Visual and Spatial Short-term Memory in Integrative Agnosia.

The extent to which imagery and perceptual processes overlap in the brain has been the focus of a number of studies using different experimental methodologies (e.g., studies of functional brain activation and studies of patients with selective deficits following brain damage). Here we report the results of a number of different experimental investigations exploring visual memory in a patient with a severe perceptual deficit (HJA). We demonstrate that HJA can perform imagery tasks well that require judgements about a single object or object part; however, he experiences difficulty on tasks wher

Spatial memory disturbance after focal cerebral ischemia in rats.

We investigated the impairment of retention of spatial memory in rats with chronic focal cerebral ischemia, and examined the correlation between this impairment and pathological outcomes. A preoperative acquisition trial of the Morris water-maze task was performed twice a day for 14 successive days, and then the middle cerebral artery (MCA) was occluded. A retention trial was performed 8 weeks after MCA occlusion. Escape latency and swimming path length to the platform were significantly increased in MCA-occluded rats compared with those of sham-operated rats, and these deficits significantly

Spatial memory tasks in aged animals: Overcoming methodological challenges.

Memory declines in healthy aging, although deficits are heterogeneous. Implicit, procedural, and semantic memory, for example, are relatively preserved, whereas spatial abilities are particularly vulnerable. This vulnerability may reflect changes in the mechanisms underlying spatial navigation. Older adults tend to show impairments in allocentric processing, which encodes object-to-object relationships and environmental features, while relying more on egocentric, route-based strategies. Rodent studies are essential for investigating these changes. However, standard behavioral paradigms develop

How implicit social information shapes spatial memory of objects.

In our environments, we encode surrounding spatial information using egocentric (subject-to-object) and allocentric (object-to-object) reference frames. Spatial encoding, however, occurs in an environment populated by more than just “objects” but also by people, and this social information can have a significant impact on our spatial memory. Here, we investigated how implicit social information influences spatial encoding by designing a study with an explicit spatial task and implicit social cues. Participants performed a task where they memorized triads of geometric objects and provided egoce

Clozapine-N-oxide impairs spatial memory independent of DREADDs.

Chemogenetic studies using Designer Receptors Exclusively Activated by Designer Drugs (DREADDs) enable the precise manipulation of neuronal activity in specific brain regions and cell types. DREADDs are widely used to dissect neural circuits underlying animal behavior, including learning and memory. Clozapine-N-Oxide (CNO), a metabolite of clozapine and one of the earliest-developed ligands for muscarinic DREADDs, was initially considered pharmacologically inert. However, CNO is now known to undergo back-metabolism to clozapine, leading to undesired off-target behavioral effects, including alt

Spatial working memory predicts re-cancellation behaviour in neglect.

The lateralised bias of spatial neglect can be modulated by concurrent non-lateralised impairments. For instance, people with left neglect may have spatial working memory deficits that prevent them from keeping track of locations visited in visual search tasks such as target cancellation. Not only do they omit targets in some parts of the array but they may revisit and re-cancel targets in other parts, and this re-cancellation behaviour increases dramatically in 'invisible' conditions, in which touching a target leaves no visible trace. It has been proposed that spatial memory deficits are the

Olfaction alters spatial memory strategy of scatter-hoarding animals.

Although it has been suggested that olfaction is closely interconnected with hippocampal systems, whether olfaction regulates spatial memory strategy remains never known. Furthermore, no study has examined how olfaction mediates spatial memory established on the external objects, for example, caches made by scatter-hoarding animals. Here, we experimentally induced nondestructive and reversible olfaction loss of a scatter-hoarding animal Leopoldamys edwardsi, to test whether and how olfaction regulates spatial memory to mediate cache recovery and pilferage. Our results showed that the normal L.

Spatial working memory encoding type modulates prefrontal cortical activity.

Spatial working memory (SWM) involves both simultaneous and sequential encoding, but the differences in their neural correlates are unclear. We investigated the differences in prefrontal cortex activity related to these SWM encoding types. We also examined the patterns of brain activity influencing individual visuospatial abilities (VSA). We conducted SWM tasks with two different conditions, sequential and simultaneous encoding, and examined hemodynamic activity in 39 healthy adults using near-infrared spectroscopy. The bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex was activated more strongly in th

Exploration, anxiety, and spatial memory in transgenic anophthalmic mice.

Contradictory results are found in the literature concerning the role of vision in the perception of space or in spatial navigation, in part because of the lack of murine models of total blindness used so far. The authors evaluated the spatial abilities of anophthalmic transgenic mice. These mice did not differ qualitatively from their wild-type littermates in general locomotor activity, spontaneous alternation, object exploration, or anxiety, but their level of exploratory activity was generally lower. In the spatial version of the water maze, they displayed persistent thigmotaxic behavior an

Long-term spatial memory in rats with hippocampal lesions.

In animal models of human amnesia, using lesion methods, it has been difficult to establish the role played by the hippocampus in the formation of long-term spatial knowledge. For example, lesions sustained after acquisition have generally produced a flat retrograde amnesia for spatial information. These results have not made it possible to dissociate the participation of the hippocampus in retrieval/performance processes from its participation in consolidation/retention. The present study was designed to investigate if electrolytic hippocampal lesions made before training lead to a deficit in

Spatial proximity and scene grammar: shaping spatial representations for memory-guided actions in naturalistic environments.

