Comparison of postural control and space perception outcomes between robotic and conventional cochlear implantation in adults.

PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to capture the difference between the groups in direct relation to the type of electrode array insertion during cochlear implantation (CI). The robotic insertion is expected to be a more gently option. As recent studies have shown, there is a difference in perception of visual vertical (SVV) and postural control related to the CI. We assume that there can be differences in postural control and space perception outcomes depending on the type of the surgical method. METHODS: In total, 37 (24 females, mean age ± SD was 42.9 ± 13.0) candidates for CI underwent an

Critical roles for distance, task, and motion in space perception: initial conceptual framework and practical implications.

OBJECTIVE: A conceptual framework of visual space perception is proposed. BACKGROUND: Prior studies suggest that the processes underlying space perception depend on viewing distance, the nature of a task, and the presence and nature of motion. METHOD: Evidence from neuropsychological, neuroimaging, and behavioral studies is reviewed. RESULTS: A preliminary conceptual framework of space perception is proposed in which three critical factors of distance, task, and motion represent different dimensions. Different locations within the framework represent the involvement of different underlying

Chinese Children with Congenital and Acquired Blindness Represent Concrete Concepts in Vertical Space through Tactile Perception.

Many studies have tested perceptual symbols in conceptual processing and found that perceptual symbols contain experiences from multisensory channels. However, whether the disability of one sensory channel affects the processing of the perceptual symbols and then affects conceptual processing is still unknown. This line of research would extend the perceptual symbol theory and have implications for language rehabilitation and mental health for people with disabilities. Therefore, the present study filled in this gap and tested whether Chinese children with congenital and acquired blindness hav

Effect of virtual walk in green or urban spaces on pain perception among healthy adults.

Humans are deeply rooted in the natural environment. Contact with a green natural environment can affect pain perception. There are indications that a virtual analog of the natural environment may have a beneficial effect on pain perception. The aim of our study was to assess the potential effects of virtual walking in a green environment (virtual green garden) or a virtual urban environment on pain intensity, pain unpleasantness, pain tolerance, and affective state during the generated pain experience. The study was experimental in nature, in which 81 adults participated: 40 participants were

Protection of office buildings and spaces: A balanced approach to perception of terrorism risk in the common workspace.

The scholarly literature regarding soft target terrorism indicates a likely shift from acts of terror against hardened targets to attacks against easier, softer targets. Office buildings and spaces, by their often open and inviting nature and capacity to house large numbers of people, fit within the commonly accepted model of soft targets. They are also designated by the US Department of Homeland Security as components of critical infrastructure. The literature, however, identifies very little terrorist threat in the ordinary work environment. To better understand the history of and potential

No effect of the short-term learning of object trajectories on multisensory perception within the peripersonal space.

Peripersonal space, the space immediately surrounding the body, functions as an interface between the self and the external environment. In interactions with dynamic environments, not only bodily information but also accurate estimation of the dynamics of external objects is required. While numerous studies have demonstrated that real-time estimation of object dynamics, based on bottom-up mechanisms, modulates peripersonal space representation, little evidence supports the involvement of top-down knowledge about object dynamics in shaping peripersonal space. In the present study, we conducted

Contributions of the glottal source and vocal tract cues to emotional vowel perception in the valence-arousal space.

Motivated by the source-filter model of speech production, analysis of emotional speech based on the inverse-filtering method has been extensively conducted. The relative contribution of the glottal source and vocal tract cues to perception of emotions in speech is still unclear, especially after removing the effects of the known dominant factors (e.g., F0, intensity, and duration). In this present study, the glottal source and vocal tract parameters were estimated in a simultaneous manner, modified in a controlled way and then used for resynthesizing emotional Japanese vowels by applying a re

Effects of electrode size and spacing on sensory modalities in the phantom thumb perception area for the forearm amputees.

Tactile sensory feedback plays a key role in accomplishing the dexterous manipulation of prosthetic hands for the amputees, and the non-invasive transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) of the phantom finger perception (PFP) area would be an effective way to realize sensory feedback clinically. In order to realize the high-spatial-resolution tactile sensory feedback in the PFP region, we investigated the effects of electrode size and spacing on the tactile sensations for potentially optimizing the surface electrode array configuration. Six forearm-amputated subjects were recruited in

[Psychotropic effects of captopril? Effect of a short-term treatment on reaction and concentration capabilities and space perception ability].

In a randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind trial 22 healthy normotensive young men (mean age 25 +/- 1.7 years) were given a single oral dose of 50 mg captopril or a placebo (11 subjects each). To test their concentration and proficiency, as well as spatial perception and reaction capacity four tests were administered: attention, concentration, hose-pattern perception and "Bonn Determination Device". Captopril had no negative effects on any test performances either one or five hours after its administration, or after a single daily dose for seven days. There was only a small, statisticall

Assessing e-scooter rider safety perceptions in shared spaces: Evidence from a video experiment in Sweden.

