Very few Streptococcus suis infections in humans have been reported in Canada, although the condition is frequent in pigs. Meningitis, often accompanied by severe hearing loss, is the most common clinical manifestation. The disease is an occupational illness affecting persons in contact with pigs and may be underdiagnosed because of misidentification of the responsible bacterium. Since Quebec is the leading province for swine production in Canada, physicians and microbiologists should be aware of this infection, especially when a streptococcal meningitis is diagnosed in swine workers. The firs

A 51-year-old abattoir worker became ill with high fever and was admitted to hospital late in the evening, where he died 4 h later. Smears of peripheral blood taken 7 h after death showed numerous cocci. Cultures of the blood grew beta-hemolytic streptococci exhibiting the biochemical properties of Streptococcus suis II. A complete autopsy with extensive microscopical studies showed numerous bacteria in small vessels of several organs, but no bacterial colonisation of tissues, meningitis, or other relevant lesions were found. The group R antigen of the bacteria could be demonstrated by immunof

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis is a major porcine pathogen that can cause severe systemic infection in humans. The common clinical features include meningitis, septicemia, purulent arthritis, and oftentimes deafness. However, ocular inflammation is very rare.
METHODS: We report the case of endogenous endophthalmitis, meningitis, and septicemia caused by S. suis. The patient received 2 months of systemic antibiotics therapy, intravitreal vancomycin, and vitrectomy combining phacoemulsification with intraocular lens without silicone oil-filled.
RESULTS: The result with the best-corrected visua

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis is an emerging zoonotic pathogen, and causes sepsis and meningitis in humans. Although sequence type (ST) 1 and ST104 strains are capable of causing sepsis, ST1 strains commonly cause meningitis. In this study, we investigated the role of suilysin, a member of cholesterol-dependent cytolysins, in differential pathogenicity between ST1 and ST104 strains.
METHODS: The levels of transcription and translation of the sly gene and messenger RNA of both ST strains were compared by means of quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. Survival rates and

Streptococcus suis, a swine pathogen that causes zoonotic infections in Europe and Asia, has increasingly been observed in South America. We reviewed all available reports from the continent and identified S. suis cases in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, French Guiana, and Uruguay. We also identified 8 novel infections from Argentina, bringing the total documented human cases in South America to 47. We reclassified 1 previously reported infection as S. parasuis. Among the 47 S. suis cases, 40 (85%) patients had meningitis, 2 (4%) had toxic shock-like illness, 2 (4%) had nonshock sepsis, 1 (2%) had a

Streptococcus suis is an important bacterial pathogen that affects the global pig industry. The immunosuppressive nature of S. suis infection is recognized, and our previous research has confirmed thymus atrophy with a large number of necrotic cells. In this current work, we aimed to uncover the role of pyroptosis in cellular necrosis in thymic cells of S. suis-infected mice. Confocal microscopy revealed that S. suis activated the M1 phenotype and primed pyroptosis in the macrophages of atrophied thymus. Live cell imaging further confirmed that S. suis could induce porcine alveolar macrophage

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus suis is one of the porcine pathogens that have recently emerged as a pathogen capable of causing zoonoses in some humans. Patients infected with S. suis can present with sepsis, meningitis, or arthritis. Compared to common pathogens, such as Meningococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae, S. suis infections in humans have been reported only rarely.
METHODS: This case report described a 57-year-old man who presented with impaired consciousness and fever following several days of backache. He was a butcher who worked in an abattoir and had wounde

Streptococcus suis is a pathogen that causes invasive infections in humans and pigs. In this study, 448 S. suis isolates recovered from human infections in Thailand were characterized with regard to their antimicrobial susceptibility and antimicrobial resistance genes, including, for non-penicillin-susceptible isolates, sequence analyses of five genes encoding penicillin-binding proteins (pbp1a, pbp1b, pbp2a, pbp2b, and pbp2x). All 448 isolates were susceptible to cefepime and ceftriaxone, whereas 99.6%, 91.7%, and 72.9% of the isolates were susceptible to levofloxacin, penicillin, and chloram

