Psychophysical and pupillometric study of spatial channels of visual processing in blindsight.

To date no systematic method has been used for characterising the residual capacity of blindsight subjects that would allow comparison and generalisation across all subjects. The detection of isoluminant gratings of varying spatial and temporal frequencies commends itself for detailed between-subject comparison, and for mapping results onto physiological properties in relation to neuronal circuitry. We report the ability of a blindsight subject (CS) to detect suprathreshold sine-wave gratings over a range of spatial and temporal frequencies using psychophysical techniques. A band-pass spatial

Marginally Interpretable Spatial Logistic Regression With Bridge Processes.

In including random effects to account for dependent observations, the odds ratio interpretation of logistic regression coefficients is changed from population-averaged to subject-specific. This is unappealing in many applications, motivating a rich literature on methods that maintain the marginal logistic regression structure without random effects, such as generalized estimating equations. However, for spatial data, random effect approaches are appealing in providing a full probabilistic characterization of the data that can be used for prediction. We propose a new class of spatial logistic

A bayesian analysis for spatial processes with application to disease mapping.

In epidemiology, maps of disease rates and disease risk provide a spatial perspective for researching disease aetiology. For rare diseases or when the population base is small, the rate and risk estimates may be unstable. We propose using a Bayesian analysis based on the conditional autoregressive (CAR) process that will spatially smooth disease rates or risk estimates by allowing each site to 'borrow strength' from its neighbours. Covariates may be included in the model in such a way as to establish a possible association between risk factors and disease incidence. Bayesian inferences are imp

Lateralization of spatial-memory processes: evidence on spatial span, maze learning, and memory for object locations.

Spatial memory is one of the most important cognitive functions in daily life, enabling us to locate objects in our environment or to learn a route or a path. In the present study, we elaborated on the hypothesis that human spatial memory consists of multiple sub-processes, relying on different brain structures. Therefore, 50 patients with an ischemic stroke and 40 healthy participants underwent tests measuring spatial span and maze learning. By means of a computer paradigm the following aspects of memory for object locations were assessed: (1) object location binding; (2) positional memory; (

Distinct and shared neural resources for dynamic object processing and spatial working memory.

In human brains, portions of the frontoparietal cortex respond when people reason about the physical world (e.g. track objects, make predictions), and when people engage in a variety of demanding tasks (e.g. working memory, motor inhibition). Here, we use functional neuroimaging to address an open question about whether the same neural resources support both mental functions. Twenty-eight human adults (Mage = 26.5 years; 17 female; 26 right handed) were scanned using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they (i) tracked the dynamics of physical objects (vs social agents), and (ii

Spatial and temporal processing in a subject with cortical blindness following occipital surgery.

Blindsight subjects are typically better at discriminating rapid, transient visual events than those with gradual on/off-sets. Surprisingly, the detailed investigation of temporal characteristics of mechanisms mediating blindsight is only reported in one subject (GY). It is of interest to establish whether these characteristics are similar to those in other cases of blindsight. Here, we report on a systematic study of spatio-temporal properties of mechanisms mediating blindsight in a subject VN. VN has a lower right quadranopia following surgical removal of the left occipital cortex above the

Hemispheric asymmetry in global/local processing: effects of stimulus position and spatial frequency.

We examined the neural mechanisms of functional asymmetry between hemispheres in the processing of global and local information of hierarchical stimuli by measuring hemodynamic responses with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In a selective attention task, subjects responded to targets at the global or local level of compound letters that were (1) broadband in spatial-frequency spectrum and presented at fixation; (2) broadband and presented randomly to the left or the right of fixation; or (3) contrast balanced (CB) to remove low spatial frequencies (SFs) and presented at fixation.

On the processing of spatial frequencies as revealed by evoked-potential source modeling.

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: Visually evoked potentials (VEPs) are known to be sensitive to spatial frequency, especially in the time range between 50 and 100 ms post-stimulus. In two experiments we localized the cortical activity elicited by stimuli of varying spatial frequency in scalp-recorded brain potentials, using multi-electrode recordings and dipole-source analysis. RESULTS: Low spatial frequencies (<1 c/d) activated relatively lateral occipital areas, the orientation of the neural ensembles involved being predominantly perpendicular to the scalp surface. In contrast, high spatial frequenc

Spatial and temporal auditory processing deficits following right hemisphere infarction. A psychophysical study.

Higher auditory function in a patient was investigated following a right hemisphere infarction between the middle and posterior cerebral artery territories involving the insula. The patient complained of lack of musical appreciation and a battery of tests confirmed a dissociated receptive musical deficit in the presence of normal appreciation of environmental sounds and speech. The ability to detect continuous changes in sound frequency in the form of sinusoidal frequency modulation was preserved. There was, however, a deficit in the analysis of rapid temporal sequences of notes which could un

Synthetic Tactile Sensor for Macroscopic Roughness Estimation Based on Spatial-Coding Contact Processing.

Traditional tactile sensors primarily measure macroscopic surface features but do not directly estimate how humans perceive such surface roughness. Sensors that mimic human tactile processing could bridge this gap. This study proposes a method for predicting macroscopic roughness perception based on a sensing principle that closely resembles human tactile information processing. Humans are believed to assess macroscopic roughness based on the spatial distribution of subcutaneous deformation and resultant neural activities when touching a textured surface. To replicate this spatial-coding mecha

Investigating the hemiretinal asymmetry in emotion processing as a function of spatial frequency.

