Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress damage are hallmarks of osteoarthritis (OA). Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-derived exosomes are important in intercellular mitochondria communication. However, the use of MSC exosomes for regulating mitochondrial function in OA has not been reported. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic effect of MSC exosomes in a three dimensional (3D) printed scaffold for early OA therapeutics. Methods: We first examined the mitochondria-related proteins in normal and OA human cartilage samples and investigated whether MSC exosomes could enhance mitochondri

Stereolithography is now widely used in tissue engineering since it allows fine-tuning of geometry and mechanical properties to mimic the topography of tissues. However, most published studies do not detail the optimization protocols that have been used to obtain these structures. Here, we developed a generic process to print photosensitive biomaterial formulations by stereolithography to obtain a specific topography. Using the small intestine architecture as a model combining filled villi and hollow crypts, we identify key parameters that govern both printing resolution and cellular behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Nasoalveolar molding (NAM) is a presurgical orthopedic treatment modality that attempts to reorient misaligned bony and soft tissue structures in patients with clefting of the lip and palate. The NAM devices are implemented prior to surgical intervention in order to minimize the gap across the cleft and thereby reduce tension across the eventual repair. Currently, NAM devices are fabricated in a laboratory and then refined chairside by the provider. The present article describes the potential of three-dimensional (3D) printing and computer-aided design (CAD) software for the fabr

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional echocardiography can allow us to address uniquely three-dimensional scientific questions, for example, the hypothesis that the impact of a stenotic valve depends not only on its limiting orifice area but also on its three-dimensional geometry proximal to the orifice. This can affect the coefficient of orifice contraction (Cc = effective/anatomic area), which is important because for a given flow rate and anatomic area, a lower Cc gives a higher velocity and pressure gradient, and Cc, routinely assumed constant in the Gorlin equation, may vary with valve shape (60%

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a rapidly growing field in industry. AM technologies include sintering, melting, and stereolithography. With steadily rising utilization, evaluating the environmental impact of AM materials has become essential, as these materials may act as emerging pollutants. Photopolymerizing resins (PRs) used in stereolithography can enter terrestrial ecosystems in polymerized and unpolymerized forms due to improper disposal. Insects are likely to be among the first organisms exposed to these contaminants in land ecosystems. This study evaluates t

The aim of this study was to evaluate stereolithography as a tool in craniofacial surgery. The indications were classified according to the usefulness of stereolithography for different craniofacial pathologies. Stereolithography models of 21 patients were built; in three cases two models were made. The age of the 7 male and 14 female patients was 17 years on average (range: 15 months-44 years). First a helical volume CT scan of the anatomical region was performed. After transformation of the data set, the models were built by an SLA 250 stereolithography apparatus (3D-Systems, Valencia, Calif

Stereolithography (SLA), a rapid prototyping technique, was introduced in 1991 at the Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery in Vienna and was adapted, in cooperation with the company Laserform, for our clinical requirements. As a refinement to physical models milled out of polyurethane, which had been used since 1989, this technique offered new applications for preoperative planning in craniomaxillofacial surgery. The proportions of these 3D models correspond 1:1 to the patients dimensions, with a possible accuracy of 0.25 mm. Since 1992 stereolithography has been used in 124 cases, primarily in tr

Light-based three-dimensional (3D) printing has been under use extensively to fabricate complex geometrical constructs which find a vast application in the fields of drug delivery and tissue engineering fields due to its ability to recapitulate the intricate biological architecture and thus provides avenues to achieve previously unachievable biomedical devices. The inherent problem associated with light-based 3D printing (from a biomedical perspective) is that of light scattering causing inaccurate and defective prints which results in erroneous drug loading in 3D printed dosage forms and can

Functionalized phases can effectively increase the mechanical properties of nanocomposites through interfacial bonding. This work demonstrates masked stereolithography (mSLA) of biopolymer-based nanocomposites and the improvement of their mechanical properties by the functionalization of both polymer matrix and nanoparticles with methacrylate groups. 3D printable nanocomposite inks were prepared from plant-derived acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO), polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA), and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA). Both AESO and nHA were further functionalized with additional methacry

The intestine is a complex tissue with a characteristic three-dimensional (3D) crypt-villus architecture, which plays a key role in the intestinal function. This function is also regulated by the intestinal stroma that actively supports the intestinal epithelium, maintaining the homeostasis of the tissue. Efforts to account for the 3D complex structure of the intestinal tissue have been focused mainly in mimicking the epithelial barrier, while solutions to include the stromal compartment are scarce and unpractical to be used in routine experiments. Here we demonstrate that by employing an opti

OBJECTIVE: Resection of large intraosseous sphenoid wing meningiomas is traditionally associated with significant morbidity. Rapid prototyping techniques have become widely used for treatment planning. Yet, the transfer of a treatment plan into the intraoperative situs strongly depends on the experience of the individual surgeon.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: Extensive resection with orbital decompression was planned and performed on the basis of rapid prototyping and surgical navigation techniques in a 44-year-old woman presenting with a large sphenoid wing meningioma on the right infiltrating the
