Moving through imagined space: Mentally simulating locomotion during spatial description reading.

Readers mentally simulate the perceptual and motoric elements related through text. Sound is one perceptual characteristic of these embodied simulations that has received little attention. Two experiments tested whether movement sounds (walking vs. running) or metronome pulses (fast vs. slow) would modulate reading speed and memory for two different types of spatial descriptions, route and survey. Route descriptions describe environments from a first-person, ground-level perspective whereas survey descriptions use an aerial overview perspective. Experiment 1 demonstrated that route description

Hearing and performance during a 70-h exposure to noise simulating the space station environment.

INTRODUCTION: Elevated hearing thresholds have been documented in some astronauts after long-term spaceflights although noise levels were lower than those normally associated with noise-induced hearing loss in ground-based operations. The present study was conducted to determine whether prolonged exposure (70 h) to levels (72 dBA) recorded on the International Space Station (ISS) service module would impact diverse measures of auditory function, as well as cognition and memory, motivation, and cardiovascular function. METHOD: Five mixed gender subgroups of five normal-hearing subjects, aged 2

Galactic cosmic ray simulation at the NASA space radiation laboratory - Progress, challenges and recommendations on mixed-field effects.

For missions beyond low Earth orbit to the moon or Mars, space explorers will encounter a complex radiation field composed of various ion species with a broad range of energies. Such missions pose significant radiation protection challenges that need to be solved in order to minimize exposures and associated health risks. An innovative galactic cosmic ray simulator (GCRsim) was recently developed at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The GCRsim technology is intended to represent major components of the space radiation environment in a ground an

Resilience of Hybrid Bioelectrodes in an Ionizing Environment: A Space Simulation Study of Limnospira indica Under Gamma Radiation.

Cyanobacteria possess unique biological properties and the ability to perform life-sustaining processes, which make them useful for applications in space exploration and colonization. Their potential use in bioelectricity and fuel production has garnered significant interest. This study explores the effects of ionizing radiation on the cyanobacterium Limnospira indica used in bioelectrodes. This is an important consideration as radiation levels in space are significantly higher than those experienced on Earth with its protective atmosphere and magnetosphere. In an approximate space radiation s

Ice-man Down: Using Simulation to Practice the Safe Extrication of Collapsed Hockey Players in a Confined Space.

Sporting event emergencies are common among both spectators and players, with unique sets of challenges associated with patient extrication in unfamiliar and chaotic environments. It is critical for sports physicians and trainers to deliberately train and prepare for emergent situations with limited resources during athletic events. One of the most difficult, yet commonly encountered challenges is determining when and how to safely remove an injured player's helmet and sporting equipment, particularly if a spinal injury is highly suspected. We created a high-fidelity simulation case to practic

Comprehensive Atomistic Simulations of Fischer-Tropsch in Outer Space: Astrocatalysis by Fe13-Supported Nanoclusters on SiO2.

Catalytic processes are fundamental not only to terrestrial chemistry (e.g., in the synthesis of fuels, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals) but also to extraterrestrial chemistry, contributing to chemical reactions occurring in various astrophysical environments. In space, gas-phase reactions are limited due to sparse energy sources and the absence of a medium for energy dissipation, making heterogeneous catalysis on cosmic dust grains essential for driving chemical transformations. Iron nanoclusters (FeNCs) embedded on these grains present intriguing catalytic properties, especially for Fischer-T

Magnetic resonance imaging findings in the normal pediatric sacroiliac joint space that can simulate disease.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of active sacroiliac joint inflammation include joint space fluid and enhancement, but it is unclear to what extent these are present in normal children. OBJECTIVE: To describe normal MRI appearances of pediatric sacroiliac joint spaces in boys and girls of varying ages. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this ethics-approved prospective study, 251 children (119 boys, 132 girls; mean age: 12.4 years, range: 6.1-18.0 years), had both oblique-coronal T1-weighted and short tau inversion recovery (STIR) sacroiliac joint MRI. Of these, 127 were imaged

Taenia crassiceps injection into the subarachnoid space of rats simulates radiological and morphological features of racemose neurocysticercosis.

PURPOSE: Neurocysticercosis is a major public health concern. Although its eradication appears feasible, the disease remains endemic in developing countries and has emerged again in Europe and in the USA. Basic studies on neurocysticercosis are needed to better understand the pathophysiologic mechanisms and, consequently, to improve treatment perspectives. Much has been published on experimental parenchymal neurocysticercosis, but there are no experimental models of racemose neurocysticercosis. METHODS: Cysts of Taenia crassiceps were injected into the subarachnoid space of 11 rats. After 4 m

Resolving the contributions of fatigue-induced migration and scapular reorientation on the subacromial space: an orthopaedic geometric simulation analysis.

Subacromial impingement occurs when tissues interposed between the humeral head and the acromion become compressed between the bones. Two fatigue-related mechanisms are suggested to contribute to this impingement: superior humeral head migration and scapular reorientation, specifically downward rotation, anterior tilt and protraction. Although both mechanisms have received attention, controversy exists regarding their relative contributions to reducing subacromial space width. This simulation study presents a three-dimensional orthopedic model for assessing the spatial relationship between the

Evaluation by fluid/structure-interaction spinal-cord simulation of the effects of subarachnoid-space stenosis on an adjacent syrinx.

