Remote Identification of APOE-ε4 Carrier Status in Cognitively Normal Adults via Speech Acoustics: Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE-ε4), the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer disease (AD), is associated with early neuromotor vulnerability that may precede measurable cognitive decline. Because speech integrates fine neuromotor processes, acoustic analysis could offer a sensitive, noninvasive marker of preclinical effects. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine if speech acoustics distinguish cognitively normal APOE-ε4 carriers from noncarriers, and to assess which speech tasks provide optimal classification performance. METHODS: In this cross-sectional observatio

Neural speech tracking in a virtual acoustic environment: audio-visual benefit for unscripted continuous speech.

The audio-visual benefit in speech perception-where congruent visual input enhances auditory processing-is well-documented across age groups, particularly in challenging listening conditions and among individuals with varying hearing abilities. However, most studies rely on highly controlled laboratory environments with scripted stimuli. Here, we examine the audio-visual benefit using unscripted, natural speech from untrained speakers within a virtual acoustic environment. Using electroencephalography (EEG) and cortical speech tracking, we assessed neural responses across audio-visual, audio-o

Contribution of acoustic analysis to the detection of vocoid epenthesis in apraxia of speech and other motor speech disorders.

BACKGROUND: Vocoid epenthesis within consonant clusters has been claimed to contribute to the diagnosis of apraxia of speech. In clinical practice, the clinicians often doubt about the correct production of clusters as the C-C transition may be minimally disrupted. AIMS: To demonstrate the value of acoustic analysis in clinical practice as a reliable complement to perceptive judgment. METHODS & PROCEDURES: We compared the acoustic signature and the perceptive detection of vocoid epentheses in unvoiced consonant clusters within pseudo-words produced by 40 participants presenting different sub

The effect of speech therapy on acoustic speech characteristics of cleft lip and palate patients: a preliminary study.

PURPOSE: To assess the effects of speech therapy on the acoustic characteristics of speech in a group of cleft lip and palate patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental pilot study, eight patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate participated in the 13-month period of speech therapy. They had some exercises in the class and at home to reduce the hypernasality of speech. Using an acoustic software named Praat, three formants (F1, F2, F3) of speech sounds /b /, /p /, /f /, /v /, /k /, and /g / were obtained pre and post speech therapy. We used paired samples t-test to compare the

Speech Markers of Parkinson's Disease: Phonological Features and Acoustic Measures.

Background/Objectives: Parkinson's disease (PD) affects both articulatory and phonatory subsystems, leading to characteristic speech changes known as hypokinetic dysarthria. However, few studies have jointly analyzed these subsystems within the same participants using interpretable deep-learning-based measures. Methods: Speech data from the PC-GITA corpus, including 50 Colombian Spanish speakers with PD and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were analyzed. We combined phonological feature posteriors-probabilistic indices of articulatory constriction derived from the Phonet deep neural ne

Acoustic prominence: Understanding speech patterns in children with Down syndrome.

Prominence in speech refers to the emphasis placed on certain words or syllables in English, making their salience through increased duration, increased intensity, and sometimes f0 dynamics. By marking acoustic prominence, speakers distinguish new from given information in speech. While a large body of relevant literature exists on how acoustic prominence is acoustically realized in typically developing (TD) children, little is known about how children with Down syndrome (DS) mark it. In this study, a "Puppet Show" task was conducted with 22 TD children and ten children with DS, one of whom wa

Acoustic Exaggeration Enhances Speech Discrimination in Young Autistic Children.

Child-directed speech (CDS), which amplifies acoustic and social features of speech during interactions with young children, promotes typical phonetic and language development. In autism, both behavioral and brain data indicate reduced sensitivity to human speech, which predicts absent, decreased, or atypical benefits of exaggerated speech signals such as CDS. This study investigates the impact of exaggerated fundamental frequency (F0) and voice-onset time on the neural processing of speech sounds in 22 Chinese-speaking autistic children aged 2-7 years old with a history of speech delays, comp

Acoustic Analysis of Spatiotemporal Variability in Children With Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate acoustic spatiotemporal variability in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) compared to children with typical development (TD). Increased spatiotemporal variability in children with CAS relative to nonapraxic peers has been documented in multiple kinematic studies. To date, few studies have investigated spatiotemporal variability in CAS using an acoustic signal. METHOD: Data were drawn from 10 children with CAS and 10 children with TD, ranging in age from 5;0 to 11;2 (years;months), who participated in an online study. All child

Application of a Landmark-Based Method for Acoustic Analysis of Dysphonic Speech.

