Protective role of the capsule and impact of serotype 4 switching on Streptococcus mitis.

The polysaccharide capsule surrounding Streptococcus pneumoniae is essential for virulence. Recently, Streptococcus mitis, a human commensal and a close relative of S. pneumoniae, was also shown to have a capsule. In this study, the S. mitis type strain switched capsule by acquisition of the serotype 4 capsule locus of S. pneumoniae TIGR4, following induction of competence for natural transformation. Comparison of the wild type with the capsule-switching mutant and with a capsule deletion mutant showed that the capsule protected S. mitis against phagocytosis by RAW 264.7 macrophages. This effe

Black Hairy Tongue Associated With Linezolid Treatment for Olecranon Bursitis Due to Streptococcus salivarius and Streptococcus mitis.

A 63-year-old female presented with acute, atraumatic posterior elbow pain. She was found to have infectious olecranon bursitis with resistant bacteria. Her treatment was complicated by a penicillin allergy, necessitating the use of linezolid, which was further complicated by the rare black hairy tongue (BHT) side effect of linezolid. Despite the visible discoloration and associated pain from BHT, the patient continued linezolid to treat her bursal infection. She recovered from the bursitis and linezolid side effects after completion, supporting that immediate withdrawal is not necessary for t

Identification of Streptococcus pneumoniae and other Mitis streptococci: importance of molecular methods.

The Mitis group of streptococci includes an important human pathogen, Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) and about 20 other related species with much lower pathogenicity. In clinical practice, some representatives of these species, especially Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae and Streptococcus mitis, are sometimes mistaken for S. pneumoniae based on the results of classical microbiological methods, such as optochin susceptibility and bile solubility. Several various molecular approaches that address the issue of correct identification of pneumococci and other Mitis streptococci have been pro

[Crystalline keratopathy: an infrequent corneal infection produced by the Streptococcus mitis group].

The objective of this report is to describe a case of crystalline keratopathy caused by the Streptococcus mitis group corresponding to a patient who attended hospital for discomfort in her right eye. The ophthalmological examination showed an interrupted stitch of 10-0 nylon suture without tension and with attached mucus secretions. The loose suture was removed under aseptic conditions. Moxifloxacin 0.5 % eye drops were topically indicated. The treated eye successfully epithelialized and evolved favorably. However, after 15 days, a white tree-shaped infiltrate developed. A corneal sample was t

A case of fulminant peritonitis caused by Streptococcus mitis in a patient on peritoneal dialysis.

A 54-year-old woman on peritoneal dialysis (PD) was hospitalized with peritonitis with a high body temperature, abdominal pain and cloudy peritoneal fluid. She progressively fell into septic-like shock within only 6 hours after onset. The causative bacteria were Streptococcus mitis (S. mitis), part of the normal flora of oral cavity, intestine, female genial tract and upper respiratory tract. S. mitis shows pathogenicity for diseases such as endocarditis, brain abscesses and sepsis in children with malignancy or transplantation. However, S. mitis rarely shows severe pathogenic responses in adu

Rare Postoperative Pelvic Lymphocyst Infection by Streptococcus mitis/oralis: A Case Study.

Lymphatic cyst with infection is caused by interruption of lymphatic vessels during para-aortic lymphnode dissection in patients with gynecological malignancies. It is generally considered that the infection is caused by bacteria invading through the lower limb and perineal wound, but the pathogenic factors of most lymphatic cysts are not clear. Our literature search revealed no previously reported cases similar to ours, in which a lymphatic cyst infection resulted from a co-infection with Streptococcus mitis/oralis (S. mitis/oralis) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae). A woman of 61 yea

Neonatal conjunctivitis due to uncommon pathogen Streptococcus mitis/oralis: a case report.

Neonatal conjunctivitis (NC), historically attributed to Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is now known to be caused by various pathogens, including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, and Chlamydia trachomatis. Although viridans group streptococci are generally regarded as commensal organisms, they may cause opportunistic conjunctival infections. Here, we present a case of NC caused by Streptococcus mitis/oralis, a member of the Mitis group of viridans group streptococci. A 15-day-old female neonate presented with bilateral severe eyelid edema and moderate hemopurulent discharge that precluded anterior segme

Human Serum Supplementation Promotes Streptococcus mitis Growth and Induces Specific Transcriptomic Responses.

Streptococcus mitis is a normal member of the human oral microbiota and a leading opportunistic pathogen causing infective endocarditis (IE). Despite the complex interactions between S. mitis and the human host, understanding of S. mitis physiology and its mechanisms of adaptation to host-associated environments is inadequate, especially compared with other IE bacterial pathogens. This study reports the growth-promoting effects of human serum on S. mitis and other pathogenic streptococci, including S. oralis, S. pneumoniae, and S. agalactiae. Using transcriptomic analyses, we identified that,

Streptococcus mitis sepsis in bone marrow transplant patients receiving oral antimicrobial prophylaxis.