Spatial object representations are necessary for effective goal-directed actions. These representations can be produced with respect to the self (i.e., egocentrically) and/or to surrounding objects (i.e., allocentrically). For the latter, one (spatial) factor of influence is landmark proximity to target. This factor shapes allocentric representations and informs future memory-guided actions, in both impoverished and rich scenes. More recent work has suggested that cognitive factors (e.g., object semantics) can also influence allocentric coding. Here, we investigated how both spatial and cognit

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation on spatial memory based on a spatial matching task.

Memory decline (MD) has become a critical issue affecting personal life and societal function, especially spatial memory plays a central role in daily life. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been demonstrated as an efficient neural modulation for memory, however its effects on spatial memory and underlying mechanism remain unclear. This study proposes a spatial matching paradigm with a 2-back principle to explore the enhancement of the tDCS on spatial memory. Three conditions of pre-tDCS, short-tDCS, and long-tDCS accompanied with event-related potential, brain network and beh

Spatial locations gone awry: object and spatial memory deficits in children with fetal alcohol syndrome.

Hippocampus vulnerability following gestational alcohol exposure has been demonstrated neuroanatomically and behaviorally in animal models of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). There has been no similar demonstrations in humans. The Smith and Milner (1981) Memory for 16 Objects task has been used to explore the effects of right vs left temporal lobectomy with varying degrees of damage to the hippocampus. In the present experiment, this same task was administered to 15 children with FAS (mean age 10.03, S.D. = 2.33) and 15 control children (mean age 10.02, S.D. = 2.31). Similar to patients with righ

Transection of the ventral hippocampal commissure impairs spatial reference but not contextual or spatial working memory.

Plasticity is a neural phenomenon in which experience induces long-lasting changes to neuronal circuits and is at the center of most neurobiological theories of learning and memory. However, too much plasticity is maladaptive and must be balanced with substrate stability. Area CA3 of the hippocampus provides such a balance via hemispheric lateralization, with the left hemisphere dominant in providing plasticity and the right specialized for stability. Left and right CA3 project bilaterally to CA1; however, it is not known whether this downstream merging of lateralized plasticity and stability

Development and validation of the Spatial Navigation and Memory Questionnaire (SPAM).

INTRODUCTION: Spatial navigation deficits may provide a sensitive and specific marker of early Alzheimer's disease pathology. However, few spatial navigation assessment tools are available for clinical practice that are accessible, time efficient, and sensitive to cognitive aging. METHODS: Exploratory (n = 470) and confirmatory factor analyses (n = 470) were conducted to establish the factor structure of the Spatial Navigation and Memory Questionnaire (SPAM) in healthy older adults. A subset of participants (n = 445) completed the Virtual Supermarket Test (VST) to assess convergent validity.

Spatialization in working memory and its relation to math anxiety.

Working memory (WM) is one of the most important cognitive functions that may play a role in the relation between math anxiety (MA) and math performance. The processing efficiency theory proposes that rumination and worrisome thoughts (induced by MA) result in less available WM resources (which are needed to solve math problems). At the same time, high MA individuals have lower verbal and spatial WM capacity in general. Extending these findings, we found that MA is also linked to the spatial coding of serial order in verbal WM: subjects who organize sequences from left-to-right in verbal WM sh

The Effects of Smoking Abstinence on Incentivized Spatial Working Memory.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Reward processing and working memory (WM) underlie value-based decision-making; consequently, joint examination of these systems may further our understanding of why smokers choose to smoke again following a quit attempt (relapse). While previous studies have demonstrated altered reward and WM function associated with nicotine exposure, little is known about the effects of abstinence on the joint function of these systems. The current study aims to address this gap. METHOD: Eighteen daily smokers were tested on a monetarily incentivized memory guided saccade (MGS) ta

Effects of anterior thalamic lesions on spatial memory in mice.

The present study was aimed at determining whether or not lesions of the anterior thalamic nuclei induced deficits in sequential or delayed spatial alternation (SA) in mice, these procedures enabling measures of sensitivity to interference and rate of forgetting respectively. Results showed that sequential SA comprising six successive trials separated by a 30 s inter-trial interval was not impaired by the lesion; in contrast, delayed SA in lesioned animals was impaired by a long (6 h) but not by a short (5 min) delay, compared with controls. These results support the view that lesions of anter

Multi-perspective spatial memory representation in the presence of others.

In order to better adapt to spatial environments, individuals often establish a spatial frame of reference system to represent objects and their positions within a scene. This study utilized a partial scene recognition paradigm across three experiments (n = 91, 45 men, 46 women) to investigate egocentric spatial memory representation in the presence of others, as well as the conditions that facilitate individuals’ spatial memory representation from the perspectives of others. The aim of Experiment 1 (Exp. 1) was to investigate how people formed the egocentric memory representation in the absen

Lateralisation and localisation of spatial and verbal associative recognition memory.

Episodic memory is the conscious recalling of past experiences. The neural underpinnings of this skill have long been of clinical interest, as deficits can be debilitating, including to those with temporal lobe pathology. This study sought to improve the assessment of those with unilateral temporal lobe pathology by comparing the localisation and lateralisation of successful spatial and verbal associative recognition memory using 3D time-frequency analysis and connectivity analysis of EEG data, while reducing perceptual confounds. Twenty right-handed participants aged 18 to 33 years were inclu
