Staphylococcus lugdunensis prosthetic joint infection: A multicentric cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To describe Staphylococcus lugdunensis prosthetic joint infection (PJI) management and outcome. METHODS: Adults with proven S. lugdunensis PJI were included in a multicentric retrospective cohort. Determinants for failure were assessed by logistic regression and treatment failure-free survival curve analysis (Kaplan-Meier). RESULTS: One hundred and eleven patients were included (median age 72.4 [IQR, 62.7-79.4] years), with a knee (n = 71, 64.0%) or hip (n = 39, 35.1%) PJI considered as chronic in 77 (69.4%) cases. Surgical management consisted in debridement, antibiotic with imp

Staphylococcus lugdunensis: a Skin Commensal with Invasive Pathogenic Potential.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a species of coagulase-negative staphylococcus (CoNS) that causes serious infections in humans akin to those of S. aureus It was often misidentified as S. aureus, but this has been rectified by recent routine use of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) in diagnostic laboratories. It encodes a diverse array of virulence factors for adhesion, cytotoxicity, and innate immune evasion, but these are less diverse than those encoded by S. aureus It expresses an iron-regulated surface determinant (Isd) system combined

Sortase A promotes virulence in experimental Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a commensal of humans and an opportunistic pathogen. It can cause an aggressive form of infective endocarditis in healthy humans akin to Staphylococcus aureus. Here we compared the virulence of the genome-sequenced S. lugdunensis strain N920143 to S. aureus in an experimental rat endocarditis model. N920143 caused a milder course of disease with lower levels of bacteraemia and smaller endocardial vegetations than S. aureus strain Newman. However, vegetations were comparable to those produced by S. aureus MRSA strain COL. Little is known about virulence factors of

[Necrotising endocarditis of mitral valve due to Staphylococcus lugdunensis].

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an infrequent cause of infective endocarditis (IE) and usually involves native valves of the heart. It causes life-threatening events such as rupture of cardiac valve or cerebral or pulmonary embolism due to necrosis on the endocardial tissue involved by the bacteria. Antibiotic therapy without cardiac surgery or delayed cardiac surgery usually follows a fatal course in S. lugdunensis endocarditis. In this report the first case of S. lugdunensis endocarditis from Turkey was presented. A 37-year-old man was admitted to the emergency department with a 2-weeks histor

Clinical and microbiological properties of Staphylococcus lugdunensis skin infections.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is an emerging pathogen in skin and soft tissue infections that was previously considered a commensal. The aim of this study was to elucidate the characteristics of skin infections by S. lugdunensis and its appropriate management, in a tertiary referral medical center. The clinical files, bacterial cultures and histopathology reports of all S. lugdunensis isolates from skin infections over a period of 8 years (September 2009-September 2017) were reviewed. S. lugdunensis was isolated from 29 patients with skin infections, aged 7-89 years (mean 33.3 years). A state of

Staphylococcus lugdunensis abscesses complicating molluscum contagiosum in two children.

We report the occurrence of Staphylococcus lugdunensis abscesses in two girls with molluscum contagiosum who both required surgical intervention under general anaesthesia. S. lugdunensis is a coagulase-negative Staphylococcus recently recognized as an emerging human pathogen. Because of its ubiquitous nature and the high prevalence of molluscum contagiosum in children, it is likely that this as yet unreported association may be underestimated, thus raising the question as to whether bacterial culture of superinfected mollusca should be obtained more often.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis--the hidden peril of coagulase-negative staphylococcus in blood cultures.

Reported here is a successfully treated case of native mitral valve endocarditis caused by Staphylococcus lugdunensis and a review of 47 similar cases reported in the English literature. In the literature review, perineal skin flora appeared to be the source of the organism in patients with endocarditis. Staphylococcus lugdunensis is generally susceptible in vitro to beta-lactam agents. If speciation is not performed, these bacteria might be mistaken for Staphylococcus epidermidis, a relatively avirulent bacterium that is a common contaminant of cultures. Prompt speciation can lead to earlier

Echocardiogram identified several masses along the chordae tendineae, as well as a long the annulus of the mitral valve. A blood culture was positive for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis. The dog was also positive for Bartonella DNA on PCR testing. Aggressive antibiotic therapy was instituted. However, the dog continued to have recurrent pleural effusion and progressive azotemia. The dog was euthanized 39 days after diag

A case of Staphylococcus lugdunensis bacteremia complicated by reactive arthritis.

Reactive arthritis has been described infrequently in association with staphylococcal infections, both those secondary to Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci. We present a case of a 51-year-old male undergoing chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer who presented with joint pain and fevers and was found to have Staphylococcus lugdunensis bacteremia. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms were negative for endocarditis. Arthrocentesis from one large joint revealed culture-negative inflammatory synovitis. This case illustrates that a possible systemic manifestation o

A surgical case of mycotic aneurysm with Staphylococcus lugdunensis endocarditis.

A 74-year-old man with a history of mitral valve repair was referred to our hospital with fever and diagnosed with mitral valve endocarditis involving occlusion of the superior mesenteric artery. Bacterial cultures showed Staphylococcus lugdunensis. Despite antibiotic therapy, orthopnea ensued due to valve destruction. Emergency mitral valve replacement was performed. Computed tomography on postoperative day 10 revealed a rapidly expanding mycotic aneurysm of the superior mesenteric artery. Aneurysmectomy was undertaken. Mycotic aneurysms of the superior mesenteric artery have not been reporte

Characterization of haloacid dehalogenase superfamily acid phosphatase from Staphylococcus lugdunensis.

The haloacid dehalogenase superfamily implicated in bacterial pathogenesis comprises different enzymes having roles in many metabolic pathways. Staphylococcus lugdunensis, a Gram-positive bacterium, is an opportunistic human pathogen causing infections in the central nervous system, urinary tract, bones, peritoneum, systemic conditions and cutaneous infection. The haloacid dehalogenase superfamily proteins play a significant role in the pathogenicity of certain bacteria, facilitating invasion, survival, and proliferation within host cells. The genome of S. lugdunensis encodes more than ten pro

Staphylococcus lugdunensis cultured from the amniotic fluid at Caesarean Section.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis is a virulent coagulase-negative staphylococcus. It behaves like and can be mistaken in culture for Staphylococcus aureus. While originally thought to be a skin commensal rarely responsible for opportunistic infection, it was rapidly established as a significant human pathogen. It has been mainly associated with native and prosthetic valve endocarditis, osteomyelitis, and skin and soft tissue cellulitis, but has also been reported as a cause of fasciitis as well as peritonitis. Staphylococcus lugdunensis has been reported as a cause of endometritis but has not been p

Microbiological characteristics, presumptive identification, and antibiotic susceptibilities of Staphylococcus lugdunensis.

This study validated abbreviated methods for the presumptive identification of Staphylococcus lugdunensis and studied the antibiotic susceptibilities of 106 isolates. The combination of positive responses to ornithine and pyrrolidonyl arylamidase identified all S. lugdunensis isolates. Resistance to penicillin and methicillin was detected in 27 and 5% of isolates, respectively.

Staphylococcus lugdunensis Peritoneal Dialysis-Related Peritonitis: A Matched Comparative Analysis.

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Staphylococcus lugdunensis (S lugdunensis) is a coagulase-negative staphylococcus species that has been increasingly recognized to cause serious infections with virulence resembling Staphylococcus aureus (S aureus). No studies have evaluated the characteristics and outcomes of patients with S lugdunensis peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis compared with those with S aureus peritonitis. We aim to evaluate the clinical course of peritonitis as caused by these organisms. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective matched comparative analysis involving a single tertiary center from
