BACKGROUND: Hearing loss causes a significant reduction in the quality of life of patients with Ménière's disease. Although speech recognition is also affected, it has not been extensively studied. The objective of the study was to describe speech recognition behavior during a prolonged period in patients with unilateral Ménière's disease.
METHODS: A prospective case-control study was performed. The case group included patients with defined unilateral Ménière's disease and the control group included patients with progressive non-fluctuating hearing loss. Patients underwent an auditory evaluat

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In speech audiometry, sentence tests have the advantage of assessing more words within a given period of time than single-word tests do. Consequently, greater accuracy (steeper discrimination function) is achieved. The recently developed German Oldenburg Sentence Test for Children (OlKiSa) has been evaluated thus far for school-aged children in noise, and normative data for younger children in a quiet environment have been established. In this study, the focus is on its applicability in hearing-impaired children fitted with hearing aids or cochlear implants.
METHODS: The use

The human singing voice plays an important role in music of all societies. It is an extremely flexible instrument and is capable of producing a tremendous range of sounds. As such, the human voice can be hard to classify and poses a major challenge for automatic audio discrimination and classification systems. Speech/song discrimination is an implicit goal of speech/music discrimination, where a division is sought between speech and song, such that the singing voice can be grouped together with other musical instruments in the same category. However, the division between speech and song is unc

BACKGROUND: Pitch perception and pitch matching may link to individual reading skills.
OBJECTIVE: In this study, we examined pitch perception and pitch matching tasks in children with learning disabilities to determine whether there was any connection between these tests and the reading fluency in these children.
METHOD: The study used different types of pitch discrimination tests and reading fluency tests to compare the two groups.
RESULTS: Results indicated that the accuracy of pitch discrimination and reading fluency was significantly different in these children with learning disabilitie

Although results obtained with the Tadoma method of speechreading have set a new standard for tactual speech communication, they are nevertheless inferior to those obtained in the normal auditory domain. Speech reception through Tadoma is comparable to that of normal-hearing subjects listening to speech under adverse conditions corresponding to a speech-to-noise ratio of roughly 0 dB. The goal of the current study was to demonstrate improvements to speech reception through Tadoma through the use of supplementary tactual information, thus leading to a new standard of performance in the tactual

BACKGROUND: Patients with cleft palate often suffer from recurrent otitis media chronica with effusion during infancy. The consecutive binaural conductive hearing loss is seen as a risk factor for developing auditory processing disease. Since there are just a few studies examining auditory processing in this population this study aimed to investigate on an own patient cohort with different cleft manifestations in terms of auditory processing disorders in context to given studies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included 48 patients (5-16 years): all patients had a non-syndromic cleft palate

An audiogram is a hearing test conducted under ideal listening conditions in a soundproof booth. The test includes different pitches and intensities and the results are conveyed in graphical form. If there is hearing loss an audiogram helps distinguish conductive loss (outer/middle ear) from sensorineural loss (cochlea/cochlear nerve).

Hearing impaired children do not develop oral speech in the same time with the hearing ones. Cochlear implants may change this situation. Implanted deaf children may develop oral speech but only after long speech rehabilitation. Acquisition of language skills should be assesed correctly in every patient. It is important because this therapy is quite expensive. There are many quantitative and qualitative methods used all over the world. In some cases score is calculated as percentage of correctly repeated words. Sometimes it did not reflect true level of language development. 240 people were im

The nature of the fundamental deficit underlying reading disability is the subject of a long-standing debate. We previously found that dyslexics with additional learning difficulties (D-LDs) perform poorly in simple auditory tasks. We now tried to determine whether these deficits relate to stimulus or task complexity. We found that the degree of impairment was dependent on task rather than stimulus complexity. D-LDs could adequately detect and identify mild frequency changes in simple pure tones and minimal phonemic changes in complex speech sounds when task required only simple same-different

Many of the decisions regarding hearing aid selection and use are based mainly upon clinical impressions. It was therefore decided to investigate whether the old fitting of 25 aided subjects with moderate hearing loss could be improved by using more precise prescription rules and a real ear measuring technique. The rules formulated should give a frequency response of moderate low and pronounced high frequency gain. The application of these rules resulted in improved high frequency gain and better speech discrimination for consonants in noise. As a result of the investigation, the routine proce

