Association between toe pressure strength in the standing position and postural control capability in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: A method has been developed to assess toe pressure strength in the standing position, taking into account concerns about toe grip strength. RESEARCH QUESTION: Which is more associated to postural control capability, the conventional toe grip strength or the newly devised toe pressure strength in the standing position, which is close to the actual movement? METHODS: This study is a cross-sectional study. This study included 67 healthy adults (mean age, 19 ± 1 years; 64% male). The postural control capability was measured using the center-of-pressure shift distance in the anterior-

Open stand-up MRI: a new instrument for positional neuroimaging.

We present a 40-year-old man referred with complaints of neck pain, left arm pain, headaches, paresthesias in the index and middle fingers, with numbness in the C7 nerve root distribution. Conventional recumbent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was read by the radiologist as a small protrusion at C5-C6 that did not correlate with his symptoms. The patient had exhausted his treatment options. He underwent MRI in a weight-bearing, upright position with extension that revealed a positional cervical disc protrusion on the left at C6-C7. The protrusion was causing a proximal left C6-C7 neural foram

Intramuscular Circulation of the Lumbar Multifidus in Different Trunk Positions on Standing.

A deficiency in lumbar muscle blood circulation is considered to be a major risk factor for non-specific low back pain. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in relative circulation over time in the lumbar multifidus in different positions on sitting.Twelve healthy subjects (7 males, 5 females, average age: 20.9 years) without low back pain for the past 12 months were recruited. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to non-invasively measure total haemoglobin (Total-Hb) and oxygenated haemoglobin (Oxy-Hb) in the lumbar multifidus at the L5-S1 segment. Subjects were asked to mov

Differences in cervical sagittal alignment between the standing and sitting positions.

BACKGROUND: Sagittal spinal alignment has mainly analyzed in the standing position. According to previous studies, there are significant differences in lumbopelvic alignment between the standing and sitting positions and cervical alignment is affected by lumbopelvic alignment. In this study, therefore, we hypothesized that cervical sagittal alignments are different between the standing and sitting positions. METHODS: A total of 108 patients with spinal degenerative diseases underwent whole spine radiography. Cervical lordosis (CL), C2-7 SVA, T1S, C7-S1 SVA, TK, LL, SS, PT, and PI were measure

American College of Sports Medicine position stand. Exercise and hypertension.

Hypertension (HTN), one of the most common medical disorders, is associated with an increased incidence of all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Lifestyle modifications are advocated for the prevention, treatment, and control of HTN, with exercise being an integral component. Exercise programs that primarily involve endurance activities prevent the development of HTN and lower blood pressure (BP) in adults with normal BP and those with HTN. The BP lowering effects of exercise are most pronounced in people with HTN who engage in endurance exercise with BP decreasing approximatel

How do different standing positions affect trunk muscle activation in LBP-developers during prolonged standing?

BACKGROUND: Low back pain developers (PDs) are individuals at a high risk of developing low back pain (LBP), especially during prolonged standing. Understanding their characteristics is essential for devising effective preventive strategies. Prolonged standing has been associated with increased co-contraction of trunk muscles and elevated activity of the trunk extensor muscles. This study aims to examine the effects of using a normalized footrest height and altering arm positions on muscle activity in PDs. METHODS: Twenty-four female PDs, identified by a > 10 mm increase on the visual analog

The impact of different standing positions on gluteus medius activation and lumbar lordosis in LBP-developers during prolonged standing.

Low back pain (LBP) development has been associated with increased hip muscle co-activation and lumbar lordosis during standing in previously asymptomatic individuals. It is commonly advised to use footrests to relieve LBP. The impact of adjusting arm position on lumbar biomechanics can also be impressive. This study aimed to compare the effects of normalized footrest height and changing arm position on Gluteus medius (GMed) muscle activity, lumbar lordosis, and pain intensity. Twenty-four female pain developers (PDs) were recruited, identified by a > 10 mm increase on the visual analog scale

Lumbar axial loading device alters lumbar sagittal alignment differently from upright standing position: a computed tomography study.

STUDY DESIGN: A study was performed using an axial loading device in healthy young subjects. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether sagittal alignment during axial loading using a compression device can accurately simulate the standing posture. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Axial compression devices are widely used for simulation of standing position during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans. However, images taken during axial loading have not been compared with those obtained in a standing posture. METHODS: The study population comprised 14 asymptomatic healthy volun

In vitro study of patellar position during sitting, standing from squatting, and the stance phase of walking.

Muscle balance in quadricep muscles is an important factor for patellar instability. However, in vivo, the activity of the quadriceps varies during knee motion. To simulate this clinical condition, different loading conditions of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis oblique at different knee flexion angles were studied, and patellar motion during knee extension was determined. Seven fresh-frozen adult cadaver knees were use. Patellar motion in terms of patellar shift, patellar tilt, and rotation were measured using a magnetic tracker system. The loads applied to each quadr

Characteristics of sagittal spinal alignment in Japanese elementary school students in standing position: focusing on thoracic hyperkyphosis.

Several reports have raised concerns about poor posture in children worldwide. As Japan began to experience rapid economic growth toward the end of the 20th century, poor posture (hyperkyphosis) in children became a particular problem. However, little research has been conducted on hyperkyphosis among Japanese elementary school students, and sample sizes have been inadequate. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of hyperkyphosis among Japanese elementary school students to help understand and prevent hyperkyphosis. A total of 403 Japanese elementary school students

Recovery of Spinal Walking in Paraplegic Dogs Using Physiotherapy and Supportive Devices to Maintain the Standing Position.

Paraplegic patients have always been ideal candidates for physiotherapy due to their body's inability to recover on its own. Regardless of the cause that led to the onset of paraplegia (traumatic or degenerative), physiotherapy helps these patients with devices and methods designed to restore the proper functioning of their motility, as well as their quality of life. A total of 60 paraplegic dogs without deep pain in the hindlimbs caused by intervertebral disc extrusion or thoracolumbar fractures underwent physiotherapy sessions: manual therapy (massage), electrostimulation (10-20 min with pos

Relationship Between Hallux Valgus Recurrence and Sesamoid Position on Anteroposterior Standing Radiographs After Distal Chevron Metatarsal Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Recurrence of the hallux valgus deformity has various causes, and the incomplete reduction of sesamoids may be one of the important issues. However, we have seen several patients with postoperative lateral sesamoid displacement on anteroposterior (AP) standing radiographs who did not experience hallux valgus recurrence. Therefore, we hypothesized that lateral displacement of the sesamoid on AP standing radiographs does not cause hallux valgus recurrence. METHODS: The study included 269 feet (185 patients) with hallux valgus treated with distal chevron metatarsal osteotomy. Mean pa