The subcortical visual pathway to the amygdala has long been considered a rapid and crude stream for processing emotionally salient information that is reliant on low spatial frequency (LSF) information. Recently, research has called this LSF dependency into question. To resolve this debate, we take advantage of an anatomical hemiretinal asymmetry, whereby the nasal hemiretina sends a higher proportion of information through the subcortical pathway than the temporal hemiretina. We recorded brain activity using electroencephalography (EEG) in human participants (N = 40) while they completed a m

Spelling errors reveal underlying sequential and spatial processing deficits in adults with dyslexia.

Recent studies showed that some adults with dyslexia have difficulty processing sequentially arranged information. In a companion study, this deficit manifested as low accuracy during a word pair comparison task involving same/different decisions when two words differed in their letter sequences. This sequential deficit was associated with left/right spatial letter confusion. In the present study, we found the same underlying difficulty with sequential and spatial letter processing during word spelling. Participants were the same 22 adults with dyslexia and 20 age- and gender-matched controls

Self-Referential Processing Can Modulate Visual Spatial Attention Deficits in Children With Dyslexia.

Considerable research has shown that children with dyslexia have deficits in visual spatial attention orientation. Additionally, self-referential processing makes self-related information play a unique role in the individual visual spatial attention orientation. However, it is unclear whether such self-referential processing impacts the visual spatial attention orientation of children with dyslexia. Therefore, we manipulated the reference task systematically in the cue-target paradigm and investigated the modulation effect of self-referential processing on visual spatial attention of children

Spatial configuration processing in visual word form perception and reading abilities in Chinese.

The analysis of spatial relations among components of a character is important in identifying visual word forms. We investigated such spatial configuration processing for Chinese characters in dyslexic children (aged 9-12 years) and two groups of typically developing children, matched according to chronological age or reading level. In this study, we used real characters and noncharacters to manipulate the spatial configuration between character components while preserving their local features. Both characters were displayed either in an upright or inverted position. Participants were asked to

The consequence of spatial visual processing dysfunction caused by traumatic brain injury (TBI).

OBJECTIVE: A bi-modal visual processing model is supported by research to affect dysfunction following a traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI causes dysfunction of visual processing affecting binocularity, spatial orientation, posture and balance. Research demonstrates that prescription of prisms influence the plasticity between spatial visual processing and motor-sensory systems improving visual processing and reducing symptoms following a TBI. RATIONALE: The rationale demonstrates that visual processing underlies the functional aspects of binocularity, balance and posture. The bi-modal visual

A neuroanatomical model of space-based and object-centered processing in spatial neglect.

Visual attention can be deployed in space-based or object-centered reference frames. Right-hemisphere damage may lead to distinct deficits of space- or object-based processing, and such dissociations are thought to underlie the heterogeneous nature of spatial neglect. Previous studies have suggested that object-centered processing deficits (such as in copying, reading or line bisection) result from damage to retro-rolandic regions while impaired spatial exploration reflects damage to more anterior regions. However, this evidence is based on small samples and heterogeneous tasks. Here, we teste

Spatial and Temporal High Processing of Visual and Auditory Stimuli in Cervical Dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: Investigation of spatial and temporal cognitive processing in idiopathic cervical dystonia (CD) by means of specific tasks based on perception in time and space domains of visual and auditory stimuli. BACKGROUND: Previous psychophysiological studies have investigated temporal and spatial characteristics of neural processing of sensory stimuli (mainly somatosensorial and visual), whereas the definition of such processing at higher cognitive level has not been sufficiently addressed. The impairment of time and space processing is likely driven by basal ganglia dysfunction. However, o

A neurological dissociation between preserved visual and impaired spatial processing in mental imagery.

Studies on primates have shown that visual and spatial perceptual analysis depends on two separate neural pathways, associated with the processing of "what" and "where" an object is (visual characteristics and spatial coordinates, respectively). Similar dichotomies have been proposed by cognitive psychologists (e.g., the contrast between visual and spatial processing in working memory) and by neuropsychologists (e.g., the distinction between topographic agnosia and amnesia). In this paper we report the case of a patient with a severe spatial disorientation whose perceptual processing of visual

Variational sparse Gaussian-process method for detecting spatially variable genes and cellular interactions in spatial transcriptomics.

Advanced spatially resolved transcriptomic (SRT) technologies preserve the spatial context of gene expression within tissues, enabling the study of context-dependent transcriptional regulation. Here, we propose a variational inference-assisted sparse Gaussian-process (VISGP) framework for identifying spatially variable genes (SVGs) and inferring spatially dependent cellular interactions from SRT data. VISGP combines sparse Gaussian-process approximations with variational inference via inducing variables to reduce computational and memory costs while enabling gene-specific adaptation of spatial

Spatial Variability of Anaerobic Processes and Wastewater pH in Force Mains.

The present study focuses on anaerobic organic matter transformation processes in force mains for the purpose of improving existing sewer process models. Wastewater samples were obtained at 100 m intervals from a 1 km long pilot scale force main and measured for several wastewater parameters. Transformation rates for selected parameters were calculated and their spatial variability analyzed. In terms of electron transfer, fermentation was the most significant process, resulting in a net volatile fatty acid formation of 0.83 mmol/L. Sulfate reduction resulted in a production of 0.73 mmol/L of i
