Disease tolerance reduces the per-pathogen fitness costs of infection for hosts and is an important component of host adaptation to pathogens. However, how disease tolerance affects host transmission potential is not well understood, especially because there are many potential mechanisms that facilitate host tolerance. For example, tissue-specific host tolerance leads to the reduction of host pathology, regardless of pathogen load. Hosts may also exhibit behavioral tolerance, where normal behaviors are maintained even while harboring high pathogen loads. Here, we examined the impacts that tiss

Genetic Basis and Evolution of Structural Color Polymorphism in an Australian Songbird.

Island organisms often evolve phenotypes divergent from their mainland counterparts, providing a useful system for studying adaptation under differential selection. In the white-winged fairywren (Malurus leucopterus), subspecies on two islands have a black nuptial plumage whereas the subspecies on the Australian mainland has a blue nuptial plumage. The black subspecies have a feather nanostructure that could in principle produce a blue structural color, suggesting a blue ancestor. An earlier study proposed independent evolution of melanism on the islands based on the history of subspecies dive

A neural circuit for vocal production responds to viscerosensory input in the songbird.

Motor performance is monitored continuously by specialized brain circuits and used adaptively to modify behavior on a moment-to-moment basis and over longer time periods. During vocal behaviors, such as singing in songbirds, internal evaluation of motor performance relies on sensory input from the auditory and vocal-respiratory systems. Sensory input from the auditory system to the motor system, often referred to as auditory feedback, has been well studied in singing zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), but little is known about how and where nonauditory sensory feedback is evaluated. Here we

Mercury causes degradation of spatial cognition in a model songbird species.

Mercury is a widespread pollutant of increasing global concern that exhibits a broad range of deleterious effects on organisms, including birds. Because the developing brain is well-known to be particularly vulnerable to the neurotoxic insults of mercury, many studies have focused on developmental effects such as on the embryonic brain and resulting behavioral impairment in adults. It is not well understood how the timing of exposure, for example exclusively in ovo versus throughout life, influences the impact of mercury. Using dietary exposure to environmentally relevant methylmercury concent

Experimental Exposure to Noise Alters Gut Microbiota in a Captive Songbird.

Noise pollution is an unprecedented evolutionary pressure on wild animals that can lead to alteration of stress hormone levels and changes in foraging behavior. Both corticosterone and feeding behavior can have direct effects on gut bacteria, as well as indirect effects through changes in gut physiology. Therefore, we hypothesized that exposure to noise will alter gut microbial communities via indirect effects on glucocorticoids and foraging behaviors. We exposed captive white-crowned sparrows to city-like noise and measured each individuals' corticosterone level, food intake, and gut microbia

Vocal and social impairments in songbirds embryonically exposed to an autism risk factor.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are complex neurodevelopmental conditions marked by social communication deficits. Although rodent and chicken models have yielded insights into social and sensory abnormalities, their innate vocalizations preclude the study of vocal learning impairments common to autism. Leveraging the vocal learning abilities of zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), we investigated how embryonic exposure to valproic acid (VPA) affects vocal development and social behavior. VPA exposure disrupted song acquisition, resulting in impaired tutor imitation, delayed song consolidation

Profiling of systemic and brain steroids in male songbirds: Seasonal changes in neurosteroids.

Steroids are secreted by the gonads and adrenal glands into the blood to modulate neurophysiology and behaviour. In addition, the brain can metabolise circulating steroids and synthesise steroids de novo. Songbirds show high levels of neurosteroid synthesis. In the present study, we developed and validated a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) assay for the measurement of 10 steroids in whole blood, plasma and microdissected brain tissue (1-2 mg) of song sparrows. Our assay is highly accurate, precise, specific and sensitive. Moreover, the liquid-liquid extraction is fast

Mercury contamination in resident and migrant songbirds and potential effects on body condition.

Methlymercury is a significant risk to environmental health globally. We examined the ecological drivers of methylmercury bioaccumulation in songbirds and its effect on body condition while experimentally removing the potentially confounding and predominant effects of site and habitat. We measured blood and feather mercury concentrations and body condition in nearly 1200 individuals representing resident or migrant songbirds of 52 species and 5 foraging guilds. Songbird mercury concentrations differed among species, foraging guilds, residency status, dates, and ages, but not sexes. Blood mercu

Learning to breathe and sing: development of respiratory-vocal coordination in young songbirds.

How do animals with learned vocalizations coordinate vocal production with respiration? Songbirds such as the zebra finch learn their songs, beginning with highly variable babbling vocalizations known as subsong. After several weeks of practice, zebra finches are able to produce a precisely timed pattern of syllables and silences, precisely coordinated with expiratory and inspiratory pulses (Franz M, Goller F. J Neurobiol 51: 129-141, 2002). While respiration in adult song is well described, relatively little is known about respiratory patterns in subsong or about the processes by which respir

Salmonellosis in songbirds in the Canadian Atlantic provinces during winter-summer 1997-98.

From winter 1997 to summer 1998, an epizootic of salmonellosis affected several species of songbirds over a large area of the eastern North American continent. This article describes the details of this epizootic in the Canadian Atlantic provinces, based on laboratory examination of dead affected birds and on suspected but unconfirmed cases of salmonellosis reported by members of the public. The common redpoll (Carduelis flammea) was the species most often affected, followed by pine siskins (C. pinus), purple finches (Carpodacus purpureus), evening grosbeaks (Coccothraustes vespertinus), and A

Understanding sources of methylmercury in songbirds with stable mercury isotopes: Challenges and future directions.

Mercury (Hg) stable isotope analysis is an emerging technique that has contributed to a better understanding of many aspects of the biogeochemical cycling of Hg in the environment. However, no study has yet evaluated its usefulness in elucidating the sources of methylmercury (MeHg) in songbird species, a common organism for biomonitoring of Hg in forested ecosystems. In the present pilot study, we examined stable mercury isotope ratios in blood of 4 species of songbirds and the invertebrates they are likely foraging on in multiple habitats in a small watershed of mixed forest and wetlands in A

Co-infections and transmission dynamics in a tick-borne bacterium community exposed to songbirds.

We investigated the transmission dynamics of a community of tick-borne pathogenic bacteria in a common European songbird (Parus major). Tick-naïve birds were infested with three successive batches (spaced 5 days apart) of field-collected Ixodes ricinus nymphs, carrying the following tick-borne bacteria: Rickettsia helvetica (16.9%), Borrelia garinii (1.9%), Borrelia miyamotoi (1.6%), Anaplasma phagocytophilum (1.2%) and Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis (0.4%). Fed ticks were screened for the pathogens after moulting to the next developmental phase. We found evidence for early transmission (w

Nomadic songbirds achieve rapid increases in thermogenic capacity during cold acclimation while maintaining low corticosterone.

Migrating animals can track resources to maximize energy intake, but moving may also expose them to rapid changes in weather that require thermogenic defense. The Migratory Flexibility Hypothesis predicts that migrants exposed to variable conditions may need to be more flexible in thermogenic response. Here, we investigate metabolic flexibility of the red crossbill (Loxia curvirostra), an altitudinal and latitudinal nomad that experiences wide variability in climate, to determine how flexibility in migration relates to thermogenic flexibility. Two ecotypes of captive red crossbill (Type 3 and
