Salivary cytokine profiles in the immunocompetent individual with Candida-associated denture stomatitis.

Cell-mediated immunity conferred by CD4+ T helper cells is considered the predominant host defense against mucosal Candida infections, with Thelper (Th1)-type responses associated with resistance to infection and Th2-type responses associated with susceptibility to infection. Oropharyngeal candidiasis, the most common oral opportunistic infection in HIV-infected persons, is associated with a Th2-type cytokine profile in saliva. To obtain more direct evidence for a role of salivary cytokines in susceptibility to oropharyngeal candidiasis during immunosuppression, we evaluated Th1/Th2-type cytok

Chlorhexidine-miconazole-loaded iron oxide nanoparticles inhibit denture stomatitis biofilms in vitro.

PURPOSE: This study used chitosan (CS)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) to create a dual-nanocarrier consisting of chlorhexidine (CHX) and miconazole (MCZ) and assessed their impact on a denture stomatitis microcosm biofilm. METHODS: CHX and MCZ were immobilized on IONPs functionalized with CS and the nanocarriers were characterized by physicochemical tests. Biofilms originating from the saliva of patients with denture stomatitis were formed on acrylic surfaces and were treated with IONPs-CS carrying different concentrations of CHX-MCZ (7.8, 19.5, 39, or 78 µg/mL). Untreated biofilms s

Denture-related stomatitis managed with tissue conditioner and hard autopolymerising reline material.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the response of denture-related stomatitis (DS) under management with a tissue conditioner (TC) and autopolymerising hard reline material (AHRM). BACKGROUND DATA: Denture-related stomatitis affects up to 75% of denture wearers; not wearing the denture at night, using TC or prescribing topical or systemic antifungal agents could reduce its incidence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a double-blind study consisting of 44 participants with DS who wear denture; they were randomly divided into two unmatched groups according to the material used for the management of DS. The T

Immunohistochemical localization of type IV collagen and laminin (alpha1) in denture stomatitis.

Chronic clinical irritation of the palatal mucosa by dentures involves a series of histological changes in epithelial and connective tissues, inflammatory cells and the vasculature. No single change is pathognomic of this inflammatory process. The rupture of basement membrane associated with the development of denture stomatitis often marks an important stage. This study investigated modifications in basement membrane organisation, especially the distribution of type IV collagen and a specific laminin chain (alpha1), during denture stomatitis. Biopsies of palatal mucosa were obtained from 12 p

Anti-Candida activity and biocompatibility of silver nanoparticles associated with denture glaze: a new approach to the management of denture stomatitis.

The association of silver nanoparticles (AgNps) to sealant agent Palaseal® can be a promising alternative for complete denture wearers who may develop denture stomatitis (DS). The study aimed to evaluate the anti-Candida and biocompatible potential of silver nanoparticles synthesized by three routes associated with denture glaze to prevent and/or treat oral candidiasis. Surface acrylic resin specimens were treated with different associations of glaze with AgNps (VER+AgUV, VER+AgTurk and VER+AgGm). As controls, specimens were treated with glaze+nystatin (VER+Nyst), glaze only (VER) or submerged

Topical curcumin in the treatment of denture stomatitis: a systematic review of clinical efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: Conventional treatment for Denture Stomatitis (DS) uses antifungals, but microbial resistance and adverse effects from prolonged use have led to the search for alternatives. In this context, Curcumin shows promise due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. This is to systematically review and evaluate the efficacy of topical curcumin in different drug delivery systems for treating DS, compared to other therapies. METHODS: Two independent reviewers conducted a literature search between August 2024 and March 2025 across seven databases: PubMed, BVS/Medline, EMBASE,

Denture stomatitis associated with small-colony variants of Staphylococcus aureus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The small-colony variants (SCVs) of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from persistent and recurrent infections, especially after placement of medical devices having direct contact with human tissues. The emergence of SCVs is a survival strategy of S. aureus which enables them to hide inside host's cells and induces a less severe immune response than to wild-type S. aureus. However, contrary to other medical devices, dental prosthesis as a surface potentially colonized by SCVs of S. aureus has not been examined thus far. We reported the first case of SCVs - S. aureus infection in

Growth inhibition of oral bacteria related to denture stomatitis by anti-candidal chalcones.

In the antimicrobial therapy of denture stomatitis, it is desirable to inhibit the growth of not only the primary causative organism, Candida albicans, but also other oral bacteria closely associated with the condition. Three synthetic anti-candidal chalcones were characterized and compared for their additional activity in inhibiting these causative bacteria. Among the tested chalcones, 2,4,2'-trihydroxy-5'-methylchalcone showed the highest activity for different Gram-positive bacteria. It inhibited the growth of streptococci, staphylococci and lactobacilli at 25.0-50.0 micrograms/mL which was
