Peak-to-peak glottal flow amplitude as a function of F(0).

This study investigated the peak-to-peak (p-t-p) amplitude of the voice source as a function of fundamental frequency (F(0)). Nine males and nine females with or without singing training produced (1) a glissando from lowest to highest F(0) and back in their speaking range on /a:/ and (2) an ascending-descending scale pattern on /pa:pa:/. Audio and airflow signals were recorded, the latter picked up from a pneumotach mask. F(0) was measured from the audio signal and the oral pressure during the /p/ occlusion for an estimate of subglottal pressure. Airflow signal was inverse filtered and the p-t

Characteristics of lung sounds in early infants using automated analysis.

UNLABELLED: A new lung sound analysis software program has been developed. It can automatically select a typical lung sound spectrogram and calculate lung sound parameters using machine learning programs. This study aimed to clarify lung sound characteristics in early infants using this program. Using the program, the characteristics of lung sounds in healthy 1- and 4-month-old infants were examined. The lung sounds were assessed in the supine position for 1-month-old infants and in both the sitting and supine positions for 4-month-old infants. We compared the characteristics of the infant lun

Behavior of captive herring exposed to naval sonar transmissions (1.0-1.6 kHz) throughout a yearly cycle.

Atlantic herring, Clupea harengus, is a hearing specialist, and several studies have demonstrated strong responses to man-made noise, for example, from an approaching vessel. To avoid negative impacts from naval sonar operations, a set of studies of reaction patters of herring to low-frequency (1.0-1.5 kHz) naval sonar signals has been undertaken. This paper presents herring reactions to sonar signals and other stimuli when kept in captivity under detailed acoustic and video monitoring. Throughout the experiment, spanning three seasons of a year, the fish did not react significantly to sonar s

Fourier analysis of infantile stridor: preliminary data.

Preliminary data from 3 patients suggest that computerized (Fourier) analysis of infantile stridor can be instructive. Several recordings are quickly collected with a microphone and digital oscilloscope at the patient's bedside. The data are later sent to a computer for spectral analysis. Averaging of several spectra from each patient depicts only those sounds that are consistent from sample to sample. Subtraction of background noise from the averaged stridor removes all but those sounds that are produced by the patient. The results show that the spectra are relatively consistent from sample t

The memory of the new-born baby.

In a pilot study 28 new-born babies (average age about 38 hours) were investigated to see whether they could already recognise their mother's voice and other sounds to which they had been exposed before birth. More than half of the babies who could be observed while awake did indeed appear to pay special attention to their mother's voice, but not to any other woman's voice, nor to a lullaby which the mother had played to them regularly in late pregnancy. Most of the new-born babies, who had been regularly exposed to an alarming noise in late pregnancy, were not startled by such a noise, either

Shifts in acoustic signature of Southern Hemisphere fin whales: Declining peak frequency of high-frequency components.

Population-specific acoustic features are vital for using passive acoustic monitoring to study marine mammal populations in remote regions. Southern Hemisphere fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) songs include region-specific high-frequency components, with the 86- and 99-Hz high-frequency components present in the Atlantic Sector of the Southern Ocean. Using long-term passive acoustic monitoring data, we show that, despite gradual interannual and intra-annual variabilities, these features remain distinct and recognizable across regions and years. Our findings support their use as reliable acous

Click detection rate variability of central North Pacific sperm whales from passive acoustic towed arrays.

Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is an optimal method for detecting and monitoring cetaceans as they frequently produce sound while underwater. Cue counting, counting acoustic cues of deep-diving cetaceans instead of animals, is an alternative method for density estimation, but requires an average cue production rate to convert cue density to animal density. Limited information about click rates exists for sperm whales in the central North Pacific Ocean. In the absence of acoustic tag data, we used towed hydrophone array data to calculate the first sperm whale click rates from this region and

Japanese macaque phonatory physiology.

Although the call repertoire and its communicative function are relatively well explored in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), little empirical data are available on the physics and the physiology of this species' vocal production mechanism. Here, a 6 year old female Japanese macaque was trained to phonate under an operant conditioning paradigm. The resulting 'coo' calls and spontaneously uttered 'growl' and 'chirp' calls were recorded with sound pressure level (SPL) calibrated microphones and electroglottography (EGG), a non-invasive method for assessing the dynamics of phonation. A total of

Final consonants and glottalization: new perspectives from Hanoi Vietnamese.