Accurate and objective assessment of higher order auditory processing is challenging and mainly relies on evaluations that require a subjects' active participation in tests such as frequency discrimination or speech perception in noise. This study investigates the value of cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) evoked in response to auditory change stimuli, known as acoustic change complexes (ACCs), as an objective measurement of auditory performance in hearing impairment. Secondary objectives were to assess the effect of hearing loss and non-professional musical experience on the ACC, an

A careful hearing aid fitting requires consideration of various characteristics of inner ear pathology. The recruitment phenomenon restricts the dynamic range of the impaired hearing and this increase the demands on the hearing aids for a satisfactory correction of the frequency characteristics as well as for an intensity reduction at higher sound pressure level SPL. For years data from coupler or KEMAR (Knowles Electronics Manikin of Acoustical Research) have served to estimate the real ear gain of a hearing aid at higher input levels. In previous papers we reported on some of the differences

INTRODUCTION: Constant histological changes in otosclerosis lead to progressive hearing loss which may end up in a profound hearing loss and then be treated by means of cochlear implants. These progressive changes could be followed by changes in cochlear implants fitting and speech discrimination results over the years.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study is to correlate the progressive histological changes to the cochlear implant clinical outcomes (fitting and speech discrimination results). Also main complications (facial nerve stimulation and difficulties at insertion) and new complications w

The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of musical background on both pitch discrimination abilities and the reliability of judging voice quality in dysphonic speakers, and to determine the relationship between pitch discrimination abilities and the reliability of voice quality judgments. Twenty musicians and 20 nonmusicians performed pitch discrimination tests. They also made judgments of dysphonic vowels and speech samples for breathiness and roughness using 100-mm visual analog scales. Musicians demonstrated significantly smaller pitch discrimination thresholds than nonmus

The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of four patients with word deafness or auditory agnosia to discriminate speech by reading lips. The patients were studied using nonsense monosyllables to test for speech discrimination, a lip reading test, the Token Test for auditory comprehension, and the Aphasia test. Our results show that patients with word deafness or auditory agnosia without aphasia can improve speech comprehension by reading lips in combination with listening, as compared with lip reading or listening alone. In conclusion, lip reading was shown to be useful for speech c

An analysis was carried out of the pattern of errors in those words which were incorrectly perceived by patients during the course of routine speech audiometric tests using consonant-vowel-consonant words. Responses were examined from 20 patients with conductive hearing loss, and 20 with cochlear hearing loss due to Ménière's disease. Word errors result from misinterpretations of a single consonant in 70% of the conductive group and 56% of the Ménière group. The latter make slightly more errors involving both consonants. Errors in vowels alone are rare in both groups and, even in combination,

OBJECTIVES: Hearing loss is a commonly experienced disability in a variety of populations including veterans and the elderly and can often cause significant impairment in the ability to understand spoken language. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that neural and behavioral responses to speech will be differentially impaired in an animal model after two forms of hearing loss.
DESIGN: Sixteen female Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to one of two types of broadband noise which was either moderate or intense. In nine of these rats, auditory cortex recordings were taken 4 weeks after noise

OBJECTIVE: The frequency modulation (FM) of speech can convey linguistic information and also enhance speech-stream coherence and segmentation. The purpose of the present study was to use a clinically oriented approach to examine the effects of age and hearing loss on the ability to discriminate between stochastic patterns of low-rate FM and determine whether difficulties in speech perception experienced by older listeners relate to a deficit in this ability.
DESIGN: Data were collected from 18 normal-hearing young adults, and 18 participants who were at least 60 years old, nine of whom had n

An essential precondition for normal speech development is an intact peripheral and central hearing capacity. Disturbances of auditory perception can be the cause of speech defects. There are many methods to examine sound discriminating capacity. Most of them are statistically not verified or standardized. We developed a testing method which consists of 44 figured word pairs. We suggest how to differentiate between children with impaired auditory perception from children without this disturbance. Visual perception and visuomotor function were examined by the Marianne Frostig Developmental Test
