BACKGROUND: Elastic compression stockings (ECS) are uncomfortable to wear but may prevent post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). The ability to predict PTS may help clinical decision making regarding the optimal duration of ECS after deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
AIMS: Predefined endpoint analysis of the Octavia study that randomized patients who compliantly used ECS up to one year after DVT to continue or discontinue ECS treatment. Primary aim was to identify predictors of PTS.
METHODS: Patient characteristics were collected and ultrasonography was performed to assess reflux, residual thrombosis and

Unilateral lower extremity edema and an increased risk of thromboembolism have been associated with hemiplegia following stroke. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of knee-high, graded elastic stockings on venous hemodynamics in hemiplegic patients. Thirty-six patients with recent cerebral infarcts were studied. The presence of underlying venous or arterial occlusive disease was excluded in all patients. Duplex scanning techniques were used to measure femoral and popliteal venous circumference, cross-sectional area, and peak flow velocity in the normal and paralyzed extremities

OBJECTIVES: Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) characterized by chronic pain, swelling and heaviness, and may result in ulceration. Elastic compression stockings (ECS) worn daily after DVT appear to reduce the incidence and severity of PTS. The aims of our study were to investigate practices and perceptions of DVT patients and physicians regarding the use of ECS after DVT.
METHODS: Two surveys were conducted. The first was sent to 225 staff and trainee clinicians and the second was administered to 150 DVT patients.
RESULTS: The results demonstrated

ObjectivesThis study aims to compare the effectiveness of compression bandages and compression stockings in the treatment of venous ulcers following venous ulcer surgery.MethodA total of 170 patients who underwent venous ulcer surgery were included in this retrospective study. Patients were divided into two groups: the first group used compression bandages, and the second group used compression stockings. In all patients, a sterile cotton dressing from the venous ulcer care kit was first applied directly over the open ulcer to protect the wound bed. Both groups were followed for 3 months. Demo

Pressure ulcers develop in patients who endure long periods of immobilization, often caused by conditions such as musculoskeletal and neurological diseases. Pressure ulcers adversely affect the patient and increase caregiver burden and healthcare costs. Typical sites for these ulcers include the sacrum, trochanters, and heels; they also occur on the nape of the neck, penis, nostrils, helix of the ear, and upper back. Compression stockings are commonly used to prevent and stop the progression of venous disorders, including deep vein thrombosis, but their role in the development of pressure ulce

Erythema nodosum (EN) is a septal panniculitis that is characterized clinically by tender, erythematous, subcutaneous nodules that are predominately localized on the pretibial lower legs. EN affects women more than men and can be idiopathic or secondary to another disease process such as infection or an immune response. Treatment options for erythema nodosum are suboptimal and often involve significant side effects or require a change in lifestyle. We investigated the effects of moderate 20 mmHg to 30 mmHg compression stockings as an alternative treatment method in two female patients with rec

Despite evidence that effective regimens are available for the prevention of venous thrombosis in fractured hip patients, many centers do not use prophylaxis. In order to evaluate the efficacy and safety of heparin and graduated compression stockings, we conducted a cohort study of 55 consecutive fractures hip patients treated postoperatively with heparin, 5,000 U every 12 h, and graduated compression stockings. The rates of venous thromboembolism and bleeding were compared with an historical cohort from Hamilton. Before discharge, 51 patients underwent bilateral venography. Deep venous thromb

BACKGROUND: Medical elastic compression stockings are widely used in venous diseases. Their effects on the venous system have been shown in the past. Up to now, little is known about the slope or stiffness factor of stockings.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of different slope and stiffness factors of medical elastic compression stockings on the venous system.
METHODS: Examinations were carried out in 29 legs of 25 different patients (12 men, 13 women) with a mean age of 66.0 years. All patients were known with chronic venous insufficiency. On all these patients three different elastic med

OBJECTIVE: Primary lymphoedema is rare and in most cases develops in the lower extremities. In some cases, conservative treatment is insufficient and can be supported by surgical procedure. The aim of this case study was to show the difference in the effectiveness of a compression wrap device and compression stockings in the treatment of primary lymphoedema.
METHOD: Before and after liposuction the patient was treated on an outpatient basis every day for three weeks. This consisted of complex decongestive therapy (CDT) including manual lymph drainage, tailored exercises, skin and nail care, c

