Lower limb myalgias in a man who used to "climb the stairs": an atypical abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Atypical presentation of emergency abdominal aortic aneurysm comprises a wide spectrum of symptoms. Lower limbs' involvement is infrequent, usually monolateral and with clear vascular features. We report the case of a 58-year-old patient who complained exclusively about symmetric lower limb myalgias without vascular features, after having repeatedly climbed the stairs of the school he worked in. The surprising final diagnosis was of rupturing abdominal aortic aneurysm; the patient was sent to emergency surgery and survived.

Translation of the strength, assistance in walking, rising from a chair, climbing stairs, and falls questionnaire into Hindi.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is common among cancer patients and is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. The strength, assistance in walking, rising from a chair, climbing stairs, and falls (SARC-F) questionnaire is a simple screening tool for evaluating sarcopenia; however, no validated Hindi version is currently available for use in Indian oncology practice. AIM: To translate and culturally adapt the SARC-F questionnaire into Hindi and assess its reliability and content validity. METHODS: This single-center cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary cancer center in India. The quest

Factors associated with stair climbing ability in patients with knee osteoarthritis and knee arthroplasty: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: People with knee osteoarthritis (OA) report ongoing limitations in climbing stairs, even after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The aim of this systematic review was to synthesise the available evidence of factors affecting stair climbing ability in patients with knee OA before and after TKA. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted of common electronic databases. All English language abstracts where stair-climbing was assessed in patients with either knee OA or at least 6 months after TKA, and a relationship to any physical, psychological or demographic factors was reported. RESULTS

Anteroposterior and varus-valgus laxity of the knee increase after stair climbing in patients with mild osteoarthritis.

The aim of this study was to measure exercise-induced changes in knee joint laxity in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The study subjects were 46 female patients with OA and 22 age- and sex-matched normal controls. Radiographs of the knee were taken in all subjects, and the disease severity was graded according to the Kellgren and Lawrence (K-L) grading system. The K-L grade of the control subjects (non-OA group) was 0-1. The OA patients were divided into those with mild OA (K-L grade 2, n = 20) and advanced OA (K-L grade 3-4, n = 26). The subject climbed up and down 8 steps on a stairc

The Dynamic Gait Index in healthy older adults: the role of stair climbing, fear of falling and gender.

The Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) was developed as a clinical tool to assess gait, balance and fall risk. Because the DGI evaluates not only usual steady-state walking, but also walking during more challenging tasks, it may be an especially sensitive test. The present investigation evaluated the DGI and its association with falls, fear of falling, depression, anxiety and other measures of balance and mobility in 278 healthy elderly individuals. Measures included the DGI, the Berg Balance Test (BBT), the Timed Up and Go (TUAG), the Mini-Mental State Exam (MMSE), the Unified Parkinson's Disease Ratin

Effects of track-based stair climbing robot on muscle activity, usability, and psychological anxiety: a preliminary study.

This study investigated the effects of using the LiftCar-150 track-based stair-climbing robot on muscle activity, usability, and psychological anxiety. While stair-climbing robots enhance mobility for individuals with physical disabilities, existing research has predominantly focused on engineering perspectives, with limited attention to user-centered outcomes. Ten healthy participants and an 80 kg dummy rider completed stair-climbing tasks at slow (5 m/min) and fast (7 m/min) speeds. Muscle activity in the middle trapezius (MT), erector spinae (ES), multifidus (MF), gluteus maximus (Gmax), gl

Brief Vigorous Stair Climbing Effectively Improves Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease: A Randomized Trial.

