Plasma cortisol and faecal cortisol metabolites concentrations in stereotypic and non-stereotypic horses: do stereotypic horses cope better with poor environmental conditions?

BACKGROUND: Stereotypic behaviours, i.e. repetitive behaviours induced by frustration, repeated attempts to cope and/or brain dysfunction, are intriguing as they occur in a variety of domestic and captive species without any clear adaptive function. Among the different hypotheses, the coping hypothesis predicts that stereotypic behaviours provide a way for animals in unfavourable environmental conditions to adjust. As such, they are expected to have a lower physiological stress level (glucocorticoids) than non-stereotypic animals. Attempts to link stereotypic behaviours with glucocorticoids ho

Stereotyped and non-stereotyped features of the temporal patterning of singing sessions in the ovenbird Seiurus auricapillus.

Temporal patterning of recorded singing sessions of 26 different male ovenbirds Seiurus auricapillus (Fringillidae: Parulini) was analyzed computationally, in order to test whether differences among songs are potentially informative or merely reflect performance errors. Repeated songs within a singing session by a given male showed relatively little inter-individual variation in the duration of the song or in the number of units composing it, although these features varied substantially among individuals. On the other hand, within a session of singing by an individual male, the most variable a

Psychological essentialism and attention allocation: preferences for stereotype-consistent versus stereotype-inconsistent information.

People who believe that human attributes are immutable (entity theorists) display preferences for stereotype-consistent over stereotype-inconsistent information (J. E. Plaks, S. J. Stroessner, C. S. Dweck, & J. W. Sherman, 2001). In this article, the authors argue that entity theories are components of broader sets of beliefs that represent differences between people in terms of underlying essences. Consistent with expectations, the authors found that measures of essentialist beliefs (i.e., in the biological basis, discreteness, informativeness, and inherence of human attributes) covaried with

Stereotypic behaviors in mice selectively bred for high and low methamphetamine-induced stereotypic chewing.

RATIONALE: At high doses, methamphetamine produces repetitive stereotypic behaviors, and the degree to which this occurs is heritable. OBJECTIVES: Mice of a B6D2F2 genetic background were selectively bred for four generations for high (HMA) and low (LMA) numbers of stereotyped chewing episodes measured for 1 min at 33 min post-injection following 10 mg/kg methamphetamine (changed to 7 mg/kg for the high line and 15 mg/kg for the low line in the third selected generation to avoid ceiling and floor effects, respectively). We sought to determine whether stereotypic behaviors other than number of

Subtyping stereotypic behavior in children: the association between stereotypic behavior, mood, and heart rate.

The stereotypic behavior of children (N = 26) while in a playroom session with their parent was studied. The sample included children with a pervasive developmental disorder, an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, a developmental expressive language disorder, or a developmental receptive language disorder and normally developing children. Stereotypic behaviors associated with distress, elation, and composure were compared on mean duration and form of the stereotypies and heart rate changes around the onset of the stereotypies. Results showed that stereotypies associated with different mo

Why most stereotypes are negative.

Stereotypes are a foundational construct in psychological science, often defined as beliefs concerning characteristic group attributes. We present a cognitive-ecological theory of social perception that predicts and explains why such characteristic attributes are likely negative, that is, why most stereotypes are negative. The theory assumes that, cognitively, people characterize groups by attributes that distinguish them from other groups. Ecologically, positive social information is more frequent (i.e., positivity prevalence), and negative social information is more diverse (i.e., negativity

The directed nature of social stereotypes.

Stereotypes are strategically complex. We propose that people hold not just stereotypes about what groups are generally like (e.g., "men are competitive") but stereotypes about how groups behave toward specific groups (e.g., "men are competitive toward")-what we call directed stereotypes. Across studies, we find that perceivers indeed hold directed stereotypes. Four studies examine directed stereotypes of sex and age (Studies 1 and 2; N = 541) and of race/ethnicity (of Asian/Black/Latino/White Americans; Studies 3 and 4; N = 769), with a focus on stereotypes of competitiveness, aggressiveness,

Investigating stereotypes of social anxiety.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This paper consists of two studies that test for the presence and content of stereotypes of highly socially anxious individuals. DESIGN: The current studies examined traits that comprise social anxiety stereotypes, and then tested whether undergraduate students held part of this stereotype via an implicit-association test (IAT). METHODS: In Study 1, a sample of undergraduate students (n = 635) was asked to generate descriptors of people who are highly socially anxious. These descriptors were utilized to create the Social Anxiety Stereotype Measure (SASM) and the un

Stereotypic behaviors in degenerative dementias.

Stereotypies are simple or complex involuntary/unvoluntary behaviors, common in fronto-temporal dementia (FTD), but not studied in other types of degenerative dementias. The aim was to investigate stereotypy frequency and type in patients with FTD, Alzheimer's disease (AD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD) in a multicenter observational study; and to investigate the relation of stereotypies to cognitive, behavioral and motor impairment. One hundred fifty-five consecutive outpatients (45 AD, 40 FTD, 35 PSP and 35 PDD) were studied in four hospital

Stereotyped behavior in the ontogeny of rats.

