BACKGROUND: Bangladesh is facing a formidable challenge in mitigating waterborne diseases risk exacerbated by climate change. However, a comprehensive understanding of the spatio-temporal dynamics of these diseases at the district level remains elusive. Therefore, this study aimed to fill this gap by investigating the spatio-temporal pattern and identifying the best tree-based ML models for determining the meteorological factors associated with waterborne diseases in Bangladesh.
METHODS: This study used district-level reported cases of waterborne diseases (cholera, amoebiasis, typhoid and hep

Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease that causes abortions, infertility and mastitis in cattle. This research was aimed at investigating the temporal and spatial pattern, sex, age, breed wise distribution of leptospirosis in Tamil Nadu. A seroreactivity of 28.2% was noticed among cattle in seven agro-climatic zones. The temporal trend of leptospirosis recorded during the post-monsoon season (30.5%) was significant when compared to the pre-monsoon season (25.8%). The spatial distribution revealed a high proportion of leptospirosis (31.2%) in the North East zone in comparison with the o

BACKGROUND: Enteric diseases affect thousands of Canadians annually and several large outbreaks have occurred due to infection with enteric pathogens. The objectives of this study were to describe the spatial and temporal distributions of reportable Campylobacter, Escherichia coli, Giardia, Salmonella and Shigella from 1994 to 2002 in New Brunswick, Canada. By examining the spatial and temporal distributions of disease incidence, hypotheses as to potential disease risk factors were formulated.
METHODS: Time series plots of monthly disease incidence were examined for seasonal and secular trend

The emergence of drug resistance poses a significant challenge to the clinical treatment of HIV/AIDS, making the spread of drug-resistant strains among the infected population a key focus in the monitoring and control of HIV/AIDS. In this paper, we construct a reaction-diffusion model with two HIV strains (drug-sensitive and drug-resistant) to study the spatio-temporal dynamics of HIV/AIDS transmission. With spatial heterogeneity, we derive the basic reproduction number R0 and show that it is a threshold for the outbreak of the disease; that is, when R0<1 the disease will eventually die out, w

Sleeping sickness is a major threat to human health in sub-Saharan Africa. Southeastern Uganda has experienced a number of significant epidemics in the past 100 years, most recently from 1976 to 1989. Recent and continued spread of the disease has highlighted gaps in the ability of current research to explain and predict the distribution of infection. Vegetation cover and changes in vegetation may be important determinants of transmission and disease risk because of the habitat preferences of the tsetse fly vector. This study examines the determinants of sleeping sickness distribution and inci

Spatial analysis and disease mapping have the potential to enhance understanding of tuberculosis (TB) dynamics, whose spatial dynamics may be complicated by the mix of short and long-range transmission and long latency periods. TB notifications in Nam Dinh Province for individuals aged 15 and older from 2013 to 2022 were analyzed with a variety of spatio-temporal methods. The study commenced with an analysis of spatial autocorrelation to identify clustering patterns, followed by the evaluation of several candidate Bayesian spatio-temporal models. These models varied from simple assessments of

Our study examines how dengue fever incidence is associated with spatial (demographic and socioeconomic) alongside temporal (environmental) factors at multiple scales in the city of Ibagué, located in the Andean region of Colombia. We used the dengue incidence in Ibagué from 2013 to 2018 to examine the associations with climate, socioeconomic, and demographic factors from the national census and satellite imagery at four levels of local spatial aggregation. We used geographically weighted regression (GWR) to identify the relevant socioeconomic and demographic predictors, and we then integrated

The objective is to evaluate the performance of computational image classification for indeterminate pulmonary nodules (IPN) chronologically detected by CT scan. Total 483 patients with 670 abnormal pulmonary nodules, who were taken chest thin-section CT (TSCT) images at least twice and resected as suspicious nodules in our hospital, were enrolled in this study. Nodular regions from the initial and the latest TSCT images were cut manually for each case, and approached by Python development environment, using the open-source cv2 library, to measure the nodular change rate (NCR). These NCRs were

Nigeria has made significant progress toward the elimination of onchocerciasis through mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin, with ten states recently declared eligible to stop treatment following WHO-recommended epidemiological and entomological assessments. However, reliable spatial prevalence estimates remain necessary to guide elimination strategies, particularly in areas with limited surveillance. We applied model-based geostatistical analysis using Monte Carlo Maximum Likelihood Estimation to assess the spatio-temporal distribution of onchocerciasis prevalence across Nigeria from

Population-based studies related to pre-eclampsia are scarce. The aim was to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of deaths due to pre-eclampsia in Brazil from 2009 to 2020, characterizing the sociodemographic profile, distribution pattern, and presence of spatio-temporal clusters. It involved an ecological, population-based study using the Brazilian territory as the unit of analysis. The population was made up of all deaths of pregnant and postpartum women reported in Brazil, from 2009 to 2020, with pre-eclampsia as the underlying and/or associated cause. The data were obtained from

Leptospirosis is considered the most globally widespread zoonotic illness; it has been classified as an emerging or reemerging infectious disease by the World Health Organization. Leptospirosis is a disease caused by a pathogenic spirochete of the genus Leptospira. The infection occurs by contacting with the urine of animal reservoirs or contaminated environments. Leptospirosis can be controlled by vaccines used mainly in animals, antibiotics given to exposed humans, and flood-affected people moved to a safe place. Northeastern Argentina accounts for the highest annual number of cases and deat

There has been limited knowledge on spatio-temporal epidemiology of zoonotic arctic fox rabies among countries bordering the Arctic, in particular Greenland. Previous molecular epidemiological studies have suggested the occurrence of one particular arctic rabies virus (RABV) lineage (arctic-3), but have been limited by a low number of available samples preventing in-depth high resolution phylogenetic analysis of RABVs at that time. However, an improved knowledge of the evolution, at a molecular level, of the circulating RABVs and a better understanding of the historical perspective of the dise

BACKGROUND: This study developed a multi-temporal analysis on the relationship between West Nile Virus (WNV) dissemination and environmental variables by using an integrated approach of remote sensing, GIS, and statistical techniques. WNV mosquito cases in seven months (April-October) of the six years (2002-2007) were collected in Indianapolis, USA. Epidemic curves were plotted to identify the temporal outbreaks of WNV. Spatial-temporal analysis and k-mean cluster analysis were further applied to determine the high-risk areas. Finally, the relationship between environmental variables and WNV o

Urban air pollution poses a significant threat to human health and environmental quality, especially in rapidly urbanizing areas. This study aimed to analyze the spatio-temporal variations of air quality in Haridwar City, India, identifying critical pollution hotspots. A systematic air quality monitoring approach was adopted to assess the air quality at the high traffic density zones of Haridwar City. Key pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) and gaseous matter (NO2 and SO2) were monitored for 1 year starting from April 2023 to March 2024. The data was processed to calculate t

The non-native redbay ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), has recently emerged as a significant pest of southeastern U.S. coastal forests. Specifically, a fungal symbiont (Raffaelea sp.) of X. glabratus has caused mortality of redbay (Persea borbonia) and sassafras (Sassafras albidum) trees in the region; several other Lauraceae species also seem susceptible. Although the range of X. glabratus continues to expand rapidly, little is known about the species' biology and behavior. In turn, there has been no broad-scale assessment of the threat it
