Pancreatitis and Systemic Coronavirus Infection in a Ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

A 1-y-old spayed female ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was referred for additional diagnostic evaluation after physical examination by the referring veterinarian revealed a cranial abdominal mass. The ferret had a 2-wk history of inappetence, weight loss, and lethargy. On presentation, the ferret was thin, and an approximately 3-cm mass was palpable in the cranial abdomen. No other abnormalities were noted. Abdominal ultrasonography confirmed the presence of a soft-tissue structure, with a moderate blood supply and mesenteric lymphadenopathy. Fine-needle aspirates of the mass were nondiagnosti

Lipid emboli in a Vietnamese potbellied pig (Sus scrofa).

A 2-year-old, spayed female Vietnamese potbellied pig (Sus scrofa) was evaluated due to polyuria, polydipsia, lethargy, and hyporexia. The pig was obese, and a large abdominal mass was palpated. Additional findings included hypercalcemia, hyperglycemia, glucosuria, and an inflammatory leukogram. At surgery, the abdominal mass was biopsied and found to be bilaterally symmetric adipose tissue with mineralization and granulomatous steatitis. An additional surgery was performed to collect additional diagnostic samples, but the pig died while recovering from anesthesia. A cosmetic necropsy was perf

Valproate-induced hepatic steatogenesis in rats.

The administration of high-dose valproic acid (VPA) (750 mg per kg) consistently produced significant microvesicular steatosis in mature Sprague-Dawley rats after 48 hr. Similar changes occurred in animals pretreated with phenobarbital which received a lower dose of VPA (350 mg per kg), but no steatosis was seen in animals treated with the low-dose VPA alone. The steatogenic effect of VPA is most likely mediated by a toxic metabolite. It can also be speculated that phenobarbital, by enhancing the inducing effects of the hepatic mixed-function oxidase system, may lead to increased conversion of

Ultrasonographic Appearance of Acute Prostatitis and Prostatic Abscesses in Dogs.

Prostatitis is one of the most common prostatic disorders in dogs, although its ultrasonographic features remain poorly characterized. The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the ultrasonographic findings of canine prostatitis and prostatic abscessation and to investigate their association with clinical and laboratory abnormalities. Medical records of 35 client-owned dogs with cytologically or histologically confirmed acute prostatitis were reviewed. Clinical, ultrasonographic, laboratory, bacteriological, treatment, and follow-up data were collected. The most common ultrasonograph

Status of Infectious Diseases in Free-Ranging European Brown Hares (Lepus europaeus) Found Dead between 2017 and 2020 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

The European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) is a quite adaptable species, but populations have been decreasing for several decades in different countries, including Germany. To investigate infectious diseases as possible influences on observed population decline in the German federal state Schleswig-Holstein, 118 deceased free-ranging European brown hares were collected between 2017 and 2020 and underwent detailed postmortem examination with extended sampling. Infectious diseases were a major cause of death (34.7%). The number of juveniles found exceeded the adult ones. The main pathomorphologic

Pathogenicity of the bacterium New Zealand rickettsia-like organism (NZ-RLO2) in Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha smolt.

Farmed New Zealand Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha Walbaum have been found to be infected by rickettsia-like organisms (NZ-RLO). While these Gram-negative intra-cellular bacteria are closely related to Piscirickettsia salmonis, a significant pathogen for farmed salmon globally, the pathogenicity of NZ-RLO is unknown. The aim of the present study was to determine if one strain, NZ-RLO2, causes disease in Chinook salmon. Post-smolt salmon were inoculated with NZ-RLO2 by intraperitoneal injection at high, medium and low doses and observed for 30 d. All fish in the high and medium dosed gr

B-Mode and Contrast Enhanced Ultrasonography Features of Gastric Inflammatory and Neoplastic Diseases in Dogs.

Canine gastric disorders are common in veterinary clinical practice and among these neoplasms require rapid identification and characterization. Standard ultrasound (US) is the imaging modality of choice for gastric wall assessment. The aim of this prospective study is to describe the specific B-mode and contrast enhanced US (CEUS) features of normal, inflammatory, and neoplastic gastric wall in dogs. B-mode US and CEUS of the stomach were performed in anesthetized dogs with or without gastric disorders. Gastric wall qualitative and quantitative parameters were evaluated on B-mode US and CEUS

Feline pansteatitis: a report of five cases.

Pansteatitis (yellow fat disease, panniculitis, steatitis) is an inflammatory disease of adipose tissue throughout the body (Holzworth 1987). It was first experimentally induced by Mason & Dam in 1946 in cats fed a diet deficient in vita-min E and high in cod liver oil (Mason & Dam 1946). It has since been reported as a clinical condition by several authors (Cordy & Stil-linger 1953, Watson et al 1973, Gaskell et al 1975, Summers et al 1982, Hagiwara et al 1986). Pansteatitis occurs naturally in cats, mink, and pigs as a result of vitamin E deficiency. Vitamin E (α-tocopherol) is a biological

Concentration-dependent Toxicity after Subcutaneous Administration of Meloxicam to C57BL/6N Mice (Mus musculus).

Studies using the Mouse Grimace Scale have shown that for many NSAID, including meloxicam, minimal doses of at least 20 mg/kg may be necessary to achieve adequate peri- and post-operative analgesia in mice. However, more data are needed to determine whether such NSAID doses exceed the threshold for gastrointestinal ulceration or induce other relevant pathology. We administered equal volumes of saline or injectable meloxicam (1 or 5 mg/mL) at a dose of 20 mg/kg SC to 20 young adult male and female C57BL/6N mice daily for 6 d and performed necropsies on all mice on the seventh day. Ultrasonographic Features and Associated Clinical Findings in 21 Dogs With Histologically Confirmed Abscessed and Non-Abscessed Splenitis.

