In 12 cases of family abuse of disabled elderly persons, the majority of the abused were women. Caretakers included spouses, children, siblings or other relatives. Domestic violence is an ever-increasing problem in modern day society and includes physical abuse directed against children, spouses, and the elderly. Dentists are frequently the first health professionals to render treatment to an abused patient and must consequently be knowledgeable in recognizing the tell-tale signs of abuse and be aware of their reporting obligations and requirements. Early recognition with timely referrals to appropriate agencies can possibly help prevent more significant injuries and even death from occurring in abused patients.

This study examines the rate of domestic violence against adult women by men partners. Two hundred eighteen women at two primary care clinics responded anonymously to a questionnaire. Forty-eight percent reported verbal abuse, 44 percent minor physical abuse, and 28 percent severe physical abuse. Abuse was common (16 percent) before marriage.
