BACKGROUND: It is extremely rare for cancer to present first as an intramedullary spinal cord metastasis. Furthermore, because it is unlikely for spinal cord neoplasm to present acutely, an acute presentation may signify metastatic disease and should be considered in the initial differential diagnosis.
METHODS: The authors present a case of a 59-year-old man presenting with Brown-Sequard syndrome and in whom metastatic lung adenocarcinoma to the spinal cord was subsequently discovered. Review of the literature reveals this case to be one of only a very few where intramedullary tumor was the f

Three adult patients are reported with asymptomatic localized widening of the central canal of the spinal cord. These patients were followed for a period of 24 years by imaging and/or clinical history and physical examination without evidence of signs or symptoms related to the spinal cord. This condition probably represents persistence into adult life of a fetal configuration of the central canal of the spinal cord. This process may be termed "idiopathic localized hydromyelia" to distinguish it from syringomyelia secondary to such causes as Chiari malformation, trauma, infection, or neoplasm.

Spinal seeding of primary malignant intracranial tumors via CSF is common. However, this is rare in low-grade glial tumors. Cranial leptomeningeal metastasis of primary spinal cord low-grade gliomas at diagnosis or relapse is extremely rare. Leptomeningeal metastasis of spinal cord low-grade tumors may mimic tuberculous meningitis in children. A patient with primary spinal cord low-grade neoplasm mimicked tuberculous meningitis is presented. The patient successfully treated with chemoradiotherapy. At the end of 19-month follow-up, diffuse leptomeningeal infiltration and a dural mass compatible

STUDY DESIGN: Narrative review.
OBJECTIVE: To summarize the epidemiology and oncologic patterns of metastatic and primary cervical spine tumors and evaluate the classification systems, instability assessments, cord compression frameworks, and prognostic tools used in their management.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although relatively uncommon, cervical spine tumors carry disproportionate clinical consequences. Epidural spinal cord compression can cause quadriplegia and respiratory failure, while the region's distinctive anatomy and biomechanics complicate oncologic decision-making.

A ten year old castrated male domestic short haired cat, was presented with clinical signs related to the cauda equina. The results of the neurological examination, diagnostic procedures, and clinical course are presented. At necropsy a glioblastoma of the caudal spinal cord was present. The difficulties in distinguishing between neoplasms arising in the cauda equina and the caudal spinal cord are discussed. A comparative discussion of the cauda equina syndrome is presented.

Background The phrase "compressive myelopathy" refers to compression of the spinal cord, either internally or externally. This compression might arise from various sources such as a herniated disc, post-traumatic compression, and epidural abscess as well as epidural or intradural neoplasms. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays a crucial role in differentiating between compressive and non-compressive myelopathy. After eliminating compressive lesions, attention is directed toward intrinsic cord-related causes of acute myelopathy including vascular, infectious, and inflammatory pathologies. Aim

Metastatic bone disease in 322 patients was analyzed to assess the frequency and behavior of disseminated carcinoma to the vertebral column. Breast, lung, and prostate neoplasms were the most frequent tumors of origin in the 55% of patients who had vertebral lesions. The lumbar spine was the site of the greatest number of metastases. Back pain did not occur in 36% of the 179 patients with spinal disease. Cord compression occurred in 20% of the patients with vertebral involvement, and prostate tumors were the most frequent neoplasm to cause epidural spinal cord impingement. Hypernephroma was th

Meningiomas and schwannomas are relatively common central nervous system neoplasms, but patients harbouring multiple meningiomas or schwannomas are rare. We present the case of a 27 year-old patient with Neurofibromatosis type 2 with multiple associated intracranial meningiomas and spinal cord neurofibromas at various levels. Patients with Neurofibromatosis type 2 should be followed up for life with serial magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spinal cord to detect new and recurrent tumours at these sites.

Ectopic adrenal cortical neoplasms of the spinal cord are extremely rare. To date only 10 such cases have been described. We present a case of a 46-year-old woman with lower back pain radiating to the right gluteal and posterior femoral regions, without a history of traumatic injury. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracic and lumbar spine showed an intradural, extramedullary, well-circumscribed, contrast-enhancing lesion located in the T12-L1 region, hypo- to isointense on T2-weighted imaging, and isointense on T1. Complete surgical removal of the lesion, measuring 3 × 2.5 × 1 cm, wa

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary spinal cord tumors are rare neoplasms but frequently cause significant neurological deficits because of the limited compensatory capacity of the spinal cord. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the imaging modality of choice and often allows a reliable differential diagnosis based on characteristic imaging findings.
OBJECTIVES: To provide a practical neuroradiological approach to the diagnosis of intramedullary spinal cord tumors, including recent developments in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification.

