[The role of speech therapists on speech language disordered children].

As psychological and physiological development and circumstances vary considerably, the problems of speech and language in children are further complicated. The speech therapists (ST) who have been concerned with these children and their families are requested eagerly to reconsider and control their own communicative attitude. Furthermore, STs have to improve clinical technique that is appropriate to each child. In this report, the author shows the outline of the speech and language problems of children, and discusses the merit and demerit of speech therapy itself. The clinical approach for mo

The Feel of Speech: Multisystem and Polymodal Somatosensation in Speech Production.

PURPOSE: The oral structures such as the tongue and lips have remarkable somatosensory capacities, but understanding the roles of somatosensation in speech production requires a more comprehensive knowledge of somatosensation in the speech production system in its entirety, including the respiratory, laryngeal, and supralaryngeal subsystems. This review was conducted to summarize the system-wide somatosensory information available for speech production. METHOD: The search was conducted with PubMed/Medline and Google Scholar for articles published until November 2023. Numerous search terms wer

Contrasting speech patterns in apraxia of speech and phonemic paraphasia.

This study was designed to determine if perceptual phonological analysis would reveal distinctions between patients with apraxia of speech and patients with phonemic paraphasic speech. Test findings from 10 Broca's aphasics with apraxia of speech were compared to findings from 10 paraphasic speakers (5 conduction and 5 Wernicke's aphasics). Several marked differences were revealed. Predominant locus of errors and relative difficulty of different classes of phonemic segments were significant discriminators. There was a nonsignificant trend for substituted phonemes to be further from target phon

Speech audiometry by a speech synthesizer. I. A preliminary report.

A preliminary report on speech test results with a portable, text-to-speech synthesizer is presented. The differentiation scores achieved at speed 80 words/min vary. So far the best mean differentiation scores in normal material are 75%. The increase of the presentation level improves the differentiation score, as does the decrease of word speed and training. The future and present uses of this system are discussed. These include: devices for the handicapped, e.g. to produce speech for the mute, man-machine communication through speech in industry control, data processing systems and uses in a

Speech planning happens before speech execution: online reaction time methods in the study of apraxia of speech.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to present an argument for the use of online reaction time (RT) methods to the study of apraxia of speech (AOS) and to review the existing small literature in this area and the contributions it has made to our fundamental understanding of speech planning (deficits) in AOS. METHOD: Following a brief description of limitations of offline perceptual methods, we provide a narrative review of various types of RT paradigms from the (speech) motor programming and psycholinguistic literatures and their (thus far limited) application with AOS. CONCLUSION: On th

A causal test of the motor theory of speech perception: a case of impaired speech production and spared speech perception.

The debate about the causal role of the motor system in speech perception has been reignited by demonstrations that motor processes are engaged during the processing of speech sounds. Here, we evaluate which aspects of auditory speech processing are affected, and which are not, in a stroke patient with dysfunction of the speech motor system. We found that the patient showed a normal phonemic categorical boundary when discriminating two non-words that differ by a minimal pair (e.g., ADA-AGA). However, using the same stimuli, the patient was unable to identify or label the non-word stimuli (usin

Rhythms in Speech.

Speech can be defined as the human ability to communicate through a sequence of vocal sounds. Consequently, speech requires an emitter (the speaker) capable of generating the acoustic signal and a receiver (the listener) able to successfully decode the sounds produced by the emitter (i.e., the acoustic signal). Time plays a central role at both ends of this interaction. On the one hand, speech production requires precise and rapid coordination, typically within the order of milliseconds, of the upper vocal tract articulators (i.e., tongue, jaw, lips, and velum), their composite movements, and

Ambiguity in speech.

Ambiguity in speech during analysis is one manifestation of transference. Four types of ambiguity are illustrated. Each ambiguity communicates an unconscious wish or intention and the defense against this wish or intention. In each type of ambiguity, transference manifestations are expressed in the form of speech and not alone by its content, as we are accustomed to identifying the transference. Each type of ambiguity within the analysis expresses fear to responsibility and recrimination for libidinal or aggressive intentions. In some patients, the combinative ambiguity or malapropism expresse

Preservice speech-language pathologists' learning outcomes with speech-generating devices.

Despite the need to improve preservice training in AAC, there is a limited understanding of what teaching and learning methods are effective in developing preservice speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') competence in AAC. One component of professional preparedness to provide AAC services includes competence with AAC systems. This study aimed to determine if a self-guided hands-on learning opportunity with a speech-generating device (SGD) was effective in developing preservice SLPs' competence with that system. Fifteen undergraduate students majoring in speech-language hearing spent up to 75-m

Speech Envelope Enhancement Instantaneously Effaces Atypical Speech Perception in Dyslexia.

OBJECTIVES: Increasing evidence exists that poor speech perception abilities precede the phonological deficits typically observed in dyslexia, a developmental disorder in learning to read. Impaired processing of dynamic features of speech, such as slow amplitude fluctuations and transient acoustic cues, disrupts effortless tracking of the speech envelope and constrains the development of adequate phonological skills. In this study, a speech envelope enhancement (EE) strategy was implemented to reduce speech perception deficits by students with dyslexia. The EE emphasizes onset cues and reinfor

Transcranial alternating current stimulation with speech envelopes modulates speech comprehension.

Cortical entrainment of the auditory cortex to the broadband temporal envelope of a speech signal is crucial for speech comprehension. Entrainment results in phases of high and low neural excitability, which structure and decode the incoming speech signal. Entrainment to speech is strongest in the theta frequency range (4-8 Hz), the average frequency of the speech envelope. If a speech signal is degraded, entrainment to the speech envelope is weaker and speech intelligibility declines. Besides perceptually evoked cortical entrainment, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) entrain

Speech perception and speech intelligibility in children after cochlear implantation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term speech perception and speech intelligibility of congenitally and prelingually deaf children after cochlear implantation. It was a longitudinal study following 63 congenitally or prelingually deaf children up to 5 years after implantation. They each received a nucleus multichannel cochlear implant before they were 10 years old. METHODS: Perception is evaluated using the Test for the Evaluation of Voice Perception and Production (TEPP) and concerns closed- and open-set word and sentence perception without lip-reading. The intelligibility is

Characterizing Speech Errors Across Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech Subtypes.

PURPOSE: Apraxia of speech (AOS) is a motor speech disorder affecting articulatory planning and speech programming. When AOS is the sole manifestation of neurodegeneration, it is termed primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS). Recent work has shown that there are distinct PPAOS subtypes: phonetic, prosodic, and those that do not clearly align with either (mixed). PPAOS subtypes differ with respect to the predominating motor speech difficulties, as well as disease progression and underlying pathology. Because past studies have determined PPAOS subtype based on clinical impression, the goa

Orthognathic speech pathology: impacts of Class III malocclusion on speech.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with dentofacial disharmonies (DFDs) seek orthodontic care and orthognathic surgery to address issues with mastication, esthetics, and speech. Speech distortions are seen 18 times more frequently in Class III DFD patients than the general population, with unclear causality. We hypothesize there are significant differences in spectral properties of stop (/t/ or /k/), fricative (/s/ or /ʃ/), and affricate (/tʃ/) consonants and that severity of Class III disharmony correlates with the degree of speech abnormality. METHODS: To understand how jaw disharmonies influence speec
