The association of remote Streptococcus bovis bacteremia with colonic neoplasia.

We prospectively studied five patients with a remote history of Streptococcus bovis bacteremia who had not previously been evaluated for colonic pathology. This study was prompted by several reports of concomitant neoplasia in patients with recent S. bovis bacteremia. The patients were studied at a mean of 32 months after bacteremia. Despite the absence of other signs or symptoms suggestive of bowel disease, a negative test for occult blood in stool and a negative fecal culture for S. bovis, two patients were found to have neoplastic polyps of the colon. These findings suggest that the risk of

Humoral reactions in human endocarditis due to Streptococcus bovis: evidence for a common S bovis antigen.

Humoral reactions to native culture filtrates of Streptococcus bovis were studied in patients with endocarditis by means of two-dimensional crossed immunoelectrophoresis. Serum from patients with S bovis endocarditis produced eight different precipitin arcs. Lex antigen cross-reacted with sera from patients with viridans streptococcal endocarditis, and TA antigen cross-reacted with ribitol teichoic acid-positive sera from patients with Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia. One antigen, common (c), was immunoreactive with all 10 sera from S bovis-infected patients. Antibody to this antigen was not

Streptococcus bovis prosthetic valve endocarditis associated with silent colonic carcinoma.

A 75-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with a 3-month history of fever. Of note, she had a bioprosthetic mitral valve replacement 1 year prior to admission. Streptococcus bovis was isolated from three sets of blood cultures. An echocardiogram showed a flickering mass attached to the bioprosthesis. Her blood culture became sterile by the fourth day of ceftriaxone therapy. In spite of the absence of gastrointestinal symptoms, screening colonoscopy revealed an invasive colonic adenocarcinoma. The association linking S. bovis endocarditis and colonic tumours is well recognised. However,

Cerebral ischemia caused by Streptococcus bovis aortic endocarditis: case report.

Cerebral ischemic processes associated with infective endocarditis caused by Streptococcus bovis are rare; only 2 cases having been reported. Here we report a case of a 50-year-old man with S. bovis endocarditis who presented signs of frontal, parietal and occipital lobe cerebral ischemia. This is the first case reported in which the presence of hemianopsia preceded the endocarditis diagnosis. Initially, the clinical manifestations suggested a systemic vasculitis. Later, vegetating lesions were identified in the aortic valve and S. bovis grew in blood cultures. Antibiotic use and aortic valve

Streptococcus bovis endocarditis secondary to colorectal cancer: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus bovis (S. bovis) bacteremia and infective endocarditis have a well-established association with colorectal cancer (CRC), though the mechanisms underlying this potentially bidirectional relationship remain poorly understood. CASE SUMMARY: This case report describes a 55-year-old male with a history of hypertension and hemicolectomy due to advanced colorectal adenomas who presented with syncope, septic shock, and a 12-pound weight loss over 3 weeks. Subsequent blood cultures grew S. bovis, with a transthoracic echocardiogram revealed mobile vegetations on both the aort

Characterization of Endolysin LyJH307 with Antimicrobial Activity Against Streptococcus Bovis.

Streptococcus bovis (S. bovis) is one of the critical initiators of acute acidosis in ruminants. Therefore, we aimed to develop and characterize the endolysin LyJH307, which can lyse ruminal S. bovis. We tested the bactericidal activity of recombinant LyJH307 against S. bovis JB1 under a range of pH, temperature, NaCl, and metal ion concentrations. In silico analyses showed that LyJH307 has a modular design with a distinct, enzymatically active domain of the NLPC/P60 superfamily at the N-terminal and a cell wall binding domain of the Zoocin A target recognition domain (Zoocin A_TRD) superfamil

Asymptomatic colonic carcinoma revealed by investigation of Streptococcus bovis bacteremia.

A case of bacteremia in a patient with a prosthetic aortic valve is reported. The identification of streptococcus bovis as the causative organism and its known association with gastrointestinal disease led to investigations which revealed carcinoma of the sigmoid colon in an asymptomatic patient. The association of colonic lesions with S. bovis bacteremia is briefly reviewed.

Epidemiological investigation of Streptococcus bovis in yaks in different regions of Tibet.

Streptococcal diseases critically harm the health and productivity of animals as well as humans, and are generally considered an obstacle in the development of the breeding industry. However, there is little data on Streptococcus bovis in different seasons in different regions of Tibet. In this study, a total of 964 yak serum samples from three different cities in the Tibet Autonomous Region, comprising 326 samples from Lhasa city, 522 samples from Naqu City, and 116 samples from Xigatse city, were collected randomly. An enzyme-linked S. bovis ELISA kit (YJ233340) was used for detection. An ov

Diagnosis and Treatment of Childhood Meningitis Caused by Streptococcus bovis Group.

Streptococcus bovis is a rare, but important cause of bacterial meningitis in children. Since its discovery in the early 1970s, the pathogen has undergone multiple taxonomic changes producing four distinct subspecies today, the most prevalent of which is S. gallolyticus subsp pasteurianus in infants and children. While initially reported as sporadic case reports, there is a growing body of literature documenting invasive disease primarily in neonates and infants clinically indistinguishable from group B streptococcus. In this review, I discuss the taxonomic evolution of S. bovis meningitis and

The association of Streptococcus bovis bacteremia and gastrointestinal diseases: a retrospective analysis.

There is a well-established association between Streptococcus bovis bacteremia (SBB) and colorectal cancer. However, SBB is also frequently associated with chronic liver disease and has been described with other gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence of gastrointestinal disease in patients with SBB. Retrospective analysis of the microbiology database at Jackson Memorial Medical Center, Miami, Florida, between 1992 and 2002, was performed. Patients' clinical records were reviewed, with special focus on underlying gastrointestinal disease or other major c

Clinicopathology of meningoventriculitis due to Streptococcus bovis infection in neonatal calves.

Three neonatal calves ranging in age from 4 to 14 days were examined pathologically and bacteriologically. The calves showed depression, anorexia, pyrexia, and difficulty or inability to stand followed by cloudiness of the ocular aqueous humor or cornea. Autopsy revealed congestion, petechiae, and cloudy areas in the meninges. Histologically, the central nervous system (CNS) lesions were prominent and limited to the meninges where fibrinous exudate and infiltrations of neutrophils, macrophages, and lymphocytes were present. There were mild or slight degrees of choroid plexitis and ependymitis.

[Streptococcus bovis meningitis and sepsis in neonates: report of two cases].

Streptococcus bovis is a veterinary organism rarely previously reported in the neonatal infection. Two cases are presented of neonatal infection by this organism; one case manifested with meningitis and the other, with sepsis. Seizure and respiratory distress were the symptoms found in these two babies, respectively. Following adequate treatment, recovery was complete, and the infants enjoyed healthy lives post-discharge. S. bovis is always sensitive to penicillin, but resistant strain has been reported recently. It is reasonable to treat infant patients infected by this organism with a combin

Is colonoscopy necessary in cases of infection by Streptococcus bovis biotype II?

The association of colorectal neoplasia (CRN) with Streptococcus bovis biotype I (SBI) infection is well recognized. However, this is not the case for Streptococcus bovis biotype II (SBII). We conducted this study in order to analyze the relationship between SBII and CRN. We analyzed all cases of bacteremia due to SBI (n = 99) and SBII (n = 36) diagnosed in our hospital (during the period 1988-2011) that were followed up with colonoscopy. In addition, we reviewed the literature (during the period 1982-2011) to select all cases of infection of SB that had undergone colonoscopy or other adequate
