Evaluation of Ambient Voice Technology in the National Health Service in England: Protocol for a Phase 2 Study.

BACKGROUND: Ambient voice technology (AVT) uses conversational AI to record and organize clinical consultations in real time. It is being adopted quickly across the National Health Service (NHS). However, evidence about its effects on productivity, costs, or staff experience across different health care settings is limited. Phase 1 of this research program developed a taxonomy, logic model, and outcome framework for evaluating AVT. Phase 2 will carry out a multisite, mixed methods evaluation of AVT in 4 NHS trusts. These include mental health outpatient services, acute hospital outpatient clin

Automatic Speech Recognition and Acoustic Analysis for Dysarthria Assessment in Telerehabilitation: User-Centered Design and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Dysarthria is a frequent motor speech disorder following a stroke, affecting up to 42% of survivors and resulting in reduced speech intelligibility and diminished quality of life. Clinical assessments, such as the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment, Second Edition (FDA-2), rely heavily on the subjective judgment of speech-language pathologists (SLPs), which limits comparability and scalability. Telepractice solutions have the potential to extend access to care, but validated digital tools that combine automatic analysis with clinically usable interfaces remain scarce. OBJECTIVE: This

Joint Dictionary Learning-Based Non-Negative Matrix Factorization for Voice Conversion to Improve Speech Intelligibility After Oral Surgery.

Objective: This paper focuses on machine learning based voice conversion (VC) techniques for improving the speech intelligibility of surgical patients who have had parts of their articulators removed. Because of the removal of parts of the articulator, a patient's speech may be distorted and difficult to understand. To overcome this problem, VC methods can be applied to convert the distorted speech such that it is clear and more intelligible. To design an effective VC method, two key points must be considered: 1) the amount of training data may be limited (because speaking for a long time is u

Automated Speech Recognition in Adult Stroke Survivors: Comparing Human and Computer Transcriptions.

OBJECTIVE: Speech sound errors are common in people with a variety of communication disorders and can result in impaired message transmission to listeners. Valid and reliable metrics exist to quantify this problem, but they are rarely used in clinical settings due to the time-intensive nature of speech transcription by humans. Automated speech recognition (ASR) technologies have advanced substantially in recent years, enabling them to serve as realistic proxies for human listeners. This study aimed to determine how closely transcription scores from human listeners correspond to scores from an

Application of automatic speech recognition to quantitative assessment of tracheoesophageal speech with different signal quality.

OBJECTIVE: Tracheoesophageal voice is state-of-the-art in voice rehabilitation after laryngectomy. Intelligibility on a telephone is an important evaluation criterion as it is a crucial part of social life. An objective measure of intelligibility when talking on a telephone is desirable in the field of postlaryngectomy speech therapy and its evaluation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Based upon successful earlier studies with broadband speech, an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system was applied to 41 recordings of postlaryngectomy patients. Recordings were available in different signal qualities;

Automatic speech recognition using articulatory features from subject-independent acoustic-to-articulatory inversion.

An automatic speech recognition approach is presented which uses articulatory features estimated by a subject-independent acoustic-to-articulatory inversion. The inversion allows estimation of articulatory features from any talker's speech acoustics using only an exemplary subject's articulatory-to-acoustic map. Results are reported on a broad class phonetic classification experiment on speech from English talkers using data from three distinct English talkers as exemplars for inversion. Results indicate that the inclusion of the articulatory information improves classification accuracy but th

A computer model of auditory efferent suppression: implications for the recognition of speech in noise.

The neural mechanisms underlying the ability of human listeners to recognize speech in the presence of background noise are still imperfectly understood. However, there is mounting evidence that the medial olivocochlear system plays an important role, via efferents that exert a suppressive effect on the response of the basilar membrane. The current paper presents a computer modeling study that investigates the possible role of this activity on speech intelligibility in noise. A model of auditory efferent processing [Ferry, R. Prompt Tuning of Deep Neural Networks for Speaker-Adaptive Visual Speech Recognition.

