Streptococcus constellatus are gram-positive cocci belonging to the Streptococcus milleri group that have a propensity to cause bacteremia and abscesses, especially in immunocompromised patients. Here, we report the case of a 39-year-old male who was initially admitted to the hospital for diabetic ketoacidosis. During the hospitalization, he developed sepsis and blood cultures grew Streptococcus constellatus. CT imaging revealed multiple hepatic abscesses. A periapical abscess of the left mandibular central incisor found on CT Scan of face was identified as the likely source of infection. IR-g

Eikenella corrodens is a gram-negative, facultative anaerobic rod that frequently exists as part of normal human flora in the upper respiratory tract and gastrointestinal tract. Recently, E. corrodens is reported as a rare causative agent of empyematic lesion. We report a case of 10-year-old girl with acute subdural abscess. She developed a high grade fever, swelling of the left periorbital area, right sided partial seizure and hemiplegia. Brain CT and MRI showed left parietal subdural abscess. Because intravenous antibiotic therapy was not effective enough and her neurological symptoms progre

Streptococcus constellatus, a member of the Streptococcus anginosus group, is a commensal bacterium that causes pyogenic infections, particularly abscesses. This report describes the case of a 28-year-old immunocompetent man who developed a brain abscess and epidural empyema after pneumonia. MRI suggested an abscess, which was confirmed by culture, revealing S. constellatus. Treatment included abscess drainage and ceftriaxone administration, which led to a full recovery. Diagnosis is challenging because of overlapping features with other bacteria. Imaging and culturing are crucial for identifi

RATIONALE: Descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM) is a rare but severe mediastinal infection. If not diagnosed and treated promptly, the consequences can be very serious. Here, we shared a successful diagnosis and treatment case of DNM that originates from oral to neck and mediastinum caused by Streptococcus constellatus (S constellatus). S constellatus is a clinically uncommon gram-positive coccus and is known for its ability to form abscesses. Timely surgical drainage and the correct use of antibiotics are key to successful treatment.

Streptococcus constellatus (S. constellatus) is a well-known part of the normal flora in humans. Pyogenic spondylitis (PS) induced by S. constellatus is very rare. In this case, a 46-year-old male patient presented to our hospital with a 2-month history of low back pain and weakness in both legs. Based on his clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, blood culture results, imaging and histopathological findings, the patient was diagnosed with PS caused by S. constellatus. One unique aspect of this case is the acute and severe course of infection, which resulted in multiple organ dysfunctio

We present a case of prosthetic valve endocarditis, which was caused by a rare etiological agent, Streptococcus constellatus. In our case, transesophageal echocardiography showed a large and broad abscess formation throughout the patient's aortic prosthetic valve ring and left atrium. Despite specific intravenous antibiotic therapy, the infection was uncontrollable, and the patient underwent surgical treatment. The pathogen rarely causes endocarditis, but it is known to have a strong potential to form abscess, and therefore its infection may be more serious than other Streptococcus species. Ou

Management of sore throat requires robust decision-making to balance successfully the conflicting risks of unnecessary antibiotic use against those of untreated bacterial infection. We present a case of fulminant sepsis caused by Streptococcus constellatus, presenting as a sore throat, initially managed conservatively. Despite subsequent appropriate anti-microbial therapy and surgical drainage, contiguous spread ultimately involved the deep neck spaces, mediastinum and thoracic wall, and was complicated by severe aspiration pneumonia, pharyngocutaneous and bronchopleural fistulation. The Anginosus group of the genus Streptococcus has been the subject of much taxonomic confusion, which has hampered the full appreciation of its clinical significance. The purpose of this study was to critically re-examine the taxonomy of the Anginosus group, with special attention to β-haemolytic, Lancefield group C strains, using multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) combined with 16S rRNA gene sequence and phenotypic analyses. Phylogenetic analysis of concatenated sequences of seven housekeeping genes previously used for examination of viridans streptococci distinguished seven distinct and co

BACKGROUND: The incidence of community-acquired empyema caused by the Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) has been on the rise in the 2020s. To the best of our knowledge, while empyema caused individually by either strain has been reported, there are no reports on empyema caused by concurrent infection with these two strains. Here, we report for the first time empyema caused by concurrent infection with Streptococcus intermedius and Streptococcus constellatus (both SAG species) in a postoperative patient who had been treated for floor of the mouth carcinoma.

