The Caenorhabditis elegans microbiome impacts microsporidia infection through nutrient limitation and spore inactivation.

Microsporidia are fungal parasites that can only reproduce inside the cells of a host, and they infect most animal groups, including humans and agriculturally important species. Animals also harbor a microbiome, which can shape resistance to infection, but the mechanisms by which bacteria influence microsporidia infection are poorly understood. To address this, we tested how bacteria associated with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans affect infection by its natural microsporidian parasite, Nematocida parisii. Here we show that nematodes grown on Chryseobacterium scophthalmum or Sphingobacteri

Flavonoid-associated microbial defense and Cellvibrio sp. C74 pretreatment collectively enhance straw degradation by Stropharia rugosoannulata.

Stropharia rugosoannulata efficiently utilizes straw in natural habitats, yet how it simultaneously defends against competing environmental microorganisms and degrades lignocellulose remains unclear. Here, transcriptomic, metabolomic, and microbiome analyses were integrated with flavonoid antibacterial assays and bacterial pretreatment experiments to characterize fungus-bacterium interactions during straw degradation. The flavonoid biosynthesis-related genes chi, fns, and fls were significantly upregulated during degradation, and the total flavonoid content reached 101.06 μg/g dry weight at th

Enhanced tetracycline removal in sequencing batch reactors by bioaugmentation using tetX-carrying strains: Efficiency and mechanisms.

Tetracyclines antibiotics (TCs) pose notable environmental challenges due to their persistence in the effluent of wastewater treatment systems. Bioaugmentation offers a promising strategy for their removal, yet information is still very limited. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of bioaugmentation using wild-type (Sphingobacterium sp. WM1) and engineered tetX-carrying (PUC-tetX) strains for enhancing tetracycline (TC) removal in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). Bioaugmentation mitigated TC's inhibitory effects on denitrification and phosphorus removal processes within SBR systems. Speci

Surfactant-enhanced bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil and microbial community response: A field study.

Surfactant-enhanced bioremediation (SEBR) is frequently employed to clean up soil polluted with petroleum hydrocarbons, but few studies have focused on how surfactants affect microbial communities and different fractions of petroleum hydrocarbons, particularly in the field. Here, the surfactants sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS), Triton X-100 (TX-100), Tween80, and rhamnolipid were combined with the oil-degrading bacterium Pseudomonas sp. SB to remediate oil-contaminated soil in the laboratory. AOS gave the highest removal efficiency (65.1%) of total petrole

Rhizosphere microbiome assembly and functional enrichment drive salt tolerance in wheat.

Soil salinization is a major constraint on wheat production, as seedling-stage stress strongly constrains early growth and potential yield. However, the mechanisms by which the rhizosphere microbiome mediates varietal differences in salt tolerance remain poorly understood. Here, we compared a salt-tolerant wheat cultivar (Jimai60, JM60) and a salt-sensitive cultivar (Guomai301, GM301) grown in saline-alkali soil. Integrating soil physicochemical, enzymatic analyses and 16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagenomic sequencing, we investigated rhizosphere microbiome assembly, network structure, and func

The lower respiratory tract microbiome of critically ill patients with COVID-19.

COVID-19 infection may predispose to secondary bacterial infection which is associated with poor clinical outcome especially among critically ill patients. We aimed to characterize the lower respiratory tract bacterial microbiome of COVID-19 critically ill patients in comparison to COVID-19-negative patients. We performed a 16S rRNA profiling on bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples collected between April and May 2020 from 24 COVID-19 critically ill subjects and 24 patients with non-COVID-19 pneumonia. Lung microbiome of critically ill patients with COVID-19 was characterized by a different ba

Prevalence and diversity of carbapenem-resistant bacteria in untreated drinking water in Portugal.

We examined the prevalence and diversity of carbapenem-resistant bacteria (CRB) in untreated drinking water. Prevalence was estimated in plate count agar (PCA) and R2A media with or without antibiotics. Clonal relatedness of isolates was established by repetitive extragenic palindroitic (REP)-PCR. Phylogeny was based on the 16S rRNA gene. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed by disc diffusion methods. Genes encoding beta-lactamases and integrases were inspected by PCR. CRB ranged from 0.02% to 15.9% of cultivable bacteria, while ampicillin-resistant bacteria ranged from 1.5% to 31.4%. Car

Mining Microbial Niches: Sources of Bacteria for Enhancing Plant Growth and Resilience to pH, Salinity, Drought and Phytophthora infestans.