Visual Speech Recognition (VSR) aims to infer speech into text depending on lip movements alone. As it focuses on visual information to model the speech, its performance is inherently sensitive to personal lip appearances and movements, and this makes the VSR models show degraded performance when they are applied to unseen speakers. In this paper, to remedy the performance degradation of the VSR model on unseen speakers, we propose prompt tuning methods of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) for speaker-adaptive VSR. Specifically, motivated by recent advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP), we f

Automatic Speech Recognition in Primary Progressive Apraxia of Speech.

INTRODUCTION: Transcribing disordered speech can be useful when diagnosing motor speech disorders such as primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS), who have sound additions, deletions, and substitutions, or distortions and/or slow, segmented speech. Since transcribing speech can be a laborious process and requires an experienced listener, using automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems for diagnosis and treatment monitoring is appealing. This study evaluated the efficacy of a readily available ASR system (wav2vec 2.0) in transcribing speech of PPAOS patients to determine if the word erro

Automatic development of speech-in-noise hearing tests using machine learning.

Understanding speech in noisy environments is a primary challenge for individuals with hearing loss, affecting daily communication and quality of life. Traditional speech-in-noise tests are essential for screening and diagnosing hearing loss but are resource-intensive to develop, making them less accessible in low and middle-income countries. This study introduces an artificial intelligence-based approach to automate the development of these tests. By leveraging text-to-speech and automatic speech recognition (ASR) technologies, the cost, time, and resources required for high-quality speech-in

Automatized analysis of children's exposure to child-directed speech in reschool settings: Validation and application.

The present study explored whether a tool for automatic detection and recognition of interactions and child-directed speech (CDS) in preschool classrooms could be developed, validated, and applied to non-coded video recordings representing children's classroom experiences. Using first-person video recordings collected by 13 preschool children during a morning in their classrooms, we extracted high-level audiovisual features from recordings using automatic speech recognition and computer vision services from a cloud computing provider. Using manual coding for interactions and transcriptions of

A Controlled Single-Speaker Evaluation of Ambient Voice Technologies' Speech-to-Text Function Using Narrated Surgical Case-Reports.

Ambient voice technologies (AVT) utilise automatic speech recognition (ASR) and generative artificial intelligence for speech-to-text conversion, and are advocated as efficient, accurate tools for clinical documentation. We investigated (n = 8) AVT systems using surgical case-reports as narratives in a controlled single-speaker evaluation prioritising safety outcomes: specifically 3 commercial transcription-systems (Dragon-Medical-One, Heidi-Health, Tortus); 4 ASR speech-to-text Application Programming Interfaces (Speechmatics-Enhanced, Amazon-Medical-Transcribe, Whisper, GPT4oTranscribe); and

Speech translation for multilingual medical education leveraged by large language models.

The application of large language models (LLMs) to speech translation (ST) or, in general, to machine translation (MT) has recently provided excellent results, superseding conventional encoder-decoder MT systems in the general domain. However, this is not clearly the case when LLMs as MT systems are translating medical-related materials. In this respect, the provision of multilingual training materials for oncology professionals is a goal of the EU project Interact-Europe in which this work was framed. To this end, cross-language technology adapted to the oncology domain was developed, evaluat

AI-Driven Web-Based Speech Transcription Tool: A Novel Approach for Efficient Evaluation of Verbal Memory Performance.

Memory deficits are prevalent in epilepsy and other brain disorders, significantly affecting quality of life. In particular, patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy require ongoing monitoring and repeated memory assessments to track cognitive function, which could benefit from automated transcription tools. We used a classic free recall (FR) verbal memory task, where participants recalled words, to assess their performance by recording, transcribing, and detecting vocalizations of correctly remembered words. Conventional manual speech transcription methods are time-consuming and prone to h