The evolution from final obstruents to final glottal stop and then to rhyme glottalization (i.e. from /at/ to /a?/, then to /a'/) is a well-established general trend in the history of the Sino-Tibetan language family and beyond. It has further been shown by laryngoscopy that in three languages which retain the nonreleased syllable-final obstruents /p/, /t/ and /k/ (Standard Thai, and two Chinese dialects), these obstruents are often accompanied by a glottal stop. The present research raises the issue whether there is another typological possibility: can nonreleased final obstruents be accompan

A new acoustic method of differentiating palatal from non-palatal snoring.

Palatal snoring produces explosive peaks of sound at very low frequency (approximately 20 Hz). Using a digital sound trace a ratio of peak amplitude to root mean square amplitude can be calculated. This Peak Factor Ratio is significantly higher for palatal snores than non-palatal snores (P < 0.01). This acoustic method will be useful for selecting patients for palatal surgery as it is non-invasive and could be used in a home monitor.

[Phonetograms in laryngeal lesions due to vocal abuse].

Using this test, we measure maximum and minimum vocal capacity (sound pressure in dB) from the lowest to the highest frequency that a person can emit and sustain. These measurements are represented on an easily interpreted graph that allows the magnitude of the vocal area to be evaluated. We made phonetograms of persons with nodules (3), polyps (16) and Reinke edema (10) and compared their results to those of a group of 25 healthy subjects. The vocal fields of patients with laryngeal polyp and Reinke's edema were severely reduced.

Evaluation of dysphonia in a children's choir.

This study isolates the voice problems of 99 (40 male, 59 female) children choir singers (age range: 8-14), by applying and validating a simple method for classifying the singing voice. The prevalence of dysphonia was 20.2%. A singing range of fewer than 18 semitones is considered to suggest dysphonia (sensitivity of 80% and specificity of 95%). The validity of the method and its ease of application are discussed. We conclude that voice classification is necessary for all children who sing and that phoniatric examination of dysphonic children is imperative, with special attention given to thos

Transglottal pressures in professional singing.

Using high-frequency miniature pressure transducers, direct measurements of sub- and supra-glottal pressure are taken on two sopranos singing high notes, in a range where F1 is close to F0. When the peak in supraglottal pressure occurs well into the open phase of the glottal cycle, the instantaneous transglottal pressure approaches zero. When this peak occurs later in one of the subjects as a feature of the vibrato modulation, the transglottal pressure even drops appreciably below zero. The implications of these findings for the glottal volume velocity waveform, as well as for the singer's exp

Sound production mechanisms of audible nasal emission during the sibilant /s/.

Audible nasal emission is a speech disorder that involves undesired sound generated by airflow into the nasal cavity during production of oral sounds. This disorder is associated with small-to-medium sized velopharyngeal openings. These openings induce turbulence in the nasal cavity, which in turn produces sound. The purpose of this study is to examine the aeroacoustic mechanisms that generate turbulent sound during production of a sibilant /s/ with and without a small opening of the velopharyngeal valve. The models are based on two pediatric subjects who were diagnosed with severe audible nas

Source levels of the underwater calls of a male leopard seal.

Leopard seals (Hydrurga leptonyx) are top predators in the Antarctic ecosystem. They produce stereotyped calls as part of a stylized underwater vocal display. Understanding of their acoustic behavior is improved by identifying the amplitude of their calls. The amplitude of five types of calls (n = 50) from a single male seal were measured as broadband source levels and ranged from 153 to 177 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m. The mean source levels differed between call types, the lower frequency calls (L, D, and O) tended to have source levels 10 dB higher than the higher frequency calls (H and M). Informat

Heart sounds interference cancellation in lung sounds.

Several attempts have been made to achieve a quantitative analysis of lung sounds mainly for two purposes: a) an understanding of their genesis, and b) an insight of their changes with pathologies for medical diagnosis. Early studies involved the collection of acoustic information at several positions on the thoracic surface or at the extra-thoracic trachea with one up to four microphones, but with a non-simultaneous acquisition. However, an increment for simultaneous acquisition points has been suggested; for example, as a consequence of multichannel acquisition acoustic visualization through