Enhancing plant resilience is crucial for sustainable agriculture and ecosystem health in an era of climate change and the global spread of plant pathogens. The strategic exploitation of diverse ecological niches to isolate microorganisms that promote plant growth, suppress pathogens and tolerate abiotic stress conditions is paramount. Here, 21 bacterial strains were isolated from three distinct sources: digestate produced from straw feedstock, Quercus ilex roots mycorrhised with Tuber aestivum, and a peperino stone fountain. These isolates were assigned to eight genera, Bacillus, Pseudomonas,

Freshwater and Marine Environments in California Are a Reservoir of Carbapenem-Resistant Bacteria.

Carbapenems are last-resort antibiotics used to treat multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. Resistance to carbapenems has been designated as an urgent threat and is increasing in healthcare settings. However, little is still known about the distribution and characteristics of carbapenem-resistant bacteria (CRB) outside of healthcare settings. Here, we surveyed the distribution of CRB in ten diverse freshwater and seawater environments in California, U.S., ranging from San Luis Obispo County to San Bernardino County, combining both direct isolation and enrichment approaches to increase the

Repressed Beauveria bassiana infections in Delia antiqua due to associated microbiota.

BACKGROUND: Insects form both mutualistic and antagonistic relationships with microbes, and some antagonistic microbes have been used as biocontrol agents (BCAs) in pest management. Contextually, BCAs may be inhibited by beneficial insect symbionts, which can become potential barriers to entomopathogen-dependent pest biocontrol. Using the symbioses formed by one devastating dipteran pest, Delia antiqua, and its associated microbes as a model system, we sought to determine whether the antagonistic interaction between BCAs and microbial symbionts could affect the outcome of entomopathogen-depend

Evaluation of bacterial diversity in a swine manure composting system contaminated with veterinary antibiotics (VAs).

Composting has become an alternative for the treatment of organic effluents, due to its low cost, easy handling, and a great capacity for treating swine manure. As it is a biological process, many microorganisms are involved during the composting process and act in the degradation of organic matter and nutrients and also have the ability to degrade contaminants and accelerate the transformations during composting. The objective of this work was to identify microorganisms present in the swine effluent composting system, under the contamination by most used veterinary drugs in Brazil. The compos

Weed control, maize (Zea mays L.) metabolism, and rhizosphere microbiome of hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles loaded with S-metolachlor and ZnO quantum dots.

BACKGROUND: Conventional pesticide formulations employ large amounts of organic solvents, raising concerns regarding their environmental contamination, pesticide residues, and potential toxicity to non-target organisms. Hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) are non-toxic to both animals and plants, making them a suitable candidate for pesticide loading and delivery studies. RESULTS: HMSNs with an average particle size of 165 nm were synthesized using a self-template method. Fluorescein isothiocyanate was successfully conjugated to the HMSNs to enable the investigation of their transp

Gut microbiota profiles as potential indicators of irradiation-induced quality loss in mass-reared Aedes albopictus males.

Aim: The Sterile Insect Technique is a promising method for Aedes albopictus control, but its effectiveness hinges on male quality, which may be compromised during mass-rearing and irradiation. Reliable biological indicators capable of reflecting irradiation-induced quality loss remain limited. Gut microbiota regulates mosquito development, immunity, and metabolism and may therefore provide potential indicators of sterile male quality. This study explored whether gut microbiota composition can reflect irradiation-induced quality impairment in males of a long-term (over 3 years) mass-reared Ae.

What grows in the sink splash zone.

BACKGROUND: The hospital sink drain microbiome can harbour opportunistic pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes. Patients may be exposed to waterborne pathogens via water outlets and sink drains. We have previously shown that water from a clinical handwash basin can splash up to 2 m away from the sink/tap. Here we wanted to identify which organisms could be cultured from environmental sampling within the splash zone. METHODS: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) is a large UK tertiary centre. We placed an SAS Super 180 air sampler within the splash zone at approximately 1 m from a

Microplastics exacerbate antibiotic resistance by regulating microbial and functional gene dynamics in sludge and food waste composting.

The presence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microplastics (MPs) as co-contaminants in sewage sludge possess environmental concern. Nevertheless, the effect of specific MP types on ARGs propagation and the mechanistic drivers during composting require further elucidation. This study analyzed the impact of MPs polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and their mixture (PE+PP) on the propagation of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) during sludge composting. Results revealed that MPs significantly increased ARGs abundance, with the highest enrichment observed in PE (2.06 log-fold),
