Some indigenous microorganisms have been shown to localize in certain anatomical sites of the digestive tract of mammals. We studied the ceca of normal adult rats by light and electron microscopy to determine whether any specific bacterial population localizes in this area. In this study 9 human temporal bones from 8 individuals were fixed with Karnovsky solution by perilymphatic perfusion within 1-3 h after death and examined using the "block-surface method' (Spoendlin and Brun, 1974; Spoendlin and Schrott, 1987) and the "micro-dissection method' (Johnsson and Hawkins, 1967). PURPOSE: The ultrastructural nature of the preequatorial vitreoretinal interface was studied to elucidate the predisposing role for peripheral retinal tear formation.
METHODS: Fourteen enucleated globes from seven decreased patients were examined. The patients ranged in age from 16-88 years, with an average age of 40 years. None of the patients had a history of ocular or systemic disease that could have affected the eyes. Changes in the vasculature of the chinchilla cochlea were quantitatively assessed 45 days after impulse noise exposure of either 155- or 160-dB peak sound pressure level. The condition of the vessels in the lateral wall and spiral lamina of each cochlea was evaluated in terms of 20 morphological parameters.
