Connectivity at the human-wildlife interface: starling movements relate to carriage of E. coli.

Synanthropic bird species in human, poultry or livestock environments can increase the spread of pathogens and antibiotic-resistant bacteria between wild and domestic animals. We present the first telemetry-based spatial networks for a small songbird. We quantified landscape connectivity exerted by spotless starling movements, and aimed to determine if connectivity patterns were related to carriage of potential pathogens. We captured 28 starlings on a partridge farm in 2020 and tested them for Avian influenza virus, West Nile virus WNV, Avian orthoavulavirus 1, Coronavirus, Salmonella spp. and

Using geometric algebra to represent curvature in shell theory with applications to Starling resistors.

We present a novel application of rotors in geometric algebra to represent the change of curvature tensor that is used in shell theory as part of the constitutive law. We introduce a new decomposition of the change of curvature tensor, which has explicit terms for changes of curvature due to initial curvature combined with strain, and changes in rotation over the surface. We use this decomposition to perform a scaling analysis of the relative importance of bending and stretching in flexible tubes undergoing self-excited oscillations. These oscillations have relevance to the lung, in which it i

A sliding mode-based starling-like controller for implantable rotary blood pumps.

Clinically adequate implementation of physiological control of a rotary left ventricular assist device requires a sophisticated technique such as the recently proposed method based on the Frank-Starling mechanism. In this mechanism, the stroke volume of the heart increases in response to an increase in the volume of blood filling the left ventricle at the end of diastole. To emulate this process, changes in pump speed need to automatically regulate pump flow to ensure that the combined output of the left ventricle and pump match the output of the right ventricle across changing cardiovascular

Estimating the Starling equation parameters in living humans by using volume kinetic analysis.

The transcapillary filtration of fluid is governed by the Starling forces. The purpose of the present study was to simultaneously estimate all Starling parameters in living humans by using likelihood mathematics. First, the capillary filtration was estimated by volume kinetic analysis at 3,015 time points during 193 intravenous infusion experiments using crystalloid and colloid fluid in adult volunteers and surgical patients placed in the supine position. Second, the obtained capillary filtration and the measured plasma colloid osmotic pressure were entered into a new kinetic analysis to estim

Sex-Specific Yolk Allocation Revisited: A Test in Starlings and a Review of Evidence in Birds.

Maternal effects play a key role in shaping offspring phenotype variation in birds, particularly through the allocation of different substances into the egg yolk. Among these, androgens and antioxidants are essential for early development. These compounds may exert sex-specific effects, as male and female offspring often differ in their development even from very early phases of their ontogeny. It has been therefore hypothesized that females might strategically allocate different amounts of these yolk compounds depending on the sex of the embryo. To test this hypothesis, we conducted an observ

Modeling the impact of the revised starling hypothesis on vascular refilling during ultrafiltration in humans.

The physical attributes of continuous capillaries, the glycocalyx, and endothelial tight junctions, influence the distribution of forces that affect transcapillary solvent and solute transport. The traditional Starling hypothesis does not account for the effects of transcapillary solvent flux on the protein content of the pericapillary space, whereas the "Revised" Starling model (RSM) incorporates the impact of the glycocalyx and endothelial tight junctions on transcapillary solute flux, which results in an inhomogeneous distribution of oncotic pressures across the capillary wall. We compared

Timing of photorefractoriness in the European starling: significance of photoperiod early and late in the reproductive cycle.

In European starlings, as in many other birds inhabiting higher latitudes, gonads develop in response to the increasing daylengths in early spring. Later in the year, however, the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis becomes refractory to the previously stimulatory long photoperiods and the gonads regress in summer. The present study addresses the question of when during the gonadal growth phase photorefractoriness is determined. A 13-h photoperiod induces testicular development and subsequent testicular regression associated with refractoriness in male starlings. An 11-h photoperiod, in contras

The endothelial glycocalyx affords compatibility of Starling's principle and high cardiac interstitial albumin levels.

OBJECTIVE: To test the role of an oncotic pressure gradient across the endothelial glycocalyx with respect to extravasation of fluid and colloids and development of tissue edema in a whole organ setting. METHODS: We measured filtration in the intact coronary system of isolated guinea pig hearts, comparing colloid-free perfusion and perfusion with 1.67% albumin or 2% hydroxyethylstarch (oncotic pressures 5.30 vs. 11.10 mm Hg, respectively). Heparinase was used to alter the endothelial glycocalyx. RESULTS: Extremely high net organ hydraulic conductivity was obtained with colloid-free perfusion

Preload optimization using "starling curve" generation during shock resuscitation: can it be done?

Preload-directed resuscitation is the standard of care in U.S. trauma centers. As part of our standardized protocol for traumatic shock resuscitation, patients who do not respond to initial interventions of hemoglobin replacement and fluid volume loading have optimal preload determined using a standardized algorithm to generate a "Starling curve." We retrospectively analyzed data from 147 consecutive resuscitation protocol patients during the 24 months ending August 2002. Fifty (34%) of these patients required preload optimization, of which the optimization algorithm was completed in 36 (72%).