Background: Cardiac rehabilitation exercise reduces the risk of secondary cardiovascular disease. Interval training is a time-efficient alternative to traditional cardiac rehabilitation exercise and stair climbing is an accessible means. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of a high-intensity interval stair climbing intervention on improving cardiorespiratory fitness ( V ˙ O 2 peak ) compared to standard cardiac rehabilitation care. Methods: Twenty participants with coronary artery disease (61 ± 7 years, 18 males, two females) were randomly assigned to either traditional moderate-intensity

Concurrent validity and measurement error of stair climb test in people with pre-radiographic to mild knee osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Stair climbing is the task first affected in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA); therefore, the precise measurement of time required to climb stairs is important to identify mobility limitations, particularly in the early phase of knee OA. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aimed to examine the test-retest reliability, measurement error, and concurrent validity of the stopwatch-based stair-climb test (SCT) in adults with pre-radiographic to mild knee OA. METHODS: Fifty-nine participants (mean age, 59.1 [range, 50-69] years; 72.9% female) with Kellgren and Lawrence grade ≤2 disease

Rostral Mandibular Fracture and Dentoalveolar Trauma Secondary to Climbing Stairs With a Foreign Object in the Mouth in Four Dogs.

Rostral mandibular injuries present unique challenges for repair. The presence of strategically important teeth which occupy a large volume of the mandible, multiple tooth roots and the mental neurovascular bundle all combine to limit treatment options that serve to preserve the form and function of the involved structures. This case series describes the approach to treatment for rostral mandibular trauma seen in four dogs with a unique etiology that has not been previously described.

The Effect of Lumbar Disc Herniation on Musculoskeletal Loadings in the Spinal Region During Level Walking and Stair Climbing.

BACKGROUND People with low back pain (LBP) alter their motion patterns during level walking and stair climbing due to pain or fear. However, the alternations of load sharing during the two activities are largely unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of LBP caused by lumbar disc herniation (LDH) on the muscle activities of 17 main trunk muscle groups and the intradiscal forces acting on the five lumbar discs. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twenty-six healthy adults and seven LDH patients were recruited to perform level walking and stair climbing in the Gait Analysis Laborator

Biomechanical effects of loading methods on the patellofemoral joint during stair climbing: based on statistical parametric mapping analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Stair negotiation with external loads imposes substantial demands on the structural and functional integrity of the patellofemoral joint. Current research predominantly focuses on singular loading modalities or level walking conditions, often employing discrete time-point comparisons. This study innovatively employs Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) to systematically analyze patellofemoral biomechanical characteristics during stair negotiation with different load-carrying strategies. METHODS: Twenty healthy males performed stair negotiation tasks under shoulder-load carriage

Gait Analysis Reveals that Total Hip Arthroplasty Increases Power Production in the Hip During Level Walking and Stair Climbing.

BACKGROUND: total hip arthroplasty (THA) is associated with decreased pain and improved function, including increased walking speed, but it does not always improve overall joint mechanics during activities of daily living such as level walking and stair climbing. The hip's ability to generate power to move and allow for smooth and efficient forward motion is critical to success after surgery. Although osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip limits the power of the affected joint, it is not known whether other joints in the affected limb or in the contralateral limb need to produce more power to compens

Energy conservation technique improves dyspnoea when patients with severe COPD climb stairs: a randomised crossover study.

In this randomised, crossover trial, 22 patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease climbed six flights of stairs (108 steps) twice, under two test conditions: (1) energy conservation technique (ECT): participants were asked to rest for at least 5 seconds every three steps and (2) control condition: participants climbed the stairs at their own pace. Significant lower dyspnoea (primary outcome), leg discomfort, minute ventilation and capillary blood lactate under the ECT condition were found, with no change in total task time. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT03564028.

Characteristics of Lower Limb Muscle Activity During Walking and Stair Climbing With Full Weight Bearing in Postoperative Ankle Fracture Patients.

Background Ankle fractures are among the most common lower limb fractures. Following surgery, the ankle is immobilized in a splint or cast for a specific period. Even after full weight bearing is allowed, daily activities, such as walking and stair climbing, may be affected by residual pain, limited joint range of motion (ROM), and muscle weakness. The present study aimed to investigate lower limb muscle activity during walking and stair climbing in patients capable of unassisted ambulation after ankle fracture surgery. Methods The study included 18 patients who underwent open osteosynthesis f