The ontogenetic development of stereotyped behavior induced by activation of dopamine D1 and D2 receptors with apomorphine was studied in rat pups (1st month of life) and adult rats (2nd-12th months of life). Stereotyped sniffing and licking movements developed not simultaneously under the influence of apomorphine. Apomorphine-induced sniffing hyperactivity was observed in newborn animals, but disappeared after eye opening (day 18 of life). Stereotyped licking movements (long-term intense licking of the wall of the actograph) induced by activation of dopamine D2 receptors with apomorphine were

Measurement of rodent stereotyped behavior.

This unit presents a quantitative, observational method for the assessment of rodent stereotyped behavior which consists of motor responses that are repetitive, invariant, and seemingly without purpose or goal. The most classic behavioral pattern that is characteristic of stereotypy is that elicited by high doses of stimulants, such as cocaine and amphetamine, in rats, although it can also occur in response to other drugs or neurotoxic treatments affecting the basal ganglia. An observational time-sampling procedure is described in which animals are observed and rated by an experimenter, who is

Tactile defensiveness and stereotyped behaviors.

OBJECTIVES: This study explores the constructs of stereotyped behaviors (e.g., repetitive motor patterns, object manipulations, behavioral rigidities) and tactile defensiveness as relevant to occupational therapy theory and practice and attempts to test their purported relationships in children with developmental disabilities. METHOD: Twenty-eight children with developmental disabilities and autism were assessed on eight factors of stereotyped behavior via a questionnaire and by four measures of tactile defensiveness. The subjects' scores from the questionnaire were correlated with their scor

The psychology of perserverative and stereotyped behaviour.

Many forms of psychopathology in higher animals and humans include the production of maladaptive, repetitive behaviour. Behaviour which is both repetitive and excessive in amount can be described as stereotyped whereas behaviour which represents a restriction of behavioural possibilities without excessive production can be described as perseverative. Both types of repetition can result from pathology in the neural mechanisms which control either the production of motor output or the organisation of behaviour at a higher level. A number of forms of repetitive behaviour can be induced environmen

Women in treatment: beyond the stereotype.

A sample of 1776 adult women in treatment for chemical dependency was divided into two age groups: 30 or under and over 30. The two groups were compared for substance use histories and other psychosocial variables. Significant differences emerged in the use of illicit drugs, social use patterns and familial histories. Findings suggest that differences may be related to generational as well as age effects. The study highlights the heterogeneity of women in treatment and emphasizes the need to assess and respond to women's chemical dependency in the context of sociocultural transitions.

Stereotypes of nihilists are overwhelmingly negative.

Existential nihilism is on the rise in modern societies, but no previous work has investigated the social psychology of seeing no meaning in life. In the current research, five studies (N = 1,634) show that targets' existential nihilist beliefs elicit a range of negative stereotypes about personality traits, commonly valued social traits, and targets' ability to perform basic adaptive social tasks. Results demonstrate that these negative stereotypes are mediated by belief that the target is depressed more than the belief the target is non-religious or that the target does not plan for the futu

Serial murder: An unusual stereotype.

Serial murders attract attention from the media, mental health experts, academia, and the general public. We present a case of serial murders that took place in a limited area and which caused public anxiety and anguish in central India. All the victims were homeless beggars, who were bludgeoned to death (crush injury). Individual murders were initially investigated by different police stations; fortunately, since they sent all the bodies to a common autopsy centre, a forensic pathologist was able to link all the cases, the first person to do so. This emphasises the need for sharing informatio

Repetitive and stereotypic phenomena and dementia.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral disturbances of dementia, such as repetitive and stereotypic phenomena, can be distressing to caregivers and may lead to early institutionalization of the patient. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to examine the phenomenon of repetitive phenomena in patients with dementia. METHODS: We searched the PubMed electronic databases for original research and review articles on repetitive phenomena in patients with dementia using the search terms "repetitive behavior, stereotypic behavior, dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Frontotemporal dementia." RESULTS: Repetitive an

Stereotypic progressions in psychotic behavior.

Dopamine receptor supersensitivity (DARSS) often is invoked as a mechanism possibly underlying disordered thought processes and agitation states in psychiatric disorders. This review is focused on identified means for producing DARSS and associating the role of other monoaminergic systems in modulating DARSS. Dopamine (DA) receptors, experimentally, are prone to become supersensitive and to thus elicit abnormal behaviors when coupled with DA or a receptor agonist. In intact (control) rats repeated DA D₁ agonist treatments fail to sensitize D₁ receptors, while repeated D₂ agonist treatments sen

Survey of stereotypic behavior in prosimians.

Captive animals have been observed to perform a variety of stereotypic behaviors. However, little is known about stereotypic behavior in prosimians. We sent surveys to 96 AZA-accredited institutions to examine stereotypic behavior in these primates. Forty-eight surveys were returned, providing information on 440 individuals of 10 genera. According to the responses, 13.2% of the prosimians surveyed exhibited some form of stereotypic behavior. Pacing was the most common behavior. A logistic regression was used to examine intrinsic characteristics that might influence the performance of stereotyp

Stereotyped behaviours in blind children.

Stereotyped behaviours occur frequently in blind children. Most authors attribute stereotyped mannerisms to factors such as hospitalisation, motor limitations, and reduced capacity for exploration. There seems to be a specific association between blindness and behavioural mannerisms, such as eye pressing and eye poking, which have been observed in children with peripheral blindness. We studied the prevalence of stereotyped motor behaviours in a sample of congenitally blind children with and without other neurodevelopmental disabilities in order to assess the types and features of such stereoty
