BACKGROUND: While high resolution esophageal manometry combined with impedancometry has demonstrated that gastric pressurizations lead to rumination, the contribution of upper esophageal sphincter (UES) and esophagogastric junction (EGJ) function to rumination is unclear. Behavioral therapy with diaphragmatic breathing (DB) can reduce rumination. We aimed to evaluate the pressures in the stomach, EGJ and UES during rumination and the effects of DB augmented with biofeedback therapy.
METHODS: Sixteen patients with rumination were studied with manometry and impedancometry before and after a mea

Vagally-mediated regulation of motility in the abomasal body by duodenal and abomasal antral motility was demonstrated in acutely prepared anaesthetized sheep. The enteric plexuses between the abomasal body, antrum and duodenum were interrupted by transection. Antral contractions were more effective than duodenal contractions at causing inhibition of the abomasal body, and antral isometric conditions were more effective than antral isotonic conditions. Inhibition of motility in the abomasal body was reduced by unilateral cervical vagotomy, was abolished by bilateral cervical vagotomy, and was

BACKGROUND: Belching disorders and rumination syndrome (RS) are disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs) in Rome IV. Belching disorders are composed of excessive gastric belching (GB) and supragastric belching (SGB). Excessive GB is related to physiological phenomenon whereas excessive SGB and RS are behavioral disorders.
SUMMARY: A recent large internet survey found that prevalence of belching disorders and RS were 1% and 2.8%, respectively. It has been recognized that not a few patients with two behavioral disorders, excessive SGB and RS, could be misdiagnosed as proton pump inhibitors (P

Gastrointestinal (GI) infections in sheep have significant implications for animal health, welfare and productivity, as well as being a source of zoonotic pathogens. Interactions between pathogens and epithelial cells at the mucosal surface play a key role in determining the outcome of GI infections; however, the inaccessibility of the GI tract in vivo significantly limits the ability to study such interactions in detail. We therefore developed ovine epithelial organoids representing physiologically important gastric and intestinal sites of infection, specifically the abomasum (analogous to th

The effect of alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonists, cholinergic drugs, autacoids and some gastrointestinal hormones upon the evocation of rumination in sheep when injected by close-arterial injection into the forestomach was examined. Apart from adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine and xylazine only one alpha-2 agonist (BHT933) evoked rumination effectively. Acetylcholine, neostigmine, the gastrointestinal hormones and the autacoids examined did not evoke rumination consistently. Tyramine did not usually evoke rumination and guanethidine injected before adrenaline did not prevent the latter from evo

BACKGROUND: Rumination syndrome is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by effortless and repetitive regurgitation of recently ingested food from the stomach to the oral cavity followed by either re-swallowing or spitting. Rumination is thought to occur due to a reversal of the esophagogastric pressure gradient. This is achieved by a coordinated abdominothoracic maneuver consisting of a thoracic suction, crural diaphragm relaxation and an increase in intragastric pressure. Careful history is important in the diagnosis of rumination syndrome; patients often report "vomiting" or

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a devastating psychiatric illness that is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Aberrant visceral interoceptive processing within the insula has been hypothesized to be an important mechanism in AN's pathophysiology due to the theoretical link between interoception and emotional experience. We therefore utilized functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine whether altered insula functioning underlies visceral interoception in AN. Fifteen females with restricting-type AN and 15 healthy control females underwent fMRI while performing an interoce

Major aspects of forestomach anatomy in llamas and camels are described. The pattern of forestomach motility is a succession of motoric cycles, consisting of A- and B-contraction sequences and a pause. Respective differences between llamas and camels are discussed. Observations on regulation of motility are mentioned. Occurrences and courses of rumination and eructation within the motility cycles are emphasized. Motility of the forestomach achieves a selective retention of feed particles in the forestomach; a long retention time is a prerequisite for an effective microbial digestion, especiall

The intestinal anatomy of fallow deer (Dama dama), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), and elk (Alces alces) was studied. Special attention was given to the spiral loop of the ascending colon and the proportional length of the small and large intestines. The spiral loop of the ascending colon is wound 3-3 1/2 turns in the fallow deer, 2-3 turns in the white-tailed deer, 5 1/2-7 turns in the reindeer and 3-4 turns in the elk. The distal half of the last centrifugal turn of the spiral loop, regularly has one additional loop in the ventro-caudal quadrant of t

Ruminants are dependent on their gut microbiomes for nutrient extraction from plant diets. However, knowledge about the composition, diversity, function, and spatial structure of gut microbiomes, especially in wild ruminants, is limited, largely because analysis has been restricted to faeces or the rumen. In two geographically separated reindeer subspecies, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed strong spatial structuring, and pronounced differences in microbial diversity of at least 33 phyla across the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine (including faeces). The main structural f