Edwardsiella tarda is an anaerobic, gram-negative rod bacterium associated with freshwater and marine life. Human E. tarda infections are rare, and most infections in humans cause gastroenteritis. Extraintestinal infections of E. tarda such as pleural empyema are particularly rare. A 72-year-old man was admitted with cough and purulent sputum. His medical history included periodontal disease and gastric cancer for which he had undergone total gastrectomy. Chest computed tomography showed left pleural effusion with foci of gas, and both E. tarda and Streptococcus constellatus were cultured from

BACKGROUND Pyometra is an accumulation of pus in the uterine cavity. It is rare in the general population but more common in elderly women. If diagnosed in the early stage, life-threating conditions may be avoided. The most common etiological microorganisms of pyometra are Escherichia coli, Bacteroides species, Staphylococci (eg, epidermidis) and Streptococci. Occasionally, atypical bacteria may be the cause. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 75-year-old woman, with multiple risk factors, admitted to the Gynecology Department with a 15-day history of yellowish-brown vaginal discharge. Becau

Odontogenic infection in immunocompromised patients tends to extend systemically beyond the oral cavity. Our case report presents a patient with sepsis due to a Streptococcus constellatus (S. constellatus) odontogenic infection in a 64-year-old-immunocompromised woman with Cogan's syndrome. She had been suffering from chronic mandibular osteomyelitis which was thought to have been caused by dental caries and/or chronic periodontitis with furcation involvement of the left mandibular first molar. We suspect that the acute symptoms of the chronic osteomyelitis due to S. constellatus led to the sy

BACKGROUND Except for neonates, streptococci other than Streptococcus pneumoniae are a rare cause of acute bacterial meningitis. Streptococcus constellatus is a member of the Streptococcus anginosus group of gram-positive streptococci. It is a commensal microbe of the mucosae of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and urogenital tract. Rarely, it becomes pathogenic and causes contiguous or distant infections after mucosal damage. This report describes a 19-year-old immunocompetent man who developed bacterial meningitis, lung abscess, and brainstem infarct secondary to Streptococcus conste

We report a rare case of suppurative thrombophlebitis of the posterior neck caused by Streptococcus constellatus. A 69-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital with neck pain and fever, which had persisted for 16 days prior to hospitalization. On day 1 (day of admission), blood cultures (later identifying S. constellatus) were performed, and ceftriaxone (CTRX) IV (2 g SID) was started. On day 3, suppurative thrombophlebitis of the posterior neck was diagnosed by CT scan. The antimicrobials were changed from CTRX to ampicillin/sulbactam IV (12 g QID) to guard against the possibility

We report a rare case of necrotizing fasciitis of the abdominal wall caused by Hungatella effluvii and Streptococcus constellatus. Necrotizing fasciitis has high mortality, so early diagnosis and aggressive treatment are essential for good clinical outcome. Identification of the microbial contribution to these infections is crucial for targeted antibiotic treatment.

Introduction. Streptococcus constellatus are opportunistic microorganisms. When immunocompromised patients with concomitant systemic diseases are infected with S.constellatus, the bacteria may cause sepsis. Case study. A patient was admitted to hospital due to septic shock and multi-organ dysfunction in the course of neck phlegmon. The microbiological system identified S. constellatus in the patient who worked as a dog groomer. These facts confirmed that this aetiological factor may have caused such a serious infection because S. constellatus is a bacterial species found in dogs. It is most li

Group milleri streptococci that colonize the mouth and the upper airways are generally considered to be commensal. In combination with anaerobics, they are rarely responsible for brain abscesses in patients with certain predisposing factors. Mortality in such cases is high and complications are frequent. We present a case of fatal subdural empyema caused by Streptococcus constellatus and Actinomyces viscosus in a previously healthy 7-year-old girl.

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a severe infection of the endocardium and cardiac valves by multiple etiologic agents. Clinical presentation can be acute or subacute based on the host immunity and the causative agent's virulence. Although Streptococci are responsible for most community-acquired native valve bacterial IE, Streptococcus constellatus is an infrequent cause. S. constellatus can rarely infect prosthetic cardiac valves. A middle-aged white male with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus was transferred to our facility for suspected stroke with an initial presentation of acute en
