BACKGROUND: There is ample evidence to suggest sex- and gender-based differences in the incidence of sports-related concussions. The mechanisms of concussion may vary between male and female athletes and contribute to this observed difference. Understanding the underlying etiology by pooling data from primary studies across different settings and sport types will inform interventions that can reduce concussion rates.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Specifically, we asked: (1) In which sports are female athletes less likely to experience concussions from player contact? (2) In which sports are female athl

The Cresta Run is a unique toboggan run and exists in only one place in the world, namely, St. Moritz, Switzerland. The height of the resort is over 6,000 feet (1828 metres). Therefore there is a diminution of oxygen content in the air. Normally it takes from three to seven days for a person from lower habitat altitudes, visiting the resort, to become fully acclimatized if they are to be involved in energetic competitive sport. The age and fitness of the toboggan rider is a factor. The Cresta Run takes place each year and has, since its inception under the auspices of the St Moritz Tobogganing

Extraarticular wrist syndromes are relatively common causes of underperformance or nonparticipation in sports. Many of these conditions may be caused by nonathletic activities. The spectrum of pathologic signs ranges from tendon inflammation, stenosis, and subluxation to neuropathies, vascular conditions, congenital anomalies, cysts, calcarea, and callosities. Appropriate treatment requires an accurate diagnosis and specific measures directed toward the condition. Moreover, many of these problems may be preventable by modification of sports equipment, proper conditioning, alteration of athleti

Five hundred and eighteen Otago primary school accidents are described. Falls and accidents described as striking against or struck by a person or object, represented 82 percent of all the accidents. Nearly a third of all accidents resulted in fractures; the upper limb being the most common site of injury. Playthings and sports equipment were involved in over a quarter of the accidents. Of the accidents described, falls from playground equipment offer the best potential for the prevention of injury.

Bungee jumping is a recreational sport that has gained world-wide popularity since its inception in 1955. Over 2 million individuals have performed bungee jumps since that time. The injuries and deaths which have occurred have made safety an integral issue in the practice of the sport. Although early reports of significant injuries are infrequent, more recent investigations have indicated severe sequelae, including ocular haemorrhage, peroneal nerve palsy and quadriplegia. Reports of minor trauma have also been numerous. Aetiology includes natural forces, impact, technician error, equipment fa

Blunt precordial blows triggering ventricular fibrillation (commotio cordis) represent a leading cause of sudden death in young athletes. Attention has focused on the primary prevention of these tragedies with chest barriers. The U.S. Commotio Cordis Registry was accessed to determine the likelihood of sudden death in athletes exposed to precordial blows while wearing chest protectors. Of 182 cases of commotio cordis, 85 (47%) occurred during practice or competition in organized sports. In 32 of these 85 competitive athletes (38%), fatal chest blows occurred despite the presence of potentially

BACKGROUND: Foot and ankle injuries are common in sports, particularly in cleated athletes. Traditionally, the athletic shoe has not been regarded as a piece of protective equipment but rather as a part of the uniform, with a primary focus on performance and subjective feedback measures of comfort. Changes in turf and shoe design have poorly understood implications on the health and safety of players.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A literature search of the MEDLINE and PubMed databases was conducted. Keywords included athletic shoewear, cleated shoe, football shoes, and shoewear, and search parameter

Cycling is a leading cause of mild traumatic brain injury in the US. While bicycle helmets help protect cyclists who crash, limited biomechanical data exist differentiating helmet protective capabilities. This paper describes the development of a bicycle helmet evaluation scheme based in real-world cyclist accidents and brain injury mechanisms. Thirty helmet models were subjected to oblique impacts at six helmet locations and two impact velocities. The summation of tests for the analysis of risk (STAR) equation, which condenses helmet performance from a range of tests into a single value, was

Therapists treating athletes with hand and wrist injuries may be involved in all stages of recovery, from the acute phase to return to sport. This article gives case examples of how creative use of custom and commercially available orthoses, splints, tape, and braces can augment various stages of recovery. Understanding the specific demands of the sport and respect for the standards of care are imperative to fabricating or fitting an athlete with the best device or customization of the athlete's own equipment for a safe return to sport.

3374 accidents occurring on the field of sport during the years 1975--1977 accounted for 19% of all accidents dealt with at the Institute of Kinderchirurgie in Graz. 51% of the accidents were caused by the typical winter sports: skiing, tobogganing, ice-skating and ski-jumping with skiing accounting for 75% of the accidents. The fracture localization typical of the different kinds of winter sport is dealt with in detail. The correct size and safety of the equipment were found to be particularly important in the prevention of such accidents in childhood.

INTRODUCTION: Pressure injuries are a significant health concern for individuals with mobility impairments, impacting participation and quality of life. Sport is a meaningful leisure occupation for many but poses unique occupational, physical, and environmental challenges which increase the risk of pressure injuries. Occupational therapists can support those with mobility impairments in balancing pressure injury risk and participation in sport; however, little is known about effective management in sport. This scoping review aimed to map existing evidence on pressure injury prevention and mana
