Attention problems and executive functions in children with spina bifida and hydrocephalus.

This study addressed the incidence of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) subtypes in children with spina bifida meningomyelocele and shunted hydrocephalus (SBH) as well as differences in executive functions among these subtypes. Parent rating scales revealed that 31% of the group with SBH could be identified with AD/HD, mostly the Inattentive type (23%). The group with SBH differed from normal controls on cognitive measures of executive functions, but subtype differences were not significant. Multivariate tests showed that children with SBH were rated with greater difficulties on

The effect of intrauterine hypoxia on the child surviving to 4 years.

Intrauterine hypoxia/asphyxia is an unchallenged cause of perinatal death, but whether sublethal degrees of hypoxia result frequently in brain damage in surviving infants is less certain. To test this hypothesis, obstetric patients with abruptio placentae, placenta previa, and prolapse of the umbilical cord were computer matched on several factors with normal control patients to determine the degree of risk of lower 4 year Stanford-Binet I. Neuropsychological characteristics of children with the 22q11 Deletion Syndrome: a descriptive analysis.

Previous reports of cognitive functioning in children with the 22q11 Deletion Syndrome have reported marked variability in IQ and achievement subtest scores. Studies have begun to explore neuropsychological function in 22q11 DS however results are inconsistent and the profile incomplete. We assessed 40 children ages 5-12 with 22q11 DS. Consistent with past results, visual-spatial memory was significantly lower than verbal memory. Differentially lowered scores were found only in visual attention, working memory and motor function. Contrary with some past results quantitative, verbal ability, an

Associations of ethnicity and SES with IQ and achievement in spina bifida meningomyelocele.

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated whether the phenotypic pattern of higher verbal than nonverbal IQ in children with spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM) is consistent across subgroups differing in ethnicity and SES. We also explored the relation of cognitive and academic performance. METHODS: Non-Hispanic White (n = 153) and Hispanic (n = 80) children with SBM received the Stanford Binet Test of Intelligence-IV and achievement subtests of the Woodcock-Johnson. Parents completed questionnaires assessing the family environment [socioeconomic status (SES), resources, and educational opportunities]. RESU

Outcome of children prenatally exposed to cocaine and other drugs: a path analysis of three-year data.

OBJECTIVE: Cocaine and other drug use during pregnancy continues to be a major health concern. With increasing use of cocaine by women of childbearing age, large numbers of children have been exposed to this and other substances in utero. Currently, very little information regarding the long-term developmental implications of cocaine/polydrug exposure exists. The purpose of this study is to present 3-year cognitive and behavioral data on infants exposed to cocaine and other drugs during gestation. METHODS: The subjects and controls in this study are currently enrolled in a longitudinal, prosp

Cognitive function and event-related potentials in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus is associated with cognitive changes, but the extent of cognition decline depends on age at onset, duration of diabetes, and occurrence of attacks of hypoglycemia or ketoacidosis. This study was designed to assess cognitive function in a group of children with type 1 diabetes mellitus. A total of 40 diabetic children were recruited from the pediatric department of Assiut University Hospital, Egypt. Forty healthy children matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic status were chosen as controls for comparison. Cognition was assessed using Stanford-Binet and event-related p

Influence on psychological development of early treatment of congenital hypothyroidism detected by neonatal screening: a controlled study.

It has been shown that early diagnosis and treatment of congenital hypothyroidism based on neonatal screening will improve outcome. To test this hypothesis, we performed standard psychological tests (Gesell, Stanford-Binet, or Wechsler) in three groups of children with treated hypothyroidism: 14 were discovered by neonatal screening and 24 (15 with thyroid agenesis and 9 with ectopic thyroid) were diagnosed prior to institution of screening. Age (weeks) at initial treatment differed among the three groups (mean values +/- SE: screened 4.6 +/- 0.8, thyroid agenesis 19.3 +/- 4.0, ectopic thyroid

Immediate and long-term posttherapy neuropsychologic performance in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated without central nervous system radiation.