Do abnormal Starling forces cause fetal hydrops in red blood cell alloimmunization?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the current investigation was to ascertain whether derangements in umbilical venous pressure and plasma colloid osmotic pressure are involved in the pathophysiologic condition of immune hydrops fetalis. STUDY DESIGN: Umbilical venous pressure (corrected for ambient amniotic fluid pressure) and colloid osmotic pressure were measured during intravascular transfusion. Fetal hydrops was defined as the presence of ascites by ultrasonography. The Mann-Whitney test was used for comparison of groups; a value of p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Fif

Lack of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neuron response to decreasing photoperiod in thyroidectomized male starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

Exposure of starlings to long days initially causes reproductive maturation, but eventually leads to photorefractoriness. During photorefractoriness, gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) decreases in the GnRH cell bodies and fibers emanating from these to the median eminence, circulating gonadotrophin concentrations decrease to a minimum, and the gonads regress. Thyroidectomy profoundly affects these photoperiodic responses. In chronically thyroidectomized starlings, gonadal responses to changes in day length are attenuated. This investigation was conducted to determine whether, in the absen

Immunohistochemical demonstration of marked changes in the LHRH system of photosensitive and photorefractory European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

Immunocytochemistry was used to determine the effects of photoperiod on the LHRH neurosecretory system in the brain of male European starlings. In this species, as in other birds, reproduction is triggered by long daylengths but continued exposure leads to photorefractoriness and to a complete shut-down of the reproductive system. These effects are thought to be mediated through changes in the secretion of LHRH. In starlings exposed to a photoperiod of 11 h light:13 h darkness (11L:13D) and with fully developed testes there was strong immunostaining of both LHRH perikarya (n = 522 +/- 43 S.E.M

Phenotypic flexibility in metabolic adjustments and digestive function in white-shouldered starlings: responses to short-term temperature acclimation.

Changing the intrinsic rate of metabolic heat production is the main adaptive strategy for small birds to cope with different ambient temperatures. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that the small passerine the white-shouldered starling (Sturnus sinensis) can modulate basal metabolism under temperature acclimation by changing the morphological, physiological and biochemical state of its tissues and organs. We measured the effects of temperature on body mass, basal metabolic rate (BMR), wet mass of various internal organs, state 4 respiration (S4R) and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) activity

Description of two new Isospora species causing visceral coccidiosis in captive superb glossy starlings, Lamprotornis superbus (Aves: Sturnidae).

Isospora greineri sp. n. and Isospora superbusi sp. n. are described from captive superb glossy starlings, Lamprotornis superbus, from the Toronto Zoo succumbing to visceral coccidiosis. Sequence data from nuclear 18S recombinant DNA (rDNA) and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) loci from sporulated oocysts and infected tissues (liver, lung, or spleen) demonstrated two distinct Isospora sp. genotypes that varied in their relative abundance. In the tissues of one affected bird, as well as its associated fecal sample, two distinct COI sequences (1.7% divergence) and two distinct

Bayliss Starling Prize Lecture 2023: Neuropeptide-Y being 'unsympathetic' to the broken hearted.

William Bayliss and Ernest Starling are not only famous as pioneers in cardiovascular physiology, but also responsible for the discovery of the first hormone (from the Greek 'excite or arouse'), the intestinal signalling molecule and neuropeptide secretin in 1902. Our research group focuses on neuropeptides and neuromodulators that influence cardiovascular autonomic control as potential biomarkers in disease and tractable targets for therapeutic intervention. Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and chronic heart failure (CHF) result in high levels of cardiac sympathetic stimulation, which is a p

First report on Cryptococcus laurentii associated with feather loss in a glossy starling (Lamprotornis chalybaeus).

Although Cryptococcus laurentii has been isolated from fresh droppings and cloaca samples from feral pigeons, it has never before been associated with an actual disease condition in birds. This case study deals with the first report on C. laurentii associated with feather loss in a glossy starling (Lamprotornis chalybaeus). The bird exhibited patchy feather loss, especially around the back and beak area, and greyish crusts sticking quite firmly to the underlying skin. The feathers had a greasy appearance and disseminated a musty odour. Treatment was installed with fluconazole in the drinking w

Recovery of the Frank-Starling mechanism by coenzyme Q10 in patients with load-induced contractility depression.

Load-induced contractility depression, in which supernormal left ventricular ejection fraction and contractility at rest decrease by added afterload, is most often found in children with mitral valve prolapse who have symptoms. Patients have high ventricular end-diastolic pressure at rest, which is further increased by afterload challenge. The Frank-Starling mechanism may be maximally mobilized with high preload even at rest to compensate for the intrinsically depressed inotropic state. Therefore, preload reserve may be easily exhausted due to afterload addition. We aimed to determine left ven

The effect of haemorrhage on the cell populations of the thymus and bone marrow in wild starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

Following the withdrawal of blood from the brachial vein of adult wild starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) changes in the cell populations within the bone marrow and thymus were observed over an eight day period. The packed cell volume, haemoglobin content and reticulocyte count of the peripheral blood was determined before and after haemorrhage. The maximum effect of the haemorrhage was observed in the bone marrow after four days when the population of small lymphocytes, and basophilic erythroid precursors were reduced to less than 1%. At the same time the percentage of another line of erythroid cel

Artificial rain and cold wind act as stressors to captive molting and non-molting European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).

Free-roaming animals continually cope with changes in their environment. One of the most unpredictable environmental phenomena is weather. Being able to respond to weather appropriately is crucial as it can be a threat to survival. The stress response, consisting of increases in heart rate and release of glucocorticoids, is an important mechanism by which animals cope with stressors. This study examined behavioral, heart rate, and corticosterone responses of captive European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) to two aspects of weather mimicked under controlled conditions, a subtle (3 °C) decrease in