Compressive stockings are considered the centerpiece of treatment in chronic venous disease (CVD). It is known that stockings fail in some patients for varied reasons: they are ineffective despite wear in some, but more commonly patients are unable or unwilling to use them as prescribed. Detailed statistics regarding stocking compliance have not been available except in a few selected series focused on leg ulcers. This study focuses on use, compliance, and efficacy of compression stockings among a large cohort of patients referred to a tertiary venous practice. A total of 3,144 new CVD patient

BACKGROUND: Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is a common and burdensome complication of deep venous thrombosis (DVT). Previous trials suggesting benefit of elastic compression stockings (ECS) to prevent PTS were small, single-centre studies without placebo control. We aimed to assess the efficacy of ECS, compared with placebo stockings, for the prevention of PTS.
METHODS: We did a multicentre randomised placebo-controlled trial of active versus placebo ECS used for 2 years to prevent PTS after a first proximal DVT in centres in Canada and the USA. Patients were randomly assigned to study groups

BACKGROUND: Despite the frequent use of medical compression stockings (MCS), reliable data are lacking on the frequency of MCS use and experience of patients with the treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Bonn Vein Study included 3,072 participants from the general population aged 18 to 79 years (1,350 men/1,722 women). Between 2007 and 2008 (Bonn Vein Study 2) 1,978 participants from the Bonn Vein Study 1 were reinvestigated. This paper combines the results of both investigations.
RESULTS: 14.6% (7.5% men, 20.3% women) reported having previously undergone treatment with compression stockings

Anticoagulation clinics are increasingly used to manage oral anticoagulant therapy in patients with venous thromboembolic disease (VTE). Such clinics may be in a position to assume greater responsibility for other aspects of the long-term management of VTE, including prevention of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS). Current guidelines suggest use of graduated elastic compression stockings with a pressure of 30-40 mm Hg at the ankle for 2 years following the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) to prevent PTS. A survey of anticoagulation clinic providers was conducted to determine to what extent

A prospective randomized trial evaluated graded-compression antiembolism stockings for prevention of leg vein thrombosis as assessed by Doppler ultrasound, in patients undergoing total hip replacement. The study was terminated after the evaluation of 18 patients revealed a significantly greater incidence of deep vein thrombosis, documented by phlebography, in patients without stockings (5 of 10) compared to those with stockings (none of 8, p less than 0.03). Three of the patients with thrombosis developed pulmonary emboli. Although the sample size of this study is small, the implication that g

INTRODUCTION: Elastic compression stockings (ECSs) are used to treat symptoms of venous insufficiency. However, lack of patient compliance can limit their effectiveness. In a secondary analysis of the SOX Trial, a randomized trial of active vs. placebo ECSs worn for 2 years to prevent postthrombotic syndrome after deep vein thrombosis, we aimed to describe patient-reported reasons for nondaily use of ECS and to identify predictors of noncompliance during follow-up.
METHODS: At each follow-up visit of the SOX Trial, patients were asked how many days per week they wore study stockings, and if n

(1) Background: Stroke patients with hemiplegia have an increased risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT increases the risk of life-threatening pulmonary embolism and is associated with poor prognosis. The early wearing of compression stockings can help prevent DVT. This study aimed to assess the impact of compression stockings on body balance in stroke patients with unilateral lower extremity muscle weakness; (2) Methods: Hemiplegic stroke patients in the subacute phase who were able to walk with assistance were recruited. The patients were divided into two groups: one group recei

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to address benefits and harms of using elastic compression stockings after lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis.
METHODS: We searched 7 electronic databases through January 15, 2015, including randomized controlled trials (RCTs)/quasi-randomized trials reporting on elastic compression stocking efficacy on postthrombotic syndrome incidence, recurrent venous thromboembolism, mortality, and acute pain after deep vein thrombosis. Two reviewers independently screened records, extracted data, assessed risk of bias, and assessed confidenc

BACKGROUND: Overnight fluid shift from the legs to the neck may narrow the upper airway and contribute to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) pathogenesis. We hypothesized that below-the-knee compression stockings will decrease OSA severity in a general OSA population by decreasing daytime leg fluid accumulation and overnight fluid shift and increasing upper-airway size.
METHODS: Patients with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index ≥ 10) were randomized to wear compression stockings during the daytime or to a control group for 2 weeks. Overnight polysomnography with measurement of leg and neck fluid volumes and