Splenitis, both with and without abscess formation, is an uncommon and potentially life-threatening diagnosis in dogs, occurring either as an isolated condition or secondary to other systemic inflammatory/infectious diseases. This retrospective descriptive study describes the ultrasonographic features of histopathologically confirmed splenitis in 21 dogs, including 12 cases of abscessed splenitis and 9 cases of non-abscessed splenitis (7 neutrophilic and 2 fibrinous-suppurative). Clinical signs were variable, most frequently including lethargy, anorexia or hyporexia, and vomiting; fewer dogs p

Pathomorphological Findings and Infectious Diseases in Selected European Brown Hare (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778) Populations from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

In the northernmost German federal state Schleswig-Holstein, populations of European brown hares (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778) show diverse densities and varying courses over the years. To examine differences in pathomorphological findings and infectious diseases as possible reasons for varying population dynamics, we assessed 155 hunted hares from three locations in Schleswig-Holstein from 2016 to 2020. We investigated the association of location, year, age, and sex of animals to certain pathomorphological findings and infectious diseases. Frequent pathomorphological findings were intestinal

A sequential study of pathological findings in Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus (L), throughout one year after an acute outbreak of viral encephalopathy and retinopathy.

Following a natural outbreak of viral encephalopathy and retinopathy (VER) at a commercial farm in Norway, surviving Atlantic halibut, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, were sequentially studied for distribution of nodavirus, immune response and histopathology over 1 year. Typical clinical signs and histopathology of VER were observed during the acute stage of the disease. Most of the surviving fish became subclinical carriers of nodavirus with clusters of nodavirus-containing cells in the central nervous system. Four random samplings of presumably healthy fish were performed from two fish groups, wi

Lipid-Related Lesions in Quaker Parrots ( Myiopsitta monachus).

The Quaker parrot has been used as a psittacine model to study clinical lipidology and lipid-related disorders. However, while Quaker parrots appear to be anecdotally susceptible to a variety of spontaneous dyslipidemic disorders and lesions caused by excess lipid accumulation, epidemiologic data are lacking. A multicenter retrospective study on 652 pathology submissions (411 necropsies and 243 biopsies) from Quaker parrots was performed by recording the final pathological diagnoses, age, and sex for each bird. The prevalence of lesions associated with lipid metabolism, such as hepatic lipidos

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasonography of Orbital and Intraocular Pathologies in 24 Dogs and 6 Cats.

OBJECTIVE: Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) is a noninvasive and relatively safe imaging technique to assess ocular perfusion, showing high sensitivity and specificity for tumor characterization in human oncology, while reports on its application in canine and feline diseased eyes are limited. This study aimed to describe the CEUS features of orbital and intraocular pathologies in dogs and cats in order to evaluate its diagnostic value in detecting and characterizing various lesions. ANIMAL STUDIED: CEUS examinations of 30 animals (24 dogs, 6 cats) were evaluated retrospectively. PRO

Idiopathic sterile inflammation of the epidural fat and epaxial muscles causing paraplegia in a mixed-breed dog.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 4-year-old sexually intact male mixed-breed dog was evaluated because of clinical signs of acute-onset pelvic limb ataxia, rapidly progressing to paraplegia with severe spinal hyperesthesia. CLINICAL FINDINGS: General physical examination revealed pyrexia, tachycardia, and tachypnea. Neurologic examination demonstrated severe spinal hyperesthesia and paraplegia with decreased nociception. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed extradural spinal cord compression at T13-L1 and hyperintense lesions on T1- and T2-weighted images in the epaxial musculature and epidural space. TRE

Multifocal Hepatocellular Carcinoma in a Malayan Wreathed Hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus).

A 30-year-old female intact Malayan wreathed hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus) was presented for presumed nesting behavior, progressive anorexia, dropping food, and coelomic distension. A complete blood count and plasma biochemistry analysis revealed marked inflammation, severe electrolyte abnormalities, elevated liver enzyme activities and bile acids, and normal plasma iron concentrations. Radiographic images of the patient were consistent with hepatomegaly and loss of serosal detail in the coelomic cavity. A computed tomography study revealed multiple poorly contrast-enhancing hepatic nodules,

Next generation sequencing and RNA-seq characterization of adipose tissue in the Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) in South Africa: Possible mechanism(s) of pathogenesis and pathophysiology of pansteatitis.

BACKGROUND: Concerted efforts to identify the pathogenesis and mechanism(s) involved in pansteatitis, (a generalized inflammation of the adipose tissue), that was attributed to the recent crocodile die off in the Olifants River and Loskop Dam in Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga, South Africa have been in the forefront of research in recent time. As part of the efforts, molecular characterization of healthy and pansteatitis adipose tissue was carried out by RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and de novo assembly of the adipose transcriptome, followed by differential

Predictive Blood Chemistry Parameters for Pansteatitis-Affected Mozambique Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus).

One of the largest river systems in South Africa, the Olifants River, has experienced significant changes in water quality due to anthropogenic activities. Since 2005, there have been various "outbreaks" of the inflammatory disease pansteatitis in several vertebrate species. Large-scale pansteatitis-related mortality events have decimated the crocodile population at Lake Loskop and decreased the population at Kruger National Park. Most pansteatitis-related diagnoses within the region are conducted post-mortem by either gross pathology or histology. The application of a non-lethal approach to a
