BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause, characterized by sacroiliitis and spondylitis. To date, treatment of AS has been limited to the alleviation of symptoms, mainly using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). For patients refractory or intolerant to NSAIDs, the disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) have been used as a second line approach. Methotrexate (MTX) is currently one of the most widely used DMARDs and its efficacy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been confirmed (Suarez-Almazor 2003). There is uncertainty whether

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a complex, potentially debilitating disease that is insidious in onset, progressing to radiological sacroiliitis over several years. Patients with symptomatic AS lose productivity owing to work disability and unemployment, have a substantial use of healthcare resources, and reduced quality of life. The pathogenesis of AS is poorly understood. However, immune mediated mechanisms involving human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-B27, inflammatory cellular infiltrates, cytokines (for example, tumour necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 10), and genetic and environmental fact

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) with juvenile onset (under 17 years of age) is not infrequent. Thirty-six cases were studied, amounting to 18% of patients hospitalized between 1977 and 1981. The following criteria were used for diagnosis: radiologic sacroiliitis (typical AS), presence of HLA B27 and/or pelvic or vertebral clinical manifestations (possible AS). 31 patients (85%) were boys. Mean age at onset was 12.3 +/- 2.8 years. In three cases, AS was found in a member of the family of the propositus and in one case there was cutaneous psoriasis. Usually (29 cases) onset was in the lower limbs: a

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic rheumatic disease that predominantly affects the axial skeleton, causing pain and functional impairment. Kinesiophobia, or fear of movement, is common in patients with chronic pain conditions and can significantly hinder treatment outcomes. This study aims to assess the level of kinesiophobia in AS patients and explore its relationship with demographic characteristics, disease duration, pain intensity, disease activity, and functional impairment.
METHODS: This single-center study included 35 AS patients from July 2021 to July 2023. Patient

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects axial joints and the changes in the vertebrae cause typical kyphotic posture. In patients with ankylosing spondylitis, the postural changes, including cervical flexion, decreased lumbar lordosis, posterior rotation of pelvis, hip extension, knee flexion, and plantar flexion of ankle along with kyphosis, may occur in the upcoming terms of the disease and may negatively affect balance. Joint and eye involvements; muscular, vestibular and proprioceptional changes can also affect balance. This review evaluates the ankylos

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause and affects mainly the spine, but can also affect other joints. Disease progression may result in loss of mobility and function. Sulfasalazine is a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug used in the treatment of AS. However, its efficacy remains unclear. This is an update of a Cochrane review first published in 2005.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of sulfasalazine for the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
SEARCH METHODS: We searched for relevant randomized and quasi-randomized tri

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a prototypical inflammatory disease of the locomotor system affecting axial skeleton. It is part of the general group of spondyloarthopathies (SpA). Its strong association with histocompatibility antigen HLA-B27 is known since 1973. However, HLA-B27 contribution to AS genetic risk is approximately 16%. Therefore, other genes are necessarily involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. Genomic development and the possibility of making genome wide screening have contributed enormously to the study of the disease. In this paper, we describe the actual knowledge abou

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory arthritis that affects the spine and sacroiliac joints. It causes significant disability and is associated with a number of other features including peripheral arthritis, anterior uveitis, psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Significant progress has been made in the genetics of AS have in the last five years, leading to new treatments in trial, and major leaps in understanding of the aetiopathogenesis of the disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the joints, included in the group of seronegative spondyloarthropathies. Its main characteristic is the fusion of the bones in the spine, which causes loss of flexibility of the back and neck. Other large articulations and connective tissues can be affected by the inflammatory process. It affects mainly men between the ages of 20 and 40; it is rare after the age of 50. Women represent a minority of patients. There is little information about AS in the anesthetic literature. The objective of this article

Diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis is still delayed by many years. Several efforts have been made in the past few years to shorten this delay. A new set of criteria for inflammatory back pain has performed better than previous sets. MRI has evolved to become the standard imaging modality for the detection of sacroiliitis during early disease, and it clearly outperforms quantitative scintigraphy, which was the standard screening test for many years. Promising new developments such as whole body MRI and ultrasound (sonography) for the detection of enthesitis or sacroiliitis deserve further eval

Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory joint disease in which inflammation of the entheses gradually causes local ossification and ankylosis. Diffuse osteoporosis responsible for bone fragility is another feature established by recent data. The bone loss predominates at the spine and can cause vertebral fractures that are rare but nonnegligible sources of mortality and morbidity late in the course of the disease.

Depending on its severity the fixed flexion deformity of the spine in patients with ankylosing spondylitis leads to significant disturbance in the activity of daily living. The surgical correction of such a deformity requires a special knowledge in the context of spinal surgery. Meticulous surgical procedures were especially developed for this kind of spinal deformity. Considering the rate of complications it is necessary to select carefully the patients undergoing these procedures. The surgeon must be familiar in handling these patients and these special surgical procedures.

The clinical spectrum of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is wider than just symptomatic sacroiliitis. The disease may be atypical or may occur as forme fruste. Atypical cases are encompassed in classification criteria for the whole family of spondyloarthropathies. AS may result primarily from additive genetic variability. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and physical exercise remain the cornerstone in the treatment of AS. Core sets for the assessment of the disease now exist for different treatment settings.