BACKGROUND: Thiamine status of ruminants is adversely affected in acidic rumen conditions. However, there have been limited published case study data related to thiamine deficiency of ruminants with acute ruminal lactic acidosis (ARLA).
HYPOTHESIS: Thiamine deficiency would occur in sheep with ARLA.
ANIMALS: Thirteen Ak-Karaman (white Karaman) sheep with ARLA, aged 1 year (ARLA group) and 10 healthy Ak-Karaman sheep, aged 1 year (control group) were used.
METHODS: After clinical examination, rumen fluid samples of all sheep were obtained with a stomach tube and examined immediately. Blood s

The experiments were carried out on 5 sheep with chronic fistulae of the rumen and of the fundus and pyloric part of the abomasum. The motor activity of the parts of the stomach containing fistulae was recorded by the balloon method. The analysis of the obtained contraction curves showed that the motor activity of the pyloric part was more intense than that of the fundus of the abomasum, and the intensity increased with filling of the multichamber stomach with food, food intake increased the tonus and the intensity of peristaltic movements in the fundus and pyloric part of the abomasum, rumina

Rumination syndrome is a functional disorder characterized by the involuntary regurgitation of recently swallowed food from the stomach into the mouth, from where it can be re-chewed or expelled. Clinically, it is characterized by repeated episodes of effortless food regurgitation. The most usual complaint is frequent vomiting. The physical mechanism that generates regurgitation events is dependent on an involuntary process that alters abdominal and thoracic pressures accompanied by a permissive oesophageal-gastric junction. The diagnosis of rumination syndrome is clinical, highlighting the im

Rumination syndrome is a functional bowel disorder where stomach contents effortlessly regurgitate into the mouth. It is an entirely separate entity to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and requires behavioural rather than pharmaceutical management. Symptoms usually respond well to treatment, though in extreme cases, patients may experience significant weight loss and require inpatient admission.

This is the first integrated study of the effects on gastric secretion, inflammation and fundic mucins after infection with L3 T. circumcincta and in the very early period following transplantation of adult worms. At 3 months-of-age, 20 Coopworth lambs were infected intraruminally with 35,000 L3; infected animals were killed on Days 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 post-infection and 6 controls on either Day 0 or 30 post-infection. Another 15 Romney cross lambs received 10,000 adult worms at 4-5 months-of-age though surgically-implanted abomasal cannulae and were killed after 6, 12, 24 and 72 hours; uninf

The effects of intraperitoneal pretreatment, 48 h beforehand, with zinc sulphate (22, 44 or 88 mg/kg) were studied on gastric ulceration, gastric secretion and changes in stomach wall mast cell counts induced after 4 h by reserpine (5 mg/kg) given intraperitoneally to intact (unoperated for pylorus occlusion) or pylorus-occluded rats. Zinc sulphate dose-dependently antagonised the gastric actions of reserpine by preventing ulceration in the ruminal and glandular segments of the stomach, reducing acid secretion, and inhibiting mast cell degranulation which occurred mainly in the glandular mucos

To improve the biogas production from corn stovers, a new bionic reactor was designed and constructed. The bionic reactor simulated the rumen digestion of ruminants. The liquid was separated from corn stovers and refluxed into corn stovers again, which simulated the undigested particles separated from completely digested materials and fed back again for further degradation in ruminant stomach. Results showed that the bionic reactor was effective for anaerobic digestion of corn stovers. The liquid amount and its reflux showed an obvious positive correlation with biogas production. The highest b

Rumination syndrome is the non-purposeful regurgitation of recently ingested food from the stomach to the mouth, where it is either expelled or reswallowed. Adolescent rumination syndrome (ARS) is a rare condition of which many physicians are unaware. Patients often are misdiagnosed or undergo costly testing, and as a result, diagnosis and treatment are often delayed. While ARS is not life-threatening, it does have medical and emotional effects on the patient and the patient's family. Diagnosis of ARS is based upon the Rome III diagnostic criteria. Antroduodenal manometry, while not required f

In the complex called vagal indigestion two main types of stenosis can be distinguished, pyloric stenosis and stenosis between the reticulum and omasum or reticulo-omasal stenosis. Laboratory examinations of blood and rumen fluid were carried out in 10 cows with reticulo-omasal stenosis. The results are discussed with respect to the differential diagnoses of pyloric stenosis. In the cows with reticulo-omasal stenosis no metabolic alkalosis occurred and consequently dehydration and uraemia did not develop. For the clinician valuable points of difference were a more prolonged and chronic course
