Decreases in urine specific gravity and urinary creatinine in dogs with different diseases but with normal renal function.

The subject of this study was to determine urine specific gravity (USg) and urinary creatinine (UCrn) in dogs with different diseases but with normal renal function. Sick dogs with different diseases were divided into nine groups. Dogs suffering from polyuria/polydipsia, vomits, diarrhoea and females in oestrus or pregnant were excluded from the studies. The healthy dogs served as a control group. Over a three-year period, a total of 267 dogs were examined clinically as well as using imaging and laboratory diagnostics methods. In sick dogs, USg and UCrn were found to be essentially decreased (

Plasma concentration of furosemide versus specific gravity of urine in predicting dose of administration in race horses.

This study was undertaken to determine the applicability of plasma concentration of furosemide and specific gravity (SG) of urine in regulating the use of furosemide administered 4 hours prior to race time in Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH) race horses. Nonbleeders (CTL) and certified bleeders (FUR) actively racing in Illinois (IL) and Pennsylvania (PA) were used in the study. Various doses (less than 250, 250, 300, 350, 400 and 500 mg) were administered either as a single intravenous (IV) dose or as a combination (IV-IM) of IV and intramuscular (IM) administrations 4 hours before

The utility of urine specific gravity in combination with urinary qualitative protein testing for detecting abnormal proteinuria.

BACKGROUND: Although qualitative tests are often used for urinary protein evaluation in primary care and health checkups, their results are affected by urine concentration, and the possibility of false-positive or false-negative results can hinder appropriate referral to a nephrologist. We aimed to investigate whether the consideration of urine specific gravity (uSG) improves the diagnostic performance of proteinuria evaluation using qualitative analysis. METHODS: Urine protein levels (mg/gCr), qualitative data, and uSG were extracted over the past 5 years in our nephrology outpatient departm

Urine Specific Gravity as a Practical Marker for Identifying Suboptimal Fluid Intake of Runners ∼12-hr Postexercise.

The legitimacy of urine specific gravity (USG) as a stand-alone measure to detect hydration status has recently been challenged. As an alternative to hydration status, the purpose of this study was to determine the diagnostic capability of using the traditional USG marker of >1.020 to detect insufficient recovery fluid consumption with consideration for moderate versus high sweat losses (2.00-2.99 or >3% body mass, respectively). Adequate recovery fluid intake was operationally defined as ≥100% beverage fluid intake plus food water from one or two meals and a snack. Runners (n = 59) provided 1

Specific gravity increases and brain water content decreases during short epileptiform seizures in discrete rabbit brain areas.

In rabbits subjected to bicuculline (BC)- or pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-seizures of 3 or 20 min duration or to adrenaline-induced hypertension, specific gravity (SG) was measured bilaterally in 15 regional brain areas in order to detect possible associations between the regionally limited blood-brain barrier openings due to these insults (see Nitsch and Klatzo 1983) and the presence of brain edema. In controls, a large variation between regional SG levels became evident: between 1.0467 in cerebellum and 1.0417 in preoptic area. A seizure duration of only 3 min was not sufficient to change SG sig

Values of urine specific gravity for thoroughbred horses treated with furosemide prior to racing compared with untreated horses.

The distribution of specific gravity values for 2,599 urine samples collected from racing Thoroughbred horses that were known to have received furosemide prior to racing was compared with that for 1,669 urine samples from racing Thoroughbred horses that reportedly had not received furosemide. Values of specific gravity for furosemide-treated horses were significantly lower (P < 0.001) than those for horses that had not received furosemide, and the proportion of horses with urine specific gravity either <1.010 or <1.012 was significantly greater (P < 0.001) among the furosemide-treated horses.

Reliability of urinalysis for identification of proteinuria is reduced in the presence of other abnormalities including high specific gravity and hematuria.

PURPOSE: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is classified according to cause, glomerular filtration rate, and proteinuria. Identification of proteinuria with urinalysis (UA) is less accurate than quantification via other methods. We investigated factors leading to discordant UA findings when compared against paired albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) testing. METHODS: Four thousand three hundred and twenty-three UAs were grouped by proteinuria level (A1-A3); concordance with ACR was examined. Classification of UA with confounding factors (UA+CF) or without (UA-CF) was based on CF that resulted in >10

Effects of alfalfa particle size and specific gravity on chewing activity, digestibility, and performance of Holstein dairy cows.

Two experiments were carried out to test the effects of alfalfa particle size and functional specific gravity (FSG) on chewing activity, digestibility, rumen kinetics, and production of lactating dairy cows fed corn silage based rations. In experiment 1, water-holding capacity (WHC), insoluble dry matter, hydration rate, and FSG changes were determined in alfalfa hay (varying in particle size) and corn silage. Reduction of particle size increased bulk density, FSG, and the rate of hydration, and decreased WHC of alfalfa. In experiment 2, 9 midlactation Holstein dairy cows fed total mixed ratio

Detection, quantification, and pharmacokinetics of furosemide and its effects on urinary specific gravity following IV administration to horses.

Furosemide is a potent loop diuretic used for the prevention of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in horses. This drug may interfere with the detection of other substances by reducing urinary concentrations, so its use is strictly regulated. The regulation of furosemide in many racing jurisdictions is based on paired limits of urinary SG (<1.010) and serum furosemide concentrations (>100 ng/ml). To validate this regulatory mechanism, a liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry method employing a solid-phase extraction procedure and furosemide-d5 as an internal standard was

Schistosomiasis and hydration status: Schistosoma haematobium, but not Schistosoma mansoni increases urine specific gravity among rural Tanzanian women.

OBJECTIVES: Schistosome infections can damage organs important for water homeostasis, especially the kidneys. Urogenital schistosomiasis (caused by Schistosoma haematobium) increases protein and blood in urine and intestinal schistosomiasis (caused by S. mansoni) affects total body water. However, no data exist on how different schistosome species affect urine specific gravity (USG), a hydration biomarker. Therefore, we assessed the relationship between S. haematobium- and S. mansoni-infected and uninfected women and USG in rural Tanzania. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Surveys were conducted and sto

Influence of urinary creatinine concentration and specific gravity correction in exposure assessment: Comparison between chronic kidney disease patients and general population.

Urine is a favored matrix for biomonitoring of several important classes of chemicals. Because of variations in concentration, however, urine is often adjusted for dilution. Urinary creatinine (Cr) and specific gravity (SG) have been frequently employed for this purpose. The filtration function of the kidneys may influence the excretion of Cr and urinary SG levels; their influences on urinary exposure biomarker levels are of concern. We hypothesized that dilution adjustment of urine using Cr or SG could influence urinary biomarker levels depending on the kidney function of the subjects. Two gr
