Design and Analysis of a Contact Piezo Microphone for Recording Tracheal Breathing Sounds.

Analysis of tracheal breathing sounds (TBS) is a significant area of study in medical diagnostics and monitoring for respiratory diseases and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Recorded at the suprasternal notch, TBS can provide detailed insights into the respiratory system's functioning and health. This method has been particularly useful for non-invasive assessments and is used in various clinical settings, such as OSA, asthma, respiratory infectious diseases, lung function, and detection during either wakefulness or sleep. One of the challenges and limitations of TBS recording is the background

A description of externally recorded womb sounds in human subjects during gestation.

OBJECTIVE: Reducing environmental noise benefits premature infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), but excessive reduction may lead to sensory deprivation, compromising development. Instead of minimal noise levels, environments that mimic intrauterine soundscapes may facilitate infant development by providing a sound environment reflecting fetal life. This soundscape may support autonomic and emotional development in preterm infants. We aimed to assess the efficacy and feasibility of external non-invasive recordings in pregnant women, endeavoring to capture intra-abdominal or womb sou

Variability and repeatability of perineal sound recording in a population of healthy male volunteers.

OBJECTIVES: In a population of 16 healthy male volunteers we studied the variability and repeatability of perineal sound recording as a non-invasive method for diagnosing bladder outlet obstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The volunteers had a flat age-distribution (22-62 years), a median IPSS-score of 1 (range: 0-18) and voided at least 10 times. From each perineal sound recording the frequency spectrum was calculated and characterized by its weighted average frequency, standard deviation and skewness. We assessed the variability of these parameters using the Kruskal-Wallis test, differences

The optimal method for recording prosthetic heart valve sounds in clinical situations.

BACKGROUND: Valve sounds are thought to be useful in evaluating the functioning of prosthetic heart valves. In previous reports, two recording instruments have mainly been used, a condenser microphone (instrument A) and an accelerometer (instrument B), respectively. This study aimed to investigate the applicability of these conventional devices in recording mechanical heart valve sounds in daily clinical situations. In addition, two other instruments, namely, a stethoscope including a small microphone in its tube (instrument C) and an electrostethoscope (instrument D), were proposed and examin

Noninvasive detection of intracranial vascular lesions by recording blood flow sounds.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transorbital blood flow sound recordings have the potential to be used for noninvasive detection of cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. We describe our system and experience in detecting intracranial cerebrovascular disease. METHODS: We investigated the noninvasive detection of intracranial vascular lesions by recording and analyzing the intracranial blood flow sounds. A new small transducer was placed on the unilateral eyelid to record the intracranial blood flow sounds, which were amplified and converted to digital data at a sampling frequency of 2000

A dataset of lung sounds recorded from the chest wall using an electronic stethoscope.

The advancement of stethoscope technology has enabled high quality recording of patient sounds. We used an electronic stethoscope to record lung sounds from healthy and unhealthy subjects. The dataset includes sounds from seven ailments (i.e., asthma, heart failure, pneumonia, bronchitis, pleural effusion, lung fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)) as well as normal breathing sounds. The dataset presented in this article contains the audio recordings from the examination of the chest wall at various vantage points. The stethoscope placement on the subject was determined b

The use of sound recording and oxygen saturation in screening snorers for obstructive sleep apnoea.

It is desirable to screen snoring patients for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) prior to surgical treatment. We postulated that the addition of a sound profile would increase the value of overnight oxygen saturation (SaO2) as a screening method. Thirty-nine polysomnographic studies including sound level measured by calibrated meter were performed on snorers being considered for uvulopalato-pharyngoplasty (UPPP). Polysomnography showed an apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI) > or = 15 per hour of sleep in seven subjects. Two experienced observers independently, without knowledge of other data, classified

Segmentation of Radar-Recorded Heart Sound Signals Using Bidirectional LSTM Networks.