Forty-eight Gd-DTPA-enhanced MR examinations of the spine were performed in 40 patients referred for MR because of clinically suspected spinal tumor or for further evaluation of an expanded cord. The study group consisted of 32 patients with spinal tumors (seven ependymomas; seven astrocytomas; four hemangioblastomas; two arteriovenous malformations; two unidentified intramedullary neoplasms; four meningiomas; and single cases of metastatic breast carcinoma, cavernous hemangioma with associated hematomyelia, neurinoma, angiolipoma, drop metastasis from medulloblastoma, and epidermoid with dias

BACKGROUND: Spinal angiolipomas (SA) are rare primary tumors accounting for 0.14-1.2% of all spinal cord and spine tumors and approximately 3% of extradural spinal neoplasms (<0.1% of all primary CNS tumors). Histologically, SA consists of mature adipocytes and abnormally developed vessels. Clinical presentation of this tumor is due to severe spinal cord compression.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors present a 33-year-old patient with severe spinal cord compression who underwent resection of Th6-Th8 spinal angiolipoma. The Pubmed, Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and eLibrary databases were

In adulthood, spinal cord MRI abnormalities such as T2-weighted hyperintensities and atrophy are commonly associated with a large variety of causes (inflammation, infections, neoplasms, vascular and spondylotic diseases). Occasionally, they can be due to rare metabolic or genetic diseases, in which the spinal cord involvement can be a prominent or even predominant feature, or a secondary one. This review focuses on these rare diseases and associated spinal cord abnormalities, which can provide important but over-ridden clues for the diagnosis. The review was based on a PubMed search (search te

Although it is quite rare, second primary neoplasms in cancer patients may present with the signs and symptoms of malignant spinal cord compression. Primary spinal cord tumours in the cancer patients may be deceptive and considered as the recurrent first cancer. Therefore, it should be precisely differentiated and appropriately managed. We report such a case of intramedullary ependymoma of the cervical spinal cord mimicking metatstatic recurrent lymphoma and causing cord compression. A 50-year-old man developed intramedullary ependymoma of the cervical spinal cord 1.5 years following chemoradi

Vascular malformations on the ventral aspect of the spinal cord are difficult to access surgically. Recently, selected lesions have been treated with endovascular embolization. However, embolization using currently approved agents may not be permanently effective, and recanalization rates range from 25 to 83% in the literature. Additionally, many of these lesions are not amenable to endovascular treatment because of the inadequate diameter, tortuosity, or lack of collateral flow of the anterior spinal artery from which the feeding arteries arise. Surgical approaches to these lesions have been

This article addresses uncommon primary spinal cord tumors, neoplasms of the conus medullaris, filum terminale, cauda equina region, and secondary neoplastic involvement of the spinal cord and CSF spaces. Although many primary intramedullary tumors discussed are individually rare, secondary neoplastic disease, including intramedullary metastases and leptomeningeal dissemination is encountered more frequently in clinical practice and represents a major cause of rapidly progressive neurological symptoms. Imaging appearances across these entities often overlap with common primary tumors and non-n

RATIONALE: Glioneuronal tumor with neuropil-like islands (GTNI) is a distinctive neoplasm located in the cerebrum. Moreover, spinal GTNI is extremely rare. Herein, we present a case of spinal GTNI and review the related literature.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 38-year-old Chinese woman presented to our hospital with a 6-month history of neck pain and a 1-month history of dizziness.
DIAGNOSES: Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large intramedullary mass spanning the length of the spinal cord from C1 to C4. Microscopic and immunohistochemical examinations of the tumor tissue revealed findings typica

To determine the MR criteria that are effective for differentiating intramedullary neoplasms from syringo- or hydromyelia, we reviewed MR scans made on prototype and commercial imagers of 33 patients with surgically confirmed cord abnormalities, including nine intramedullary neoplasms and 20 cysts (syringo- or hydromyelia). Two radiologists who did not know the clinical and radiologic diagnoses were asked to evaluate the scans with respect to cord expansion, distinctness of the disease margin, homogeneity, and signal intensity. These observations were correlated with the proved diagnoses. The

An analysis of the clinical course of the disease in 516 patients with tumors of the spinal cord and vertebral column made it possible to identify 4 types of the disease, namely fulminant, acutely progressive, remittent and continuously progressive. The first two types were predominantly observed in patients with primary and secondary malignant tumors, the latter two types predominantly in patients with benign tumors. The early diagnosis of tumors of the spinal cord and vertebral column is difficult but peridurography may render a substantial assistance in such diagnosis. Using this method neo

A dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) with spinal perimedullary venous drainage can cause progressive myelopathy, and it is sometimes incorrectly diagnosed as another spinal cord disease. Here we report the cases of three individuals with a DAVF (one craniocervical junction DAVF and two tentorial DAVFs) with progressive myelopathy showing unique magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings. MR T2*WI or susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) demonstrated symmetrical dark signal intensity lesions predominantly in the dorsal aspect of medulla and the central gray matter of cervical spinal cord that sho
