An exploratory pre-post study of an intensive somatosensory activity-based intervention on participation-related goals, motor performance and somatosensory function in children with unilateral cerebral palsy.

Somatosensory impairments are common in children with unilateral cerebral palsy and may be associated with limitations in upper-limb function and daily activities. The aim of this exploratory single-arm pre-post study was to examine pre-post change following a novel intensive somatosensory activity-based intervention (ISABI) targeting the more-affected upper limb, focusing on goal-related occupational performance (primary outcome), upper-limb motor performance, and somatosensory function. Sixteen children aged 6-15 years completed 36 h of intervention over three weeks (30 h clinic-based and 6

Problems with interhemispheric transfer of information in complete or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the presence of poor interhemispheric communication in agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and hydrocephalus. METHODS: With specially designed tests, nine children with ACC were investigated and compared with 11 controls to see the degree of impairment present. Two subjects with a stretched corpus callosum due to hydrocephalus also were tested. A subject with the corpus callosum divided was tested for comparison. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in tests of coordination and stereognosis both with ACC patients and the callosotomy subject. No impairments wer

[Functional value of the hand after digital replantation (author's transl)].

The absolute and relative indications and contraindications of fingerreplantation are exposed. The function of the replanted fingers depends on the level of amputation, the bone-joint and tendon lesions and the presence of protective sensibility. The range of joint movement of the replanted fingers is related to the amputation wound. The residual motion depends also on the level of amputation giving better results as the amputation is more distally situated. Limited range of movement in multiple amputations is not an obstacle to a useful grasp and pinch, which results in a more or less functio

Astereognosis as a presenting symptom in cervical meningioma.

Three unusual cases with astereognosis caused by cervical meningioma are presented. Astereognosis of subcortical origin has been reported several times. According to these reports, the causative lesion was confined to the area extending between the lower brain stem and the fourth cervical vertebra, thus suggesting that a sensory centre for stereognosis could be confined within these well defined anatomical limits, and that therefore a lesion in this area could lead to astereognosis. It is assumed in this paper that the lesion involves the sensory system of the Nucleus Cervicalis Lateralis. Fib

Isolated post-traumatic astereognosis: a case-based review.

INTRODUCTION: Astereognosis is the tactile inability to recognize objects placed in the palms by touch with the eyes closed or blind-folded in the presence of intact primary sensory modalities. Stereognosis is usually considered a function of the contralateral sensory cerebral cortex. However, lesions of several anatomic areas and pathologic entities have been reported to be associated with astereognosis. Only two previous reports linked traumatic injury to isolated astereognosis: following surgical evacuation of traumatic parietal extradural hematoma and following bullet injury in the neck in

Haptic perception of texture gradients.

To pick up 3-D aspects of pictures is arguably the most difficult problem concerning tactile pictorial perception by the blind. The aim of the experiments reported was to examine the potential utility of texture gradients in this context. Since there is no theoretical basis for predicting absolute values of 3-D properties from 2-D patterns read by the finger pads, the abilities of participants to perceive gradients lying between known maxima and minima were assessed. Experiment 1 involved blindfolded sighted participants making verbal magnitude estimations of texture-gradient magnitudes corres

Comparative tactile sensitivity of the fingertip and apical tongue using complex and pure tactile tasks.

Both the tongue and fingertip are highly tactile tissues relevant in texture perception, but work comparing relative sensitivity to elucidate potential differences in stimulus processing is limited. Presently, the acuity of the tongue and fingertip were compared using a series of tactile acuity tasks. We hypothesized the tongue would show superior acuity regardless of stimuli due to an absent epidermal barrier and its involvement in many high-sensitivity behaviors (e.g. eating, speaking). Acuity was determined using three different tests, two "purely-tactile" just noticeable difference (JND) t

Influence of palatal coverage on oral function - oral stereognostic ability and masticatory efficiency.

PURPOSE: Oral sensorimotor function performs an important role in mastication. This study investigated the influence of wearing experimental palatal plates on masticatory efficiency and oral stereognostic ability (OSA), and the relationship between these two functions. METHODS: Fifteen young adults with healthy dentitions (mean age, 26.4 years) participated in this study. Masticatory efficiency was determined using a sieving method and OSA test was conducted by 12 shaped forms. These tests were performed in random order under three different conditions: control (without experimental plate), P

Stereopsis in normal domestic cat, Siamese cat, and cat raised with alternating monocular occlusion.