Streptococcus suis, a prevalent porcine pathogen, may sporadically cause infections in humans, and has recently emerged as a cause of zoonoses in some professionals. The aim of this article was to review available data on epidemiology, etiopathogenesis, diagnostics, and management of the most common form of S. suis infection, purulent meningitis. Literature data show that S. suis is an important etiological factor of purulent meningitis, especially in subjects being occupationally exposed to contact with pigs and/or pork meat. Owing to growing incidence of S. suis meningitis, a history of such

Streptococcus suis is an emerging agent of zoonotic bacterial meningitis in Asia. We describe the epidemiology of S. suis cases and clinical signs and microbiological findings in persons with meningitis in Bali, Indonesia, using patient data and bacterial cultures of cerebrospinal fluid collected during 2014-2017. We conducted microbiological assays using the fully automatic VITEK 2 COMPACT system. We amplified and sequenced gene fragments of glutamate dehydrogenase and recombination/repair protein and conducted PCR serotyping to confirm some serotypes. Of 71 cases, 44 were confirmed as S. sui

Streptococcus suis is a major Gram-positive swine pathogen associated with a wide variety of diseases in pigs. The efforts made to develop vaccines against this pathogen have failed because of lack of common cross-reactive antigens against different serotypes. Nowadays the interest has moved to surface and secreted proteins, as they have the highest chances to raise an effective immune response because they are in direct contact with host cells and are really exposed and accessible to antibodies. In this work, we have performed a comparative immunosecretomic approach to identify a set of immun

BACKGROUND: In the Netherlands, Streptococcus suis is a rare cause of meningitis. Over the past few years, the number of reported cases worldwide has increased. The bacterium is mainly isolated in pigs, but humans can also become infected.
CASE DESCRIPTION: At the Emergency Department, a 60-year-old man presented with headache, confusion, fever and nuchal rigidity. He worked at a meat factory. Laboratory testing showed abnormalities linked to bacterial meningitis. S. suis was cultured from blood and cerebrospinal fluid. The patient was treated with dexamethasone, ceftriaxone and later benzylp

Eight cases of Streptococcus suis (S. suis) infection between 1993-1999 were retrospectively studied. There were 6 cases of meningitis and 2 cases of endocarditis. Acute meningitis with early sensorineural hearing loss was the characteristic feature and the most common presentation of S. suis infection. S. suis endocarditis is a rare presentation in Thailand. This organism was often mistaken for Streptococcus pneumoniae or Streptococcus viridans. In this study, this was true in five cases in whom S. suis was identified later. However, the rapid diagnosis of S. suis meningitis may rely on Gram

Streptococcus suis type 2 was evaluated for hemolysin production. Supernatants of S. suis type 2 grown in Todd-Hewitt broth were assayed for hemolytic activity by a photometric assay. Twenty-two additional serotypes of S. suis (1,3 to 22, and 1/2) were evaluated for hemolysin production; nine of them (1/2, 1, 4, 5, 14, 15, 17, 19, and 20) were positive. The effects of temperature, atmosphere, centrifugation, sonication, chemicals, bovine serum albumin, fetal calf serum, and enzymes on S. suis type 2 hemolysin activity were studied. Maximum hemolysis occurred after incubation in RPMI 1640 mediu

The detection and identification of Streptococcus suis type 2 in 8.1% of 347 pig herds of southwestern Ontario revealed that the infection is widespread in this area. A herd suspected to be infected showed a carrier rate of 9.7% among the 62 animals sampled. These subclinical carriers represent a potential source of infection for slaughterhouse workers. From studies of contamination of hands and knives, it was concluded that eviscerators involved in removing the larynx and lungs from the carcasses have a significantly higher (p less than or equal to 0.05) risk of exposure to Streptococcus suis

Streptococcus suis has been widely reported as a pathogen in animals, especially pigs. In terms of human health implications, it has been characterized as a zoonosis associated with the consumption of pork products and occupational exposure, particularly in Southeast Asian countries. Here, we present a rare case of human S. suis infection in Brazil, diagnosed in an older adult swine farmer, a small rural producer residing in the semi-arid region of Bahia, Brazil.