Intellectual and neuropsychologic test performance was studied in 41 children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia within one year of completing multidrug therapy in which intrathecal methotrexate was the sole agent of central nervous system prophylaxis. To control for possible effects of intensive systemic chemotherapy and the disruptive psychosocial effects of treatment on psychometric test function, 33 children with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma who had no CNS disease or treatment were similarly studied. All patients studied had been in continuous complete remission since diagnosis. Within each d

Cerebral palsy in Al-Quseir City, Egypt: prevalence, subtypes, and risk factors.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most frequent cause of motor handicap. The present door-to-door survey was conducted in Al-Quseir City, Egypt, to investigate the epidemiology of CP. All inhabitants were screened by three neurologists. Medical and neurological examinations were performed for all residents and suspected cases of CP were confirmed by meticulous neurological assessment, brain magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, and testing with the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. Forty-six of 12,788 children aged ≤18 years were found to have CP, yielding a childhood prevalence of 3.6

Dyslexia with and without Irlen syndrome: A study of influence on abilities and brain-derived neurotrophic factor level.

The presence of comorbid Irlen syndrome (IS) in children with developmental dyslexia (DD) may have an impact on their reading and cognitive abilities. Furthermore, the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was reported to be expressed in brain areas involved in cognitive and visual processing. The aim of this study was to evaluate some cognitive abilities of a group of dyslexic children with IS and to measure and compare the plasma BDNF level to dyslexic children without IS and neurotypical (NT) children. The participants were 60 children with DD (30 in the DD + IS group; 30 in the DD group

SYSTEMS: School-Years Screening Test for the Evaluation of Mental Status.

This paper introduces the School-Years Screening Test for Evaluation of Mental Status (SYSTEMS). It was designed to be used by neurologists, pediatricians, and other health professionals assessing children with suspected cognitive problems or changes. SYSTEMS was initially based on the adult Mini-Mental State Examination developed by Folstein, Folstein, and McHugh in 1975. SYSTEMS is a 7- to 12-minute, one-on-one interview test containing 46 items for use in children between 5 and 12 years of age. Although a full diagnosis cannot be made, the results do provide an indication of whether to send

Negative effects of paternal age on children's neurocognitive outcomes can be explained by maternal education and number of siblings.

BACKGROUND: Recent findings suggest advanced paternal age may be associated with impaired child outcomes, in particular, neurocognitive skills. Such patterns are worrisome given relatively universal trends in advanced countries toward delayed nuptiality and fertility. But nature and nurture are both important for child outcomes, and it is important to control for both when drawing inferences about either pathway. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We examined cross-sectional patterns in six developmental outcome measures among children in the U.S. Collaborative Perinatal Project (n = 31,346). Many of thes

Do nutrient supplements and dietary changes affect learning and emotional reactions of children with learning difficulties? A controlled series of 16 cases.

Detailed dietary and biochemical analyses were done on 16 consecutive cases of children aged 5-15 years referred for a combined remedial reading/behaviour modification program. Each child was given an individually designed vitamin and mineral supplement. Diets were also changed to reduce sugars and refined foods and toxic metals contamination. Cases were matched in pairs with 16 other cases on the program who were given no dietary changes but who received a one-a-day vitamin/mineral capsule as part of standard procedure at the clinic. Over 22 weeks on the program, the experimental group showed

A girl with tuberous sclerosis complex presenting with severe epilepsy and electrical status epilepticus during sleep, and with high-functioning autism and mutism.

Most patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) suffer from epilepsy, and many have cognitive and behavioral problems like severe intellectual disability, autism, and hyperactivity. Only rare patients with TSC and autism have a normal intelligence quotient. We report a 13-year-old girl with definite TSC who had early-onset severe epilepsy, autistic behavior, and moderate developmental delay. By school age, however, she had normal intelligence; her intelligence quotient was at least 70 based on a Stanford-Binet test that she refused to complete. She showed good reading, writing, and languag

Effects of central-nervous-system irradiation on neuropsychologic functioning of children with acute lymphocytic leukemia.

Two neuropsychologic studies were performed to determine the long-term effects of "prophylactic" cranial or craniospinal irradiation on the psychologic and neurologic functions of children with acute lymphocytic leukemia. In a prospective study, 34 patients with leukemia who received either craniospinal irradiation or cranial irradiation combined with intrathecal methotrexate were evaluated by standardized neurologic and psychologic examinations before and after irradiation. Their performance was compared with that of 27 controls who received irradiation to parts of the body other than the cra