Normal cats, cats raised with alternating monocular occluders, and Siamese cats were tested for stereoscopic vision using a shadow-casting technique that produced line stereograms. Human subjects were tested with the same apparatus. 1. Normal cats had stereoscopic vision, but AO and Siamese cats did not. 2. Normal AO cats, and Siamese cats all had equal visual activity (about 6 feet of arc) and all could make accurate judgments about the depth of real objects. 3. Normal cats could fuse crossed disparities as great as 50 feet of arc and uncrossed disparities as great as 30 feet of arc. 4. Norma

Complex haptic hallucinations and palinaptia.

A patient with biparietal lesions demonstrated complex stereognostic hallucinations and recurrent haptic sensations. Although there was complete astereognosis and palpatory apraxia, she palpated the hallucinated objects appropriately. A second patient with ictal haptic hallucinations is described, and the one case previously reported in the literature. Some observations and speculations are made concerning these rare phenomena.

Preliminary quantitative studies of prehension in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

Squirrel monkeys were filmed in the act of prehending objects of various sizes, shapes, and states of motion. Subsequent three-dimensional analyses indicated that general aspects of prehension do not vary grossly across individuals nor as a function of the object to be prehended, at least at the level of measurement used in these studies. The monkeys exhibited only whole-hand control, even with small or moving objects. However, in comparison with stationary objects, moving objects did elicit variations of arm and hand positions, and were associated with higher frequencies of blinking than nonm

Relationship between oral hygiene state and levels of oral sensory perception and motor ability.

It has been postulated that subjects with high levels of oral sensory perception and motor ability are able to achieve higher standards of oral hygiene even under different dietary regimes. In this study, eleven dental personnel volunteers were started on a low-sucrose diet for one week, followed by a high-sucrose diet for another week, while eleven others followed a reverse-order dietary regime. Oral sensory perception and motor ability were assessed by the oral stereognosis test and a test for oral motor ability. There was a greater trend for subjects to have more plaque on their teeth when

Sensory recovery of myomucosal flap oral cavity reconstructions.

BACKGROUND: Sensory restoration of the oral cavity is a primary aim of reconstructive surgery in posttraumatic or postablative defects. Sensitivity plays a key role in oral function, whose impairment strongly affects the patient's quality of life. Cheek myomucosal flaps provide a reliable and tissue-like reconstruction of these regions but their sensitive recovery, which we still know little about, deserves thorough assessment. METHODS: In this retrospective study, the myomucosal cheek flaps were tested for different aspects of sensory recovery: touch; 2-point discrimination; pain; sharp/smoo

A Protocol for Evaluation and Rehabilitation of Distal Radius Fractures Using Sensorimotor Input: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Proprioception and sensorimotor input are used to treat neurological and joint injuries. Following distal radius fractures (DRF) there is a temporary loss of proprioception that should be addressed. We created a protocol for evaluation, and a treatment plan following wrist surgery that is based on proprioceptive and sensorimotor input. We describe a series of patients undergoing surgery for DRF that were evaluated and treated with these protocols. METHODS: Both evaluation and treatment protocols included comprehensive sensorimotor procedures performed with eyes open and closed. Th

Age-related changes in oral sensation.

Oral sensation (including two-point discrimination, oral stereognosis, vibrotactile detection, somesthetic sensitivity, proprioception, and thermal sensitivity) was studied in 60 healthy adults in five age categories: 20 to 34, 35 to 49, 50 to 64, 65 to 79, and 80 years and above. Thermal and somesthetic sensitivity as well as proprioception did not change with age. Ability to differentiate tactile and vibratory sensation on the lip decreased after age 80 (P less than .01), but vibration detection on the soft palate did not change. Stereognostic ability remained good up to age 80, and then dec

Appliances for treatment of oral sensori--motor disorders.

Cerebral palsied children with predominant oral sensori-motor disorders were treated with functional appliances. Clinical experience with the coordination and the synchronization of interdependent functional chains is reported. Reasonable therapeutic success in control of drooling, masticatory and swallowing defects as well as of perioral dysfunction, dysphonia and dysarticulation suggests a wider use of such functional methods.

No significant links between somatognosia, stereognosia, and hypermobility: sensory processing unlikely to drive common complaints in hypermobile population.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated impaired proprioception and poorer responses to tactile deep pressure, visual-tactile integration, and vestibular stimuli in individuals with generalized hypermobility, potentially leading to sensory processing issues. Therefore, we aimed to explore the influence of hypermobility on somatognosia and stereognosia. METHODS: Forty-six participants were assessed using the Beighton score and categorized into three groups: non-hypermobile (n = 20), symptomatic hypermobile (n = 13), and asymptomatic hypermobile (n = 13).