PURPOSE: Streptococcal infection has increasingly become a problem in neutropenic patients. We report on an outbreak of Streptococcus mitis sepsis in six bone marrow transplant patients receiving oral antimicrobial prophylaxis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed an epidemiologic study of all patients in our bone marrow transplant program from 1986 to 1988. The hospital and microbiology records for all patients were reviewed. All bone marrow patients were treated according to specified protocols, including an oral prophylactic antimicrobial regimen that was changed in late 1987 from vancomycin

Lumbar vertebral diskitis-osteomyelitis with mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysm caused by Streptococcus mitis.

Vertebral osteomyelitis is a well-documented disease entity in literature with various known etiologies. However, vertebral diskitis-osteomyelitis secondary to an infected aortic aneurysm is an uncommon and life-threatening complication. We present the case of a 65-year-old male patient who presented with chronic low back pain that acutely worsened for 1 to 1.5 months and was diagnosed with vertebral diskitis-osteomyelitis secondary to a contiguous infection from an adjacent mycotic aortic aneurysm. To our knowledge, this is one of the few cases reported of vertebral diskitis-osteomyelitis sec

Low penicillin susceptibility in Streptococcus mitis/oralis from bloodstream infections in pediatric populations.

UNLABELLED: Streptococcus mitis/oralis can cause invasive diseases, including bloodstream infections. However, existing research primarily focuses on specific populations, and limited studies have been conducted on the prevalence of bloodstream infection caused by S. mitis/oralis across the entire pediatric population. Therefore, clinical data of S. mitis/oralis isolated from blood samples at Children's Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, during the period 2019-2023 were collected retrospectively to provide a comprehensive understanding of the clinical characteristics and drug re

A Case of Urinary Tract Infection Caused by Multidrug Resistant Streptococcus mitis/oralis.

S. mitis/oralis has been previously reported in isolated cases of bacterial endocarditis and liver abscesses. Its presence in urine is generally considered a contaminant. A 66-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital due to recurrent chest tightness and four-year history of exertional dyspnea. On the second day of admission, the patient presented with urgent and frequent urination, as well as dysuria. Both initial and subsequent urine cultures showed S. mitis/oralis infection, with polymorphonuclear leukocyte phagocytosis observed in the second sample. MALDI-TOF results confirmed the

Does Streptococcus mitis, a neonatal oropharyngeal bacterium, influence the pathogenicity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa?

Microorganisms in a biofilm might promote or suppress each other. We previously found that Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) and the normal colonized bacteria in the oropharynx, Streptococcus mitis (S. mitis), were the most common bacteria in the biofilm found on newborns' endotracheal tubes. Here, we found that S. mitis enhanced the adhesion and biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa. Furthermore, it alleviated the immune response induced by P. aeruginosa. These findings remind us that we should not ignore the role of traditionally viewed non-pathogenic bacteria in biofilms and provide new i

Effect of Surface Modification of a Dental Composite on the Adhesion of Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans: An In Vitro Study.

Adhesion of different microorganisms to the surface of dental materials has generated significant interest since one of the most important requirements of biomaterials to be considered successful is their ability to withstand the damage caused by microorganisms that may lead to failure and the onset of different pathologies, such as caries. In vitro testing has demonstrated that surface modification is an alternative approach to reduce the adhesion of microorganisms to surfaces. The objective of this work was to assess the adhesion of Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albi

Evolution of penicillin resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae; the role of Streptococcus mitis in the formation of a low affinity PBP2B in S. pneumoniae.

Penicillin-resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae possess forms of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) that have a low affinity for penicillin compared to those from penicillin-sensitive strains. PBP genes from penicillin-resistant isolates are very variable and have a mosaic structure composed of blocks of nucleotides that are similar to those found in PBP genes from penicillin-sensitive isolates and blocks that differ by up to 21%. These chromosomally encoded mosaic genes have presumably arisen following transformation and homologous recombination with PBP genes from a number of closel

Streptococcus mitis infective endocarditis in a patient with ventricular septal defect and orthodontic appliances.

We describe a case of a girl in a remote and rural location in Scotland with a perimembranous ventricular septal defect and orthodontic appliances, who developed right-sided infective endocarditis from Streptococcus mitis due to abrasion of the oral mucosa from the arch wire following its adjustment in the dental clinic.Fitting and adjustment of orthodontic appliances are not considered to be high-risk dental procedures and antibiotic prophylaxis is not recommended even for patients at highest risk for infective endocarditis.

Bacterial meningitis due to the Streptococcus mitis group in children with cerebrospinal fluid leak.

The Streptococcus mitis group constitutes a part of the oral flora in humans and has been reported to cause infective endocarditis, brain abscesses, sepsis, pneumonia, and peritonitis. However, the S. mitis group rarely causes meningitis in children. We experienced a case of bacterial meningitis due to the S. mitis group in a 14-year-old girl with Gorham-Stout disease undergoing treatment with sirolimus for skull base osteolysis and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak. Antibiotic treatment was initiated with linezolid and levofloxacin due to allergies against β-lactam antibiotics. On the third trea