Sounds caused by the action of the heart reflect both its health as well as deficiencies and are examined by physicians since antiquity. Pathologies of the valves, e.g. insufficiencies and stenosis, cardiac effusion, arrhythmia, inflammation of the surrounding tissue and other diagnosis can be reached by experienced physicians. However, practice is needed to assess the findings correctly. Furthermore, stethoscopes do not allow for long-term monitoring of a patient. Recently, radar technology has shown the ability to perform continuous touchless and thereby burden-free heart sound measurements.

Wheezing recognition algorithm using recordings of respiratory sounds at the mouth in a pediatric population.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory diseases in children are a common reason for physician visits. A diagnostic difficulty arises when parents hear wheezing that is no longer present during the medical consultation. Thus, an outpatient objective tool for recognition of wheezing is of clinical value. METHOD: We developed a wheezing recognition algorithm from recorded respiratory sounds with a Smartphone placed near the mouth. A total of 186 recordings were obtained in a pediatric emergency department, mostly in toddlers (mean age 20 months). After exclusion of recordings with artefacts and those with a si

Simultaneous High-Speed Video Laryngoscopy and Acoustic Aerodynamic Recordings during Vocal Onset of Variable Sound Pressure Level: A Preliminary Study.

UNLABELLED: Voicing: requires frequent starts and stops at various sound pressure levels (SPL) and frequencies. Prior investigations using rigid laryngoscopy with oral endoscopy have shown variations in the duration of the vibration delay between normal and abnormal subjects. However, these studies were not physiological because the larynx was viewed using rigid endoscopes. We adapted a method to perform to perform simultaneous high-speed naso-endoscopic video while simultaneously acquiring the sound pressure, fundamental frequency, airflow rate, and subglottic pressure. This study aimed to in

Associations between recorded tracheal sound and guardian-reported snoring frequency and loudness in children.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep apnea is a major pediatric sleep health issue. Although many epidemiological studies rely on guardian-reported snoring as a surrogate for sleep apnea, the accuracy of such data remains unclear. This study examines associations between guardian-reported snoring and objective snoring parameters derived from tracheal sound measurements. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 555 first- and second-grade Japanese elementary school children. Snoring frequency and loudness were reported by their guardians through questionnaires. Objective snoring data were derived f

A new neurogenic vestibular evoked potential (N6) recorded with the use of air-conducted sound.

INTRODUCTION: Neurogenic vestibular evoked potentials that are recorded from the scalp have so far been recorded in the form of N3 (click air-conducted), N5 (tone air-conducted), and P10 (bone-conducted stimulus) waveforms. The purpose of this study is to find other vestibular waveforms obtained with air-conducted sound. METHODS: The experiments were organized into 4 parts: 1) topographic scalp mapping; 2) determining the consistency in appearance of candidate vestibular waveforms; 3) further characteristics such as their relationship to vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, sensitivity to 5

Predicting Polysomnography Parameters from Anthropometric Features and Breathing Sounds Recorded during Wakefulness.

BACKGROUND: The apnea/hypopnea index (AHI) is the primary outcome of a polysomnography assessment (PSG) for determining obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity. However, other OSA severity parameters (i.e., total arousal index, mean oxygen saturation (SpO2%), etc.) are crucial for a full diagnosis of OSA and deciding on a treatment option. PSG assessments and home sleep tests measure these parameters, but there is no screening tool to estimate or predict the OSA severity parameters other than the AHI. In this study, we investigated whether a combination of breathing sounds recorded during wakef

Comparison of snoring sounds between natural and drug-induced sleep recorded using a smartphone.

OBJECTIVES: Snoring is an important clinical feature of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and recent studies suggest that the acoustic quality of snoring sounds is markedly different in drug-induced sleep compared with natural sleep. However, considering differences in sound recording methods and analysis parameters, further studies are required. This study explored whether acoustic analysis of drug-induced sleep is useful as a screening test that reflects the characteristics of natural sleep in snoring patients. SUBJECTS AND MATERIALS: The snoring sounds of 30 male subjects (mean age=41.8years)
