Developmental outcomes after soybean oil vs mixed-oil intravenous lipid emulsions in neonates: A secondary analysis of a clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Fatty acids make up a significant portion of brain mass. The choice of lipid injectable emulsion alters a patient's fatty acid profile. In neonates with intestinal failure dependent on parenteral nutrition, this is particularly concerning given their rapid brain development. METHODS: We randomly assigned 24 infants to receive soy oil lipid emulsion at 1 g/kg/day or mixed-oil lipid emulsion containing soy, medium-chain triglyceride, olive, and fish oils at 3 g/kg/day. We have previously reported data on intestinal failure-associated liver disease incidence with a 39-day median foll

Understanding the Role of Individual Tocopherol Homologues on the Shelf Life of Refined Soybean Oil.

Refined vegetable oils depend on tocopherols as their primary natural antioxidants, yet their behavior differs from that observed in model-stripped systems. This study evaluated how tocopherol homologue degradation relates to the lipid oxidation lag phase in refined soybean oil (RSO) and stripped soybean oil (SSO). Tocopherol depletion, lipid hydroperoxides, and headspace hexanal were monitored during accelerated oxidation at 55 °C. In RSO, α-tocopherol depletion coincided with the end of the hexanal lag phase (12 days), despite 56% and 74% of (γ+β)- and δ-tocopherol remaining, respectively, s

Optimization and application of methods of triacylglycerol evaluation for characterization of olive oil adulteration by soybean oil with HPLC-APCI-MS-MS.

Triacylglycerols (TAGs) are the main constituents of vegetable oils where they occur in complex mixtures with characteristic distributions. Mass spectrometry using an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization interface (APCI-MS) run in positive mode and an Ion Trap mass analyser were applied in the study of olive and soybean oils and their mixtures. Direct injections of soybean and olive oil solutions allowed the identification of ions derived from the main TAGs of both oils. This procedure showed to be a simple and powerful tool to evaluate mixtures or addition of soybean to olive oil. TAG sep

Effects of oxidized soybean oil on the performance of sows and jejunum health of suckling piglets.

Oils provide a considerable amount of energy to the swine diet, but they are prone to lipid oxidation if not properly preserved. Consumption of oxidized oils can adversely affect the animal organism and even the offspring. This study investigated the impact of oxidized soybean oil in the diets of sows from 107 days gestation to 21 days of lactation on the performance of sows and jejunum health of suckling piglets. Sixteen sows were randomly allocated into two groups: one group (n = 8) was fed with the fresh soybean oil (FSO) diet, and another group (n = 8) was treated with the oxidized soybean

Solution-blown PAN/Congo red nanofibrous sensors for colorimetric detection of soybean oil oxidation.

Recognizing the importance of cooking oil quality and the potential health risks associated with oxidation, this study developed an indirect-contact nanofiber-based system for detecting cooking oil oxidation. The effects of spinning parameters on sensor sensitivity were investigated. Eight nanofiber mats (MAT I-VIII) were fabricated using different needle sizes (21 G and 18 G), polymer concentrations (12% and 15%), and air pressures (0.5 and 2 MPa). Congo red was incorporated into polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber mats using a solution-blowing technique. The mats were characterized by scanning

Hemostatic and Wound Healing Nonisocyanate Polyhydroxyurethanes (NIPHUs) Dressings from Soybean Oil: In Vivo Characterization.

Wound healing is a dynamic process that consists of four stages: hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and remodeling. Some alterations in this process can lead to fatal adverse effects such as bleeding or chronic wound formation. Thus, the use of appropriate dressings is necessary to allow for hemostasis and healing to take place properly. Nonisocyanate polyhydroxyurethanes (NIPHUs) have emerged as a more sustainable alternative for biomaterials. Thus, the aim was to evaluate the wound healing capacity of four new NIPHUs with different ratios of amines used. The water vapor transmission ra

Fully Erasable Amphibious Adhesives Derived from Soybean Oil with Record-High Underwater Adhesion Strength.

Developing amphibious adhesives that combine high adhesion strength with on-demand erasability in both dry and wet environments remains a significant challenge. In this study, biomass-derived, amphibious, and erasable adhesives are fabricated by grafting 3-aminobenzoic acid and 3-aminobenzeneboronic acid onto epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), yielding ESO-Am adhesives. These adhesives are dynamically cross-linked with boroxines, hydrogen bonds, and hydrogen-bonded hydrophobic nanodomains. ESO-Am adhesives exhibit strong and durable adhesion to a wide range of substrates under dry conditions, with

The Dietary Replacement of Soybean Oil by Canola Oil Does Not Prevent Liver Fatty Acid Accumulation and Liver Inflammation in Mice.

A high-carbohydrate diet (HCD) is a well-established experimental model of accelerated liver fatty acid (FA) deposition and inflammation. In this study, we evaluated whether canola oil can prevent these physiopathological changes. We evaluated hepatic FA accumulation and inflammation in mice fed with a HCD (72.1% carbohydrates) and either canola oil (C group) or soybean oil (S group) as a lipid source for 0, 7, 14, 28, or 56 days. Liver FA compositions were analyzed by gas chromatography. The mRNA expression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1 (ACC1) was measured as an indicator of lipogenesis. The mR

Impact of soybean oil lipid emulsion on clinical outcomes in critically ill pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Lipid emulsions are key components of parenteral nutrition (PN); however, concerns persist that soybean oil-based lipid emulsions may increase the risk of infection and catheter occlusion. In pediatric intensive care settings, evidence on the safety of these emulsions remains limited. This study investigated the impact of soybean oil-based lipid emulsion on central venous catheter-related complications and clinical outcomes in children receiving PN in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective study of children admitted to th

Partially replacing dietary starch with soybean oil improved production performance of weaned Rex rabbits.

The differences between the high-starch diet commonly used in rabbit farming and the natural feeding habits of rabbits may pose certain health risks. In our study, we replaced part of the starch in the feed with soybean oil and conducted a 4-wk feeding trial with weaned Rex rabbits. The results indicated that rabbits fed the oil-supplemented diet had a lower incidence of diarrhea, improved growth performance, and higher feed conversion efficiency, along with increased absorptive capacity of small intestine. Additionally, the composition of the cecal contents and fermentation patterns were alte

Oxidized Soybean Oil Evoked Hepatic Fatty Acid Metabolism Disturbance in Rats and their Offspring.

The oxidation of fats and oils is an undisputed subject of science, given the effect of oxidized fats and oils on food quality and safety. This study aimed to determine whether maternal exposure to oxidized soybean oil (OSO) causes lipid metabolism disorders in the liver and whether this lipid metabolism disorder can be transmitted to offspring or even worsened. A total of 60 female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were divided randomly into four groups in this study. Treatment groups received a pure diet of OSO with a peroxide value of 200, 400, or 800 mEqO2/kg, while the control group received fresh

SMOFlipid vs Intralipid 20%: Effect of Mixed-Oil vs Soybean-Oil Emulsion on Parenteral Nutrition-Associated Cholestasis in the Neonatal Population.

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is critical for the growth and development of premature neonates who are unable to reach nutrition goals enterally. Using soybean-oil emulsions in PN is a risk factor for cholestasis, leading to alternative dosing strategies including a reduction in total lipid prescribed. Recently, SMOFlipid has been utilized with the goal of avoiding cholestasis while maintaining energy intake. The aim of our study was to compare the incidence of PN-associated cholestasis (PNAC) in patients admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) who received either Intralipi