A finite-element numerical model was constructed of the spinal cord, pia mater, filum terminale, cerebrospinal fluid in the spinal subarachnoid space (SSS), and dura mater. The cord was hollowed out by a thoracic syrinx of length 140 mm, and the SSS included a stenosis of length 30 mm opposite this syrinx. The stenosis severity was varied from 0% to 90% by area. Pressure pulse excitation was applied to the model either at the cranial end of the SSS, simulating the effect of cranial arterial pulsation, or externally to the abdominal dura mater, simulating the effect of cough. A very short pulse

Numerical Simulation of Thermal Cycling and Vibration Effects on Solder Layer Reliability in High-Power Diode Lasers for Space Applications.

High-power laser diodes (HPLDs) are increasingly used in space applications, yet solder layer (SL) reliability critically limits their performance and lifespan. This study employs finite element analysis to evaluate SL failure mechanisms in microchannel-cooled HPLDs with two packaging configurations under thermal cycling and vibration. Based on the Anand constitutive model, contour plot analysis revealed that the critical stress-strain regions in both SLs were located at their edges. The stress-strain values along the X-axis of the SLs exceeded those in other axial directions, and SL failure w

Simulated Galactic Cosmic Rays effects on fungal materials: towards biotechnological radiation protection for space habitats.

PURPOSE: Human space exploration is on an upward trajectory with new space stations being manufactured for scientific experiments, industrial development, and space tourism. These spacecraft in LEO and MEO will take advantage of Earth's magnetic field for radiation protection. Astronauts on the International Space Station receive an average radiation dose of 25 µSV/hour; around 250 times greater than the average sea level dose rate. Solar activity can create an increased level of radiation that requires astronauts to stay sheltered while the solar storm hits. The Lunar Gateway, another space s

Use of 3D Printing Technology to Create a Canine Simulator for Cerebrospinal Fluid Sampling at the Lumbar Subarachnoid Space.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sampling at the lumbar subarachnoid space (LSS) is technically challenging to learn. Currently, training relies on cadaver availability or performance in a clinical scenario. This study aims to develop and validate a low-cost, high-fidelity simulator to train in this technique. Using three-dimensional printing technology, a model of a healthy adult dog's lumbosacral vertebral column was produced. The model was augmented with synthetic materials and a fluidic system to replicate all procedural steps and permit successful CSF collection. The simulator was validated by f

Time-resolved quantification of the dynamic extracellular space in the brain during short-lived event: methodology and simulations.

Two macroscopic parameters describe the interstitial diffusion of substances in the extracellular space (ECS) of the brain, the ECS volume fraction α and the diffusion tortuosity λ. Past methods based on sampling the extracellular concentration of a membrane-impermeable ion tracer, such as tetramethylammonium (TMA+), can characterize either the dynamic α(t) alone or the constant α and λ in resting state but never the dynamic α(t) and λ(t) simultaneously in short-lived brain events. In this work, we propose to use a sinusoidal method of TMA+ to provide time-resolved quantification of α(t) and λ

Biofilm and planktonic lifestyles differently support the resistance of the desert cyanobacterium Chroococcidiopsis under space and Martian simulations.

When Chroococcidiopsis sp. strain CCMEE 057 from the Sinai Desert and strain CCMEE 029 from the Negev Desert were exposed to space and Martian simulations in the dried status as biofilms or multilayered planktonic samples, the biofilms exhibited an enhanced rate of survival. Compared to strain CCMEE 029, biofilms of strain CCME 057 better tolerated UV polychromatic radiation (5 × 10(5) kJ/m(2) attenuated with a 0.1% neutral density filter) combined with space vacuum or Martian atmosphere of 780 Pa. CCMEE 029, on the other hand, failed to survive UV polychromatic doses higher than 1.5 × 10(3) k

Development of Shell-Space Electrostatic Potential Fitting Charges in a United-Atom Model for Amino Acids Simulations.

In the development of coarse-grained (CG) models, accurately capturing the electrostatic interactions between CG particles is crucial for enhancing the accuracy of these models. In this study, we developed a shell-space electrostatic potential (SS-ESP) method to derive the partial charges for CG particles by fitting the ESP of all-atom (AA) models. To validate the accuracy of the SS-ESP method, we systematically tested and compared the ESPs and electric dipole moments of CG charges obtained using four different methods, with AA models of amino acids serving as the reference. Based on the SS-ES

Scleral communication between Glaucoma drainage device capsule and the suprachoroidal space simulating amelanotic choroidal melanoma.

This is a case report involving a 56-year-old male patient with a history of pars plana vitrectomy due to a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the right eye that resulted in the implantation of a drainage device after the patient developed secondary glaucoma. Two years after the device's implantation, the patient was referred to our care as his visual acuity had decreased to 20/200 (1.00 LogMAR). At the fundus evaluation, a choroidal amelanotic elevation was observed at the upper temporal equator, and a potential diagnosis was made of amelanotic choroidal melanoma. The ultrasound exam visual

Dose simulation for the MATROSHKA-R experiment onboard the international space station using a high-fidelity model of the Zvezda module.

The MATROSHKA-R experiment conducted onboard the International Space Station provided invaluable data on depth-dose distributions for critical human organs exposed to the low Earth orbit (LEO) radiation environment. In this study, a high-fidelity computational model of a tissue-equivalent spherical phantom and a refined geometric representation of the Zvezda module were developed using the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit. In contrast to previous studies that relied on simplified cylindrical crew module models, our approach successfully and simultaneously reproduced the measured dose distributions i
