Effects of space flight on Xenopus laevis larval development.

Fifty-three fertilized Xenopus laevis embryos at early tail bud stage were launched into orbit aboard a Biocosmos satellite and remained in microgravity for 11.5 days. During this period, the embryos hatched and continued to develop as free-living larvae. Forty-eight individuals survived the mission. Upon recovery these tadpoles had smaller heads/bodies and proportionately longer tails than ground controls. Almost all the flight animals had caudal lordosis and consequently swam in backward somersaults. Compared to ground-based controls, their notochords were significantly larger in cross-secti

Artificial gravity as a countermeasure in long-duration space flight.

Long-duration exposure to weightlessness results in bone demineralization, muscle atrophy, cardiovascular deconditioning, altered sensory-motor control, and central nervous system reorganizations. Exercise countermeasures and body loading methods so far employed have failed to prevent these changes. A human mission to Mars might last 2 or 3 years and without effective countermeasures could result in dangerous levels of bone and muscle loss. Artificial gravity generated by rotation of an entire space vehicle or of an inner chamber could be used to prevent structural changes. Some of the physica

Neurobiological problems in long-term deep space flights.

Future missions in space may involve long-term travel beyond the magnetic field of the Earth, subjecting astronauts to radiation hazards posed by solar flares and galactic cosmic rays, altered gravitation fields and physiological stress. Thus, it is critical to determine if there will be any reversible or irreversible, detrimental neurological effects from this prolonged exposure to space. A question of particular importance focuses on the long-term effects of the space environment on the central nervous system (CNS) neuroplasticity, with the potential acute and/or delayed effects that such pe

[Effect of long space flights on amino acid metabolism].

The amino acid composition of the plasma and serum of Salyut-6 crewmembers who performed flights of different duration was investigated. The parameter was found to vary depending on the flight time and use of different countermeasures. The 75- and 185-day cosmonauts who did not exercise in a full measure showed a decrease in the amino acid pool typical of emergency situations. The 96-, 140- and 175-day crewmembers who exercised as prescribed exhibited the lack of changes in the total content of amino acids and variations in the content of individual amino acids. The results of the study of the

Skin microbiome considerations for long haul space flights.

Dysbiosis of the human skin microbiome has long been associated with changes to the pH of the skin, dermal immune function and chronic skin conditions. Dermatological issues have been noted as the most prevalent medical presentation in the microgravity environment of space. The change in gravitational forces has been implicated in human immuno-suppression, also impacted by changes in the gastrointestinal-skin axis and its impact on Vitamin D metabolism, altered microbial gene expression in resident flora (leading changes in biofilm formation) and increased virulence factors in potential pathog

Physiological Alterations in Relation to Space Flight: The Role of Nutrition.

Astronauts exhibit several pathophysiological changes due to a variety of stressors related to the space environment, including microgravity, space radiation, isolation, and confinement. Space motion sickness, bone and muscle mass loss, cardiovascular deconditioning and neuro-ocular syndrome are some of the spaceflight-induced effects on human health. Optimal nutrition is of the utmost importance, and-in combination with other measures, such as physical activity and pharmacological treatment-has a key role in mitigating many of the above conditions, including bone and muscle mass loss. Since t

[Prospects for using ultraviolet radiation in protracted space flights].

The data concerning UV-effects on the human body and the environment are reviewed as applied to long-term flights. It is concluded that UV-radiation can be used in long-term space flights in view of its vitamin-forming, desensitizing, bactericidal, and supporting properties to improve the environment and to prevent adverse effects of space flight factors.

Cardiovascular adaptations, fluid shifts, and countermeasures related to space flight.

Significant progress has been made related to understanding cardiovascular adaptations to microgravity and development of countermeasures to improve crew re-adaptation to gravity. The primary ongoing issues are orthostatic intolerance after flight, reduced exercise capacity, the effect of vascular-smooth muscle loss on other physiologic systems, development of efficient and low-cost countermeasures to counteract these losses, and an understanding of fluid shift mechanisms. Previous animal studies of cardiovascular adaptations offer evidence that prolonged microgravity remodels walls of blood v

[Biomedical results of the Space Shuttle Orbital Flight Test Program].

On July 4, 1982 the Space Shuttle Columbia landed at Edwards Air Force Base, California, thus successfully completing the fourth and last in a series of Orbital Flight Tests (OFT) of the Space Transportation System (STS). The primary goal of medical operation support for the OFT was to assure the health and well-being of flight personnel during all phases of the mission. To this end, the crew health status was evaluated preflight, inflight and postflight. Biomedical flight test requirements were completed in the following areas: physiological adaptation to microgravity, cabin acoustical noise,

[Activation of respiratory sinus arrhythmia in monkeys during space flight].