AIM: Speakers with dysphonia often report difficulty with maintaining intelligibility in noisy environments; however, there is no objective method for characterizing this difficulty. Landmark-based analysis is a linguistically-motived, knowledge-based speech analysis technique, which may serve as the basis of acoustic tool for describing the intelligibility deficit. As the first step toward development of such a tool, this study examined whether Landmark-based analysis could describe acoustic differences between normal and dysphonic speech. METHOD: The recordings subjected to the Landmark-bas

Recovery of speech following total glossectomy: an acoustic and perceptual appraisal.

This study involved an acoustic and perceptual analysis of the speech produced by a 31-year-old female following total glossectomy. Speech samples were collected on three occasions within the first 3 months following glossectomy. Vowel articulation was examined acoustically as a function of vowel space and the Euclidean distance separating corner vowels. Perceptual analyses involved presentation of the participant's CV productions to 30 healthy adult listeners who made forced-choice identifications of consonant type. Acoustic analysis revealed improvements in vowel space area and an increase i

Acoustic and intelligibility characteristics of sentence production in neurogenic speech disorders.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between scaled speech intelligibility and selected acoustic variables in persons with dysarthria. Control speakers and speakers with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson's disease (PD) produced sentences which were analyzed acoustically and perceptually. The acoustic variables included total utterance durations, segment durations, estimates of the acoustic vowel space, and slopes of formant transitions; the perceptual variables included scaled speech intelligibility and severity of speech involvement. Results indicated that

From acoustic to linguistic analysis of temporal speech structure: Acousto-linguistic transformation during speech perception using speech quilts.

Speech perception entails the mapping of the acoustic waveform to linguistic representations. For this transformation to succeed, the speech signal needs to be tracked over various temporal windows at high temporal precision in order to decode linguistic units ranging from phonemes (tens of milliseconds) to sentences (seconds). Here, we tested the hypothesis that cortical processing of speech-specific temporal structure is modulated by higher-level linguistic analysis. Using fMRI, we measured BOLD signal changes to 4 s long speech quilts with variable temporal structure (30, 120, 480, 960 ms s

An Electroglottographic and Acoustic Study on Mandarin Speech in Male Heroin Users.

Drug abuse can cause severe damage to the human speech organs. The vocal folds are one of the important speech organs that produce voice through vibration when airflow passes through. Previous studies have reported the negative effects of drugs on speech organs, including the vocal folds, but there is still limited research on relevant field. Therefore, the current study recruited 25 heroin users and 30 healthy controls with no history of drug use. Electroglottography and speech signals of 26 target sentences were collected from all participants. The results of the current study showed that th

An acoustic study of Cantonese alaryngeal speech in different speaking conditions.

Esophageal (ES) speech, tracheoesophageal (TE) speech, and the electrolarynx (EL) are common methods of communication following the removal of the larynx. Our recent study demonstrated that intelligibility may increase for Cantonese alaryngeal speakers using clear speech (CS) compared to their everyday "habitual speech" (HS), but the reasoning is still unclear [Hui, Cox, Huang, Chen, and Ng (2022). Folia Phoniatr. Logop. 74, 103-111]. The purpose of this study was to assess the acoustic characteristics of vowels and tones produced by Cantonese alaryngeal speakers using HS and CS. Thirty-one al

Perceptual and Acoustic Analysis of Speech in Spinocerebellar ataxia Type 1.

This study characterizes the speech phenotype of spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) using both perceptual and objective acoustic analysis of speech in a cohort of SCA1 patients. Twenty-seven symptomatic SCA1 patients in various disease stages (SARA score range: 3-32 points) and 18 sex and age matched healthy controls underwent a clinical assessment addressing ataxia severity, non-ataxia signs, cognitive functioning, and speech. Speech samples were perceptually rated by trained speech therapists, and acoustic metrics representing speech timing, vocal control, and voice quality were extracted.

Voice Acoustic Instability During Spontaneous Speech in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: In people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD), both motor and cognitive deficits influence voice and other aspects of communication. PwPD demonstrate vocal instability, but acoustic declines over the course of speaking are not well characterized and the role of cognition on these declines is unknown. We examined voice acoustics related to speech motor instability by comparing the first and the last utterances within a speech task. Our objective was to determine if mild cognitive impairment (MCI) status was associated with different patterns of acoustic change during these tasks. METHO

Unilateral Acoustic Degradation Delays Attentional Separation of Competing Speech.

Hearing loss is often asymmetric such that hearing thresholds differ substantially between the two ears. The extreme case of such asymmetric hearing is single-sided deafness. A unilateral cochlear implant (CI) on the more severely impaired ear is an effective treatment to restore hearing. The interactive effects of unilateral acoustic degradation and spatial attention to one sound source in multitalker situations are at present unclear. Here, we simulated some features of listening with a unilateral CI in young, normal-hearing listeners (N = 22) who were presented with 8-band noise-vocoded spe
