Increased Improvement in Speech-Language Skills After Transcranial Photobiomodulation Plus Speech-Language Therapy, Compared to Speech-Language Therapy Alone: Case Report with Aphasia.

Objective: This is a case report showing that transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) combined with traditional, speech-language therapy improved and accelerated the results from speech-language therapy, in a stroke person with aphasia (PWA). Background: tPBM is a safe, noninvasive technique using red and near-infrared light to improve the metabolism of cells. tPBM helps by promoting neuromodulation, while decreasing neuroinflammation and promoting vasodilation. Several studies have shown that tPBM can help individuals with stroke or traumatic brain injury achieve significant cognitive improvem

Red flags for speech impairment: who should we refer to speech therapy?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Speech disorders are a common presenting concern to paediatricians. Yet evidence to guide detection and speech sound therapy referral of cases at risk for persistent speech disorder is limited, with no normative English speech data published for over two decades. Here we describe speech development in a large, contemporaneous normative sample, to help clinicians identify errors of disordered speech from developmental errors (which are of lesser concern). We also examine differences in speech development over 20 years. METHODS: Children aged 2 years 0 months-12 years

Speech Therapy Interventions for Acquired Apraxia of Speech: An Updated Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: This systematic review aims to summarize and evaluate the available literature on speech and language therapy interventions for acquired apraxia of speech since 2012. METHOD: A systematic search in six electronic databases was performed from 2013 to 2020. The following primary outcomes were summarized: (a) improvement in targeted behaviors, (b) generalization, and (c) maintenance of outcomes. Moreover, studies were evaluated for the level of evidence and the clinical phase. RESULTS: Of the 3,070 records identified, 27 studies were included in this review. The majority of the studies

Acoustic analysis of parkinsonian speech I: speech characteristics and L-Dopa therapy.

This paper reviews the literature pertaining to Parkinson's disease (PD) and the speech dysfunction typically associated with PD, including the effects on respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance, and prosody. The effect of treatment with the drug L-Dopa is also examined, along with the effect of L-Dopa treatment on Parkinsonian speech. This paper is the first of a two-part series. Part two examines the literature pertaining to the fluctuations that can occur during treatment with L-Dopa, the speech changes associated with these fluctuations, and methodological issues affecting the exam

[Speech therapy intervention in comprehension disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Most of the studies conducted on the subject of language pathologies have focused on the expressive aspect, but there is now generalised agreement on considering that most language disorders stem essentially from problems in the processes allowing input of verbal information provided by the environment. DEVELOPMENT: We analyse the processes that take place in a child's mind when faced with verbal production and the communicative intentions of others, in an attempt to understand the nature of their difficulties. CONCLUSIONS: The comprehension of oral language brings into play a

Technology assisted speech and language therapy.

Speech and language therapists (SLTs) are faced daily with a diversity of speech and language disabilities, which are associated with a variety of conditions ranging from client groups with overall cognitive deficits to those with more specific difficulties. It is desirable that those working with such a range of problems and with such a demanding workload, plan care efficiently. Therefore, the introduction of methodologies, reference models of work and tools, which significantly improve the effectiveness of therapy, are particularly welcome. This paper describes the first web-based tool for d

Speech therapy with cochlear implant wearers.

The speech production of three post-lingually deafened adults, who derived no benefit from wearing hearing aids, was assessed. Individual therapy programmes were devised based on these assessments and the subjects participated in a course of speech therapy. They then received cochlear implants and had a further course of speech therapy using their implants. Changes in speech production were judged by trained listeners, who heard tape-recorded samples of the subjects' speech. These samples were taken at various intervals before and after therapy alone, and with the cochlear implant. Significant

Comparison of Speech Outcomes Between Speech Therapy Only and Double-Opposing Z-Plasty Combined With Speech Therapy in Patients With Submucous Cleft Palate.

The purpose of this study was to compare speech outcomes in patients with submucous cleft palate (SMCP) between speech therapy alone and double-opposing Z-plasty (DOZ) combined with speech therapy. The subjects were 67 patients with SMCP (overt type, 45 males, 22 females), who were divided into the observation group (n=18), the speech therapy group (n=24; duration, 17.8 mo), and the DOZ and speech therapy (DOZ-speech therapy) group (n=25; median age at DOZ, 5.3 years, duration, 18.6 mo). The median age at initial and final speech assessments were 3 and 5 years. After age, sex, syndromic status

The response of the apparent receptive speech disorder of Parkinson's disease to speech therapy.

Eleven patients with Parkinson's disease were tested for prosodic abnormality, on three tests of speech production (of angry, questioning, and neutral statement forms), and four tests of appreciation of the prosodic features of speech and facial expression. The tests were repeated after a control period of two weeks without speech therapy and were not substantially different. After two weeks of intensive domiciliary prosodic therapy, the prosodic abnormality score was improved, as were three of the four tests of recognition of the prosodic features of speech and facial expression, and two of t

Comparison of speech and language therapy techniques for speech problems in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease commonly suffer from speech and voice difficulties such as impaired articulation and reduced loudness. Speech and language therapy (SLT) aims to improve the intelligibility of speech with behavioural treatment techniques or instrumental aids. OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacy and effectiveness of novel SLT techniques versus a standard SLT approach to treat Parkinsonian speech problems. SEARCH METHODS: We identified relevant, published prior to 11(th) April 2011, by electronic searches of numerous literature databases including CENTRAL, MEDLINE

[Speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders from the psycholinguistic paradigm of speech processing].

The aim of this study is to present a survey of speech therapy intervention in phonological disorders (PD). We will examine the concepts of normal phonological development and those involved in PD in order to understand how they have been dealt with, historically, in speech therapy intervention. Lastly, we will describe how evaluation and intervention are carried out from the speech processing paradigm. Phonetic phonological skills allow people to decode the phonic strings they hear so as to be able to gain access to their phonological form and meaning. These abilities also enable them to enco

Speech therapy program for the rehabilitation of smell.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a speech-language pathology-based therapeutic intervention for olfactory dysfunctions. METHODS: The speech-language olfactory rehabilitation program was applied to eight patients with complaints of reduced olfaction due to persistent post-viral infection (1 to 2 years post-infection) and confirmed hyposmia, as determined by the Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center test. The intervention consisted of 13 in-person sessions of 45 minutes each (the first and last for assessment), which included strategies aimed at increasing awareness of olfa
