Phenotypic and molecular assessment of antimicrobial resistance profile of airborne Staphylococcus spp. isolated from flats in Kraków.

Bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus were isolated from air sampled from living spaces in Kraków (Poland). In total, 55 strains belonging to the genus Staphylococcus were isolated from 45 sites, and 13 species of coagulase-negative staphylococci were identified. The species composition of studied airborne microbiota contains Staphylococcus species that are rarely infectious to humans. Most commonly isolated species comprised S. hominis and S. warneri. The disk-diffusion tests showed that the collected isolates were most frequently resistant to erythromycin. The PCR technique was employed to se

Clinical microbiology and infectious diseases - 11th European Congress. 1-4 April 2001, Istanbul, Turkey.

This report covers the four different sessions of the congress. All sessions included the presentation of papers about treatment of respiratory tract infections (RTIs). RTIs account for 25% of all the community-acquired infections and are the second most frequent among nosocomial infections after urinary tract infections. Recent years have witnessed a great increase in resistance to antibiotics among pathogens causing RTIs. These changes have rendered several 'classical' antibiotics less effective in this indication. The drug industry has collectively made a great effort to develop new antibio

[Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Dakar].

This study was carried out at the Fann University Hospital Center in Dakar, Senegal between 1994 and 1996. The purpose was to assess the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and to propose alternative treatments. A total of 149 stains of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from a variety of clinical specimens. Sensitivity to various antibiotics was tested by the disc diffusion technique (anti-biogram). Resistance to methicillin was evaluated by the oxacillin disc diffusion technique on Mueller-Hinton agar containing 5% NaCl. The prevalence of methicillin resistance was 66.

A novel genomic island harbouring lsa(E) and lnu(B) genes and a defective prophage in a Streptococcus pyogenes isolate resistant to lincosamide, streptogramin A and pleuromutilin antibiotics.

A lincosamide-resistant and macrolide-susceptible phenotype has not been described to date in Streptococcus pyogenes [group A streptococcus (GAS)]. The aim of this study was to characterize a GAS isolate susceptible to macrolides but resistant to lincosamide, streptogramin A and pleuromutilin antibiotics. Antimicrobial susceptibility was tested using the microdilution broth method and the resistance phenotype was tested by D-test. The GAS2887HUB isolate was subjected to whole-genome sequencing. The isolate showed a positive Gots' test (clindamycin inactivation). Whole-genome sequencing reveale

Bioplastic accumulates antibiotic and metal resistance genes in coastal marine sediments.

The oceans are increasingly polluted with plastic debris, and several studies have implicated plastic as a reservoir for antibiotic resistance genes and a potential vector for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Bioplastic is widely regarded as an environmentally friendly replacement to conventional petroleum-based plastic, but the effects of bioplastic pollution on marine environments remain largely unknown. Here, we present the first evidence that bioplastic accumulates antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and metal resistance genes (MRGs) in marine sediments. Biofilms fouling ceramic, polyethylene

Vaginal carriage and antibiotic susceptibility profile of group B Streptococcus during late pregnancy in Ismailia, Egypt.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection has long been recognized as a frequent cause of morbidity and mortality in newborn infants. The purpose of this study was to determine the colonization rate with GBS and the antibiotic susceptibility profile in pregnant women attending Gynecological clinics in Egypt. One-hundred and fifty vaginal swabs were collected from pregnant women at 35-40 weeks of gestation. In comparison to culture, direct latex agglutination testing revealed 100% sensitivity and 93.75% specificity. Thirty-eight specimens (25.3%) were found to be positive for GBS. Each isolate was

Staphylococcal Resistance Patterns, blaZ and SCCmec Cassette Genes in the Nasopharyngeal Microbiota of Pregnant Women.

Antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus spp. colonising the nasopharynx can create risk factors of therapeutic treatment failure or prophylaxis in pregnant women. Resistance is mostly encoded on plasmids (e.g., blaZ gene for penicillinase synthesis) or chromosomes (e.g., mecA and mecC for methicillin resistance). The mecA gene is part of the chromosomal mec gene cassette (SCCmec), which is also located on the plasmid. The disc diffusion method for the selected drugs (beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones, streptogramins, aminoglicosides, macrolides, oxasolidinones, tetracyclines and other groups)

[Investigation of macrolide, lincosamide and streptogramin B resistance in Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from clinical samples by phenotypical and genotypical methods].

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common cause of both community and healthcare-associated infections. As staphylococci have developed resistance to various antibiotics, initially to penicillins then to methicillin and glycopeptides and have the ability to cause epidemics, they continue to be a major problem from past to present. Methicillin resistance gave rise to the use of alternative antibiotics such as macrolides, however worldwide development of macrolide resistance limited the use of these antibiotics. Macrolide resistance occurs either through target site modification (MLS(B) ph

Antibiotic use: present and future.

Antibiotics were initially viewed as "wonder drugs" primarily because they were introduced at a time when only surgical drainage or spontaneous cures were available to treat serious bacterial infections. During the five or six decades since their introduction, several classes of these drugs became available including sulfonamides and trimethoprim, penicillins, cephalosporins, chloramphenicol, tetracyclines, colimycins, macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins, rifamycins, glycopeptides, aminoglycosides, fluoroquinolones, oxazolidinones, glycylglycines, lipoglycopeptides, and variations on thes

Increased macrolide resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae in Slovakia may be linked to increased macrolide consumption.

OBJECTIVES: Given the widespread use of macrolide antibiotics and growing concerns over antimicrobial resistance, this study aimed to investigate recent trends in macrolide consumption in Slovakia and to determine the corresponding changes in Streptococcus pneumoniae resistance in a paediatric cohort. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 1,083 nasal swab cultures from children with recurrent respiratory infections and atopy, comparing two distinct 5-year periods: 2008-2012 and 2019-2023. Consumption data was based on the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reports.

Implications of multiple antimicrobial-resistant enterococci associated with the poultry environment.

Poultry are increasingly being associated with carriage of multiresistant organisms that may cause disease in humans. Among these organisms are the enterococci, not regarded as a common cause of hospital-acquired infections. The use of antimicrobials for growth promotion in poultry production envronments may facilitate the dissemination of resistance to Enterococcus spp. that have the potential to be clinically significant. To assess descriptively the degree of multiresistant enterococci in the poultry environment of the Delmarva (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia) East Coast region of the USA, litte

Exposure to cadmium induced gut antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and microbiota alternations of Babylonia areolata.

Cadmium (Cd) is widely distributed in aquatic environments and has multiple adverse effects on aquatic organisms such as the ivory shell (Babylonia areolata). However, its effects on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and gut microbiota of B. areolata remain unclear. In this study, we explored the effects of different concentrations (0, 0.03, 0.18 and 1.08 mg/L) of Cd on intestinal microbial communities and ARGs in B. areolata through 16S rRNA gene sequencing and high-throughput quantitative PCR. The results showed that the structure and diversity of ARGs and microbiota in B. areolata gut were

Mechanisms of drug resistance in Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pathogenic mycoplasma responsible for respiratory tract infections in humans, occurring worldwide in children and adults. This review briefly focuses on its antibiotic susceptibility profile and on the development of acquired resistance for this microorganism. The lack of a cell wall in mycoplasmas makes them intrinsically resistant to beta-lactams and to all antimicrobials which target the cell wall. Intrinsic resistance related to specific mycoplasma species concerns essentially the acrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin-ketolide (MLSK) antibiotic group. M. pneumoniae

[Antimicrobial mechanisms of action].

A large number of families and groups of antimicrobial agents are of clinical interest. The mechanisms by which compounds with antibacterial activity inhibit growth or cause bacterial death are varied and depend on the affected targets. The bacterial cell wall-a unique structure in most bacteria that is absent in eukaryotic cells-can be affected in several ways: at different stages of synthesis (fosfomycin, cycloserine) or transport (bacitracin, mureidomycins) of its metabolic precursors, or by a direct action on its structural organization (beta-lactams, glycopeptides). The main drugs affecti