During the first day in space the rhesus monkey, called Vernyi, flown on Cosmos-1667 showed higher values of the daytime, night, and daily respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) when compared to those observed before launch and before or the first day of a simulation study. During orbital flight, the mean daily value of RSA was in the range 13.08-16.00 beats/min. In the simulation study, this parameter increased from 4.68 beats/min during the first day to 15.16 beats/min on the 6th day. The mean RSA values during days 1 through 3 were significantly higher in real than in simulation flight. Analysi

[Doctor, may I travel in space? Aeromedical considerations regarding commercial suborbital space flights].

Within a few years, the first commercial operators will start flying passengers on suborbital flights to the verge of space. Medical data on the effects of space journeys on humans have mainly been provided by professional astronauts. There is very little research into the aeromedical consequences of suborbital flights for the health of untrained passengers. Low air pressure and oxygen tension can be compensated for by pressurising the spacecraft or pressure suit. Rapid changes in gravitational (G-)force pose ultimate challenges to cardiovascular adaptation mechanisms. Zero-gravity and G-force

Changes of hormones regulating electrolyte metabolism after space flight and hypokinesia.

The changes of hormones in plasma involved in the body fluid regulation were studied in human subjects during and after space flights in relation to redistribution of body fluids in the state of weightlessness. Since hypokinesia was used as a model for simulation of some effects of the stay in microgravity the plasma hormone levels in rats exposed to hypokinesia were also investigated. Plasma aldosterone values showed great individual variations during the first inflight days, the increased levels were observed with prolongation of space flights. The important elevation was found in the recove

Frequency and Clinical Features of Space Headache Experienced by Astronauts During Long-Haul Space Flights.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Few anecdotal cases and 1 small retrospective study during short-duration space missions suggest that headache may occur early in flight, as part of the space motion syndrome. Whether headaches may also occur at later stages of space flights is unknown. We aimed to prospectively characterize the incidence, timing, clinical features, and management of space headaches during long-duration flights. METHODS: We prospectively evaluated the occurrence, characteristics, and evolution of space headaches and the effects of treatment and countermeasures during long-haul fligh

Sudden emesis following parabolic flight maneuvers: implications for space motion sickness.

Episodes of emesis unaccompanied by the usual prodromal signs of motion sickness have been reported by astronauts in the space shuttle program (10). Such reports have raised the issue whether space motion sickness has different characteristics from terrestrial motion sickness. We present evidence here from parabolic flight experiments that sudden vomiting can occur in response to a provocative vestibular stimulus even when no premonitory symptoms are being experienced. Accordingly, in chronic exposure conditions, the absence of prominent signs or symptoms of motion sickness does not necessaril

Summing-up cosmonaut participation in long-term space flights.

The health condition and work capacity of space travellers during many flights remained adequate. Medical examinations performed during and after space flights consistently revealed the following symptom-complexes: space motion sickness, changes in the muscles system, hemodynamics, fluid-electrolyte balance and its regulation, calcium metabolism and bone density, transient erythrocytopenia and immunity decline. This paper presents a detailed discussion of the changes observed in space flight.

Oxygen regimen in the human peripheral tissue during space flights.

A survey of the results of the experiment "Oxygen," carried out within the scope of the INTER-KOSMOS program in members of the permanent crews and of international visiting expeditions to the Soviet orbital station Salyut-6, is given. During the 7-day space flights of the international visiting expeditions a significant decrease in pO2ic by 3.28 kPa was observed. Local oxygen utilization reduced significantly by 0.44 kPa. During hyperventilation testing after return to earth a statistically significant decrease in the peak value by 1.39 kPa was noted. In the long-term crews of the orbital stat

Some results of the effect of space flight factors on Drosophila melanogaster.

Two experiments with Drosophila melanogaster males were performed aboard the Salyut 6 orbital station. Mutagenic effects of a 8 day space flight on sex chromosome nondisjunction and intergene recombination in chromosome II were studied. The space flight factors (SFF) increased the frequency of chromosome nondisjunction and recombination. The model experiments showed that the combined effects of vibration and acceleration do not cover the whole spectrum of space flight mutagenic factors. These data suggest that heavy space ions are mainly responsible for the observed effect.
