Rat bite fever is an under-reported, under-diagnosed emerging zoonosis with worldwide distribution. Besides Spirillum minus, Streptobacillus moniliformis is the major causative microorganism although it usually colonises rats without any clinical signs. A group of house rats (Rattus rattus) kept in a zoo exhibition for educational purposes suffered from neurological signs including disorientation, torticollis, stall walking, ataxia and death. Gross pathological and histo-pathological examinations of the investigated rats revealed high-grade otitis interna et media, from which Streptobacillus n

The gastric spirillum Helicobacter felis, originally isolated from the cat stomach, colonizes the stomachs of germfree rats. Studies were designed to examine the pathological and serological responses of germfree rats inoculated orally with H. felis. At 2 weeks postinoculation, the gastric mucosa of germfree rats had lymphocytes and eosinophils scattered in small foci throughout the subglandular region of the antrum. Small numbers of lymphocytes were present in the subglandular portion of the antral mucosa that focally extended through the lamina propria towards the luminal surface. Eight week

INTRODUCTION: Synanthropic rodents of the genus Rattus are reservoirs of different zoonotic bacteria, such as Streptobacillus moniliformis and Spirillum minus. These are mainly transmitted by bites and can cause an infection called rat bite fever, which, if not treated quickly, can cause death. Given that currently the rat bite accident is not a mandatory notification event within the health system of the City of Buenos Aires, there is no record of it.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In order to obtain information about the problem, a survey was carried out through an interview to investigate variable

Rat bite fever (RBF) is a rare infectious zoonotic disease caused by two bacterial species: the Gram-negative rod Streptobacillus moniliformis and the Gram-negative coiled rod Spirillum minus. The association between RBF and skin vasculitis and arthritis has been observed. The aim of this paper was to present a case of rat-bite fever with symptoms of skin vasculitis and arthritis, associated with high titers of ANCA antibodies and anti-endothelial cell antibodies suggestive of primary vasculitis. The patient was successfully treated with antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, l

A novel chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay using bacterial magnetic particles (BMPs) has been developed for highly sensitive and rapid detection of immunoglobulin G. Antibody was immobilized onto BMPs using the heterobifunctional reagents sulfosuccinimidyl 6-[3'-(2-pyridyldithio) propionamido]hexanoate (sulfo-LC-SPDP) and sulfosuccinimidyl 4-(N-maleimidomethyl)cyclohexane-1-carboxylate (sulfo-SMCC). For the highly sensitive immunoassay method using these BMPs, a good relationship was obtained between the luminescence intensity and mouse IgG concentration in the range of 1-10(5) fg/mL. Furthe

A former mercury plant, where mercury salts and organomercurials for pesticide use were produced, caused soil contamination in high concentrations. Typical organomercurial products included ethylmercury, phenylmercury, methoxyethylmercury and ethoxyethylmercury compounds. Risk assessment of these sites must be carried out before any major clean-up processes can be planned. A sensitive speciation technique for the various organomercury species in environmental matrices is a prerequisite for toxicity investigations. In this connection, a high-performance liquid chromatography-atomic fluorescence

Rat-bite fever is a rare zoonotic infection caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus, which is characterised by fever, rash and arthritis. The arthritis has previously been described as non-suppurative and isolation of the organism from synovial fluid as very uncommon. This article reports a case of septic arthritis diagnosed as rat-bite fever when the organism was cultured from synovial fluid and reviews another 15 cases of S. moniliformis septic arthritis reported in the worldwide literature since 1985. Articles were included in this review if S. moniliformis was cultured fr

1. Observations are reported on the virulence of various types of spirochetes and filtrable viruses after storage at - 787deg;C. for periods up to 3 years. 2. Five specimens of Treponema pallidum belonging to 4 different strains, and 7 specimens of T. pertenue belonging to 5 different strains were tested after storage for approximately 3 years. With one exception each specimen contained actively motile treponemes, and all specimens were highly pathogenic for rabbits. Many other specimens of these spirochetes stored for shorter periods were also tested with similar results. 3. Relapsing fever s

'Gastrospirillum hominis' is a 'new' tightly coiled gram-negative bacterium carrying bundles of sheathed polar flagella. It has been rather infrequently detected in antral and, even more rarely, in fundic mucosa samples removed at endoscopy from patients investigated for Helicobacter pylori colonization. Until now, it has remained noncultivable but has successfully been maintained in laboratory mice. Its identity with similar bacteria found in the stomachs of cats, dogs, monkeys, pigs, and other animals is uncertain. It was probably already seen by early investigators in the first half of this

Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens is a motile, spiral anaerobic bacterium with bipolar tufts of flagella. Reports of clinical illness due to A. succiniciproducens are rare. In a retrospective review of anaerobic isolates referred to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) from January 1, 1975, through January 31, 1986, isolates of A. succiniciproducens from the blood of 21 patients were identified. A single patient whose blood isolate had not been received at CDC was included in the review. These 22 patients were from 15 states. Their mean age was 58.6 years. Underlying disorders included al

Isolation of a spiral-shaped bacterium closely related to Helicobacter pylori from the cat stomach made it possible to investigate new small animal models of gastric infection. Pure cultures of this bacterium, provisionally named "Helicobacter felis," were fed to germ-free mice. The organism colonized the stomach in large numbers in mucus and deep in the gastric pits and showed the same gastric trophism found with H. pylori. Significant histopathology was seen in all H. felis-infected mice. At 2 weeks postinfection, an acute inflammatory response was seen composed primarily of eosinophils and

Rat-bite fever is an over-looked, global zoonotic disease that has a mortality rate of up to 13%, if untreated. Historically, this rat-borne disease has been attributed to one of two causative agents, Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus. Given the confirmed presence of multiple invasive Rattus host species, high rat densities in urban, informal human settlements and increasing reports of rat bites in South Africa, we undertook a retrospective assessment of Streptobacillus in rats sampled from 16 urban sites, in Gauteng, the smallest but most populous Province in South Africa. BACKGROUND: Campylobacter fetus is a rare but serious pathogen, mainly affecting immunocompromised patients. Central nervous system infections, particularly meningitis, are uncommon; only one case has been reported after liver transplantation and none after splenectomy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report meningitis and bacteremia caused by C. fetus subsp. fetus (Cff) in a 70-year-old man with liver transplantation and splenectomy for hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis, on long-term immunosuppression. He presented with intermittent fever; blood cultures grew C. fetus, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
