Stifle disorders: cranial cruciate ligament, meniscus, upward fixation of the patella.

Stifle injury in cattle can be a debilitating condition. Stifle injuries often present as nonspecific lameness with subtle clinical signs. Physical examination with manipulation of the stifle joint, radiographs, and analysis of the joint fluid can help to make a diagnosis. Cranial cruciate and collateral ligament injuries are among the most common traumatic injuries of the stifle joint. Although the prognosis is guarded, better success and less degenerative change are expected with early diagnosis and treatment. Meniscal injuries and upward fixation of the patella are less commonly diagnosed,

Comparison of trot kinetics between dogs with stifle or hip arthrosis.

The purposes of this study were: 1) to describe and compare the trotting gait of normal and lame dogs secondary to stifle (GONOA) or hip (COXOA) osteoarthritis (OA) using multiple ground reaction forces (GRF) parameters, and 2) to pinpoint any characteristic in gait profile ('signatures') which could help to discriminate a lameness secondary to GONOA or COXOA. Fifty-one large breed dogs with OA (19 GONOA, 32 COXOA) and 22 normal dogs were included in the study. The vertical and cranio-caudal (braking-propelling) GRF were collected. The total stance time, and for each orthogonal vector, the pea

The epidemiology of stifle joint disease in an insured Swedish dog population.

BACKGROUND: Stifle joint diseases (SJD) are common in dogs and include a variety of diagnoses. The objective of the study was to provide an overview of the epidemiology of SJD in insured dogs. METHODS: An historical single cohort study of dogs insured in Agria Pet Insurance (2011-2016) in Sweden was performed. Incidence and relative risk (RR) of SJD was calculated for the whole dog population and for subgroups divided by breed, breed group and sex. RESULTS: The study population included almost 600,000 insured dogs (>1.7 million dog-years). Ninety-three different stifle joint diagnoses were r

Are bacterial load and synovitis related in dogs with inflammatory stifle arthritis?

It has been proposed that small quantities of microbial material within synovial joints may act as a trigger for development of synovitis. We have previously identified an association between intra-articular bacteria and development of inflammatory stifle arthritis and cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) in dogs, and now wished to quantify bacterial load and markers of synovitis in dogs with and without stifle arthritis and CCLR. Joint tissues were collected from dogs with CCLR (n=51) and healthy dogs with normal stifles (n=9). Arthritis was assessed radiographically in CCLR dogs. Bacteri

Tibial Plateau and Stifle Joint Invasion with a Subcutaneous Mast Cell Tumor.

A 4 yr old female neutered Labrador retriever was referred with a history of left hind-limb lameness and an acute, nonpainful, subcutaneous mass on the medial aspect of the left stifle. Stifle radiographs and fine needle aspirates of the soft tissue mass performed by the referring veterinarian confirmed the presence of predominantly highly granulated mast cells, consistent with a mast cell tumor. Computed tomography demonstrated a soft tissue mass centered on the left medial stifle, with associated joint effusion and polyostotic lytic lesions on the tibial plateau and distal patella. Ultrasoun

Arthroscopic assessment of stifle synovitis in dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture.

Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CR) is a degenerative condition in dogs that typically has a non-contact mechanism. Subsequent contralateral rupture often develops in dogs with unilateral CR. Synovitis severity is an important factor that promotes ligament degradation. Consequently, we wished to evaluate the utility of arthroscopy for assessment of stifle synovitis in dogs with CR. Herein, we report results of a prospective study of 27 dogs with unilateral CR and bilateral radiographic osteoarthritis. Arthroscopic images and synovial biopsies from the lateral and medial joint pouches were o

Thermographic Evaluation of the Stifle Region in Dogs with a Rupture of the Cranial Cruciate Ligament.

BACKGROUND: Canine cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture is a common orthopedic condition leading to stifle joint dysfunction, discomfort, and reduced mobility. Diagnosis typically involves radiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In this study, we conducted a retrospective analysis to evaluate the use of infrared thermography in assessing local temperature and thermal patterns in dogs with acute-onset lameness due to CCL rupture compared to those with intact ligaments. METHODS: The study involved 12 dogs with cranial cruciate ligament rupture and nine do

Effect of different cocoon stifling methods on the properties of silk fibroin biomaterials.

Stifling treatments are applied to silk cocoons in order to kill the pupae, preventing the emergence of moths and allowing to preserve the silk during long periods of time. All of them involve the application of aggressive steps, such as sun exposure, hot steam from boiling water or hot air, during hours or even days. None of the scientific articles related to silk fibroin biomaterials has previously taken into account this fact in its section of materials and methods. In this work, the consequences of the stifling treatments most commonly used by the silk producing countries and companies are

Ligament and meniscus loading in the ovine stifle joint during normal gait.

BACKGROUND: The ovine stifle joint is an ideal preclinical model to study knee joint biomechanics. Knowledge of the ovine ligamentous and meniscal loading during normal gait is currently limited. METHODS: The in vivo kinematics of the ovine stifle joint (N=4) were measured during "normal" gait using a highly accurate instrumented spatial linkage (ISL, 0.3±0.2mm). These motions were reproduced in vitro using a unique robotic testing platform and the loads carried by the anterior/posterior cruciate ligaments (ACL/PCL), medial/lateral collateral ligaments (MCL/LCL), and medial/lateral menisci (M

Effectiveness of Methylene Blue in the Prevention of Stifle Joint Arthrofibrosis in Rabbit Models.

BACKGROUND: One of the major challenges in orthopedic surgery is the prevention of arthrofibrosis, which can be successfully alleviated in its early stages. Many studies suggest the administration of methylene blue (MB) as an accessible and effective agent for the prevention of post-operation adhesions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of MB in the prevention of arthrofibrosis. METHODS: This study was conducted on 18 New Zealand white female mature rabbits. The anterior cruciate ligament of the left stifle joint of each animal was cut during aseptic surgery. In the next

[Bursitis with severe tendon and muscle necrosis on the lateral stifle area in cattle].

In 21 animals, chronic swelling on the lateral aspect of the stifle also known as «perigonitis», «stable-syndrome» or «bursitis bicipitalis femoris» were evaluated. Ultrasonography showed increased fluid in the distal subtendinous bursa of the biceps femoris muscle and structural changes in the tendons, muscles, subcutis and fasciae. Soft tissue swelling and an irregular contour of the lateral tibial condyle were typical signs on radiographs. Macroscopic changes were found at the insertion of the biceps femoris muscle, the distal subtendinous bursa of the biceps femoris muscle, the lateral col

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the deep peri-articular tissue of the stifle in a dog.

A Belgian shepherd dog aged 4 years and 9 months was presented with acute onset of non-weight bearing lameness and stifle effusion of the left hind limb, caused by the deep form of a malignant fibrous histiocytoma originating in the deep musculature and fascia surrounding the stifle joint. The tumour progressed rapidly in the tissues along the femoral diaphysis with marked periosteal new bone formation. Cytology of a stifle joint aspirate revealed numerous large polygonal neoplastic cells with considerable anisocytosis and anisokaryosis. These cells were present in clusters, with cytoplasmic p