Shared spaces prioritise the role of micromobility in urban environments by separating vulnerable road users from motorised vehicles, aiming to enhance both actual and perceived safety. However, the presence of various transport modes, such as pedestrians, cyclists and e-scooters, with differing navigation behaviours, increases the heterogeneity of these spaces and impacts the perception of safety. Despite the increasing use of e-scooters, the safety perceptions of e-scooter riders remain largely underexplored in the literature. In response, I conducted an online video experiment and polled 92

Somewhere to be permanent for a minute: Time and space perceptions of older adult men experiencing chronic homelessness in Detroit.

Within the landscape of postwar era Detroit, space is vast, but places are hard to find. As people tumble down the side of Maslow's pyramid into abject homelessness, they attempt to anchor themselves in locations that suspend the otherwise situational free fall. This article analyzes how time and space are perceived by people experiencing chronic homelessness and how those individual perceptions are informed by the objective time and space urban environment. We conducted our community-based participatory research into the experiences of chronic homelessness both from perspectives of chronicall

Evolution of Characteristic Aroma During Processing of Space-Induced Mutant Dahongpao Tea and the Preliminary Exploration of Its Olfactory Perception.

Space-induced mutation is a novel approach in tea plant breeding, but its effect on processing-induced aroma formation remains unclear. This study analyzed the dynamic changes in VOCs during the processing of space-induced mutants of Dahongpao tea. The results showed that processing significantly reshaped the VOC profile, with the fermentation stage exerting the greatest impact and terpenoids serving as the major contributors. Seven characteristic VOCs (α-phellandrene, β-phellandrene, d-sylvestrene, iso-geraniol, seudenone, hexyl benzene, and nerol) were identified and a transformation network

Access to physical activity among people incarcerated: Jail staff perceptions of gender, work opportunities, and physical space.

BACKGROUND: There has been a surge in female incarceration in the United States in the last decade, and research indicates that women who are incarcerated are among the most likely to experience poor health outcomes. Physical activity is known to improve health and research that has explored women's physical activity in incarcerated settings has been mostly conducted in prisons, with little research in jail populations. OBJECTIVES: This project explores jail staff perceptions of differences in access to physical activity between women and men incarcerated in a US jail to identify potential ad

Silhouettes, number Location, and cube analysis tests from the VOSP battery reveal visual object and space perception deficits in early Alzheimer's disease.

The Visual Object and Space Perception Battery (VOSP) is a widely used tool for evaluating higher visual processing. However, limited information exists regarding its diagnostic utility in differentiating mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia (MD) due to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) from cognitively normal older adults (CG). This study aimed to evaluate VOSP tests for object perception (silhouettes) and space perception (number location and cube analysis) as diagnostic tools for the early detection of AD. This study included 81 participants (28 with MD, 27 with MCI, and 26 in the CG).

From "physical repair" to "mental resonance": spatial perception and behavioral reshaping pathways in the renewal of lost under-bridge spaces.

INTRODUCTION: Urban under-bridge spaces are often regarded as typical "lost spaces" due to ambiguous boundaries, limited functions, and fragmented management. While existing regeneration practices have largely focused on functional supplementation, safety governance, and the maintenance of spatial order, the mechanisms through which physical environmental qualities are translated into public interaction behaviors via users' psychological experiences remain theoretically underspecified. METHODS: Grounded in environmental behavior theory and adopting a mixed-methods research design, this study

Validating Grading of Aesthetic Outcomes of Web Space Reconstruction for Finger Syndactyly: Crowdsourcing Public Perceptions Using Amazon Mechanical Turk.

BACKGROUND: It has recently been attempted in the literature to analyze the aesthetic outcomes of syndactyly web space reconstruction utilizing dorsal pentagonal advancement flaps and dorsal rectangular flaps with skin grafting. The study utilized a categorical grading system for evaluating the aesthetic outcomes of reconstruction to be used in conjunction with a visual analog scale (VAS), which has yet to be validated in the assessment of aesthetic outcomes following web space reconstruction. OBJECTIVES: To utilize crowdsourced public perceptions to validate the grading of aesthetic outcomes

Beyond multisensory peripersonal space: Multiple origins of tactile facilitation induced by approaching stimuli.

Whether reaching for an object or avoiding a potential threat, our ability to interact with the world relies on anticipating physical contact with nearby objects. This ability is thought to depend on the facilitation of tactile processing whenever an object enters the region surrounding the body where physical interaction is possible, referred to as 'peripersonal space'. Traditionally, these facilitation effects have been ascribed to the activity of the peripersonal neurons, which show maximal responses when tactile stimuli on the body co-occur with nearby visual or auditory stimuli, and would

Peripersonal space: why so last-second?

A vast range of neurophysiological, neuropsychological and behavioural results in monkeys and humans have shown that the immediate surroundings of the body, also known as peripersonal space (PPS), are processed in a unique way. Three roles have been ascribed to PPS mechanisms: to react to threats, to avoid obstacles and to act on objects. However, in many circumstances, one does not wait for objects or agents to enter PPS to plan these behaviours. Typically, one has more chances to survive if one starts running away from the lion when one sees it in the distance than if it is a few steps away.
