Copeptin concentrations during psychological stress: the PsyCo study.

OBJECTIVE: The prognostic/diagnostic biomarker copeptin, an arginine vasopressin surrogate, reflects physical stress. Whether copeptin concentration increases upon psychological stress is unknown. We investigated psychological stress effects on copeptin secretion in healthy volunteers and patients with central diabetes insipidus (DI). DESIGN: A prospective observational study was conducted to study the relation between copeptin concentration and psychological stress. METHODS: A total of 20 healthy adults (ten female) and eight patients with central DI (four female) underwent the Trier Social

Repeated psychological stress testing in stimulant-dependent patients.

Decreasing response to stress has been one goal of interventions aimed at reducing relapse to substances of abuse. A laboratory stress test that can be repeated would be helpful in testing the efficacy of interventions in decreasing the response to stress before more extensive trials are begun. The effects of two types of psychological stress tests, the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and a stress imagery test, on psychological, physiological, and hormonal responses (salivary cortisol and DHEA) were examined when each test was given twice to cocaine- or methamphetamine-dependent human subjects

Psychological stress in people with profound mental retardation.

Does emotional stress in people with profound mental retardation occur and does it result from simple stimuli of daily living? Can this be measured by recording vital signs? To obtain answers, the histories of stress and stress diseases, and the behavioral characteristics of 163 institutionalized adults with developmental disabilities were evaluated; vital signs, temperatures and bodily expressions of 35 subjects from this sample were monitored. All but two of the 35 subjects had elevations of heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate, core body temperature, and changes in peripheral temper

Psychologic trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder, and dermatology.

Psychologic trauma refers to events (such as sexual assault, major earthquake, or plane crashes) that overwhelm an individual's capacity to cope. Psychologic trauma can result in chronic and recurring dermatologic symptoms that persist after the trauma subsides. Examples are cutaneous sensory flashbacks (which may be fragments of the sensory component of the traumatic experience), autonomic hyperarousal (with symptoms such as profuse sweating or flare-up of an underlying stress-reactive dermatosis), conversion symptoms (such as numbness, pain, or other medically unexplained cutaneous symptoms)

Modulation of neutrophil apoptosis by psychological stress and glucocorticoid.

Neutrophils play a pivotal role in host defense against bacterial infection, however, these cells may have a harmful effect on normal tissues under certain pathological conditions. We demonstrate here that apoptosis of these cells is modulated by psychophysical stress and its related hormones, suggesting that psychoneural systems may exert an effect on host defense through modulating neutrophil survival.

Psychological Stress and Heart Disease: Fact or Folklore?

For at least a few centuries, if not millennia, psychological stress has been popularly believed to contribute to heart disease. Does psychological stress really contribute to heart disease? Are anecdotal, patient, and lay press reports that angina, heart attack, and even cardiac death are caused by stress based on fact, or are they just folklore? In this review, the study data supporting associations between stress and cardiovascular risk, as well as potential mechanisms by which psychological stress might contribute to heart disease and precipitate myocardial ischemia and infarction, are cri

Chronic psychological stress induces vascular inflammation in rabbits.

Psychological stress is associated with a systemic inflammatory response. It is unclear, however, whether psychological stress contributes to vascular inflammation. Here, we examined the effects of unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) on vascular inflammation in rabbits. One hundred rabbits were randomly divided into control and stress groups. UCMS was induced by a set of defined adverse conditions applied in a shuffled order for 4, 8, 12, or 16 weeks, and rabbits were killed 24 h after the end of the UCMS protocol. Expression of different inflammatory molecules was analyzed by real-time p

A review of psychological debriefing after extreme stress.

Preventive intervention after exposure to traumatic events is a subject of increasing interest among mental health professionals. Psychological debriefing, which aims to reduce the risk of posttraumatic stress disorder and other psychopathological sequelae of traumatic experiences, is an example of such an intervention. The authors review the history of psychological debriefing and examine its efficacy. They conclude that psychological debriefing might be an effective intervention after extreme stress, although more support from controlled studies is required.

Production of fetal asphyxia by maternal psychological stress.

Several lines of evidence indicate that maternal psychological stress leads to adverse pregnancy outcome in rhesus monkey. Chronic anxiety causes an increased stillbirth rate, fetal growth retardation, and altered placental morphology. On another time scale, lightening of maternal anesthesia during surgery produces an impaired fetal oxygenation while re-institution of anesthesia ameliorates the fetal asphyxia. The present study, for the first time, demonstrates a relationship between specific episodes of meternal psychological stress and exacerbation of fetal asphyxia in utero. Eight term preg

Psychological stress and the longitudinal progression of subclinical atherosclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: In a midlife sample of adults, the present study tested the extent to which changes in psychological stress relate to the progression of subclinical cardiovascular disease over multiple years and explored the potential moderating role of cardiometabolic risk. METHOD: Participants were screened to exclude those with clinical cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, and other chronic illnesses, as well as those taking psychotropic, cardiovascular, lipid, and glucose control medications. At baseline (N = 331) and then again at follow-up an average of 3 years later (N = 260), participan

Psychological and Physiological Stress in Hens With Bone Damage.

Abnormalities in bone development in humans and non-humans can lead to impaired physical and psychological health; however, evidence is lacking regarding the role of individual psychosocial factors in the development of poor bone conditions. Addressing this lack of knowledge, we used low-productive laying hens (n = 93) and assessed behavioral responses to an open-field test [at 17, 18, 29, 33 weeks of age (wa)], an aerial predator test (at 39 wa), and a social reinstatement test (at 42 wa). Bone condition was assessed using a palpation technique on five occasions (at 16, 29, 33, 45, 58 wa), wi

Chronic Psychological Stress as a Risk Factor of Osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis, the most common metabolic skeletal disease, is characterized by decreased bone mass and deteriorated bone quality, leading to increased fracture risk. With the aging of the population, osteoporotic fracture is an important public health issue. Organisms are constantly exposed to various stressful stimuli that affect physiological processes. Recent studies showed that chronic psychological stress is a risk factor for osteoporosis by various signaling pathways. The purpose of this article is to review the recent progress of the association between chronic psychological stress and o

Paroxysmal hypertension: the role of stress and psychological factors.

This paper reviews the limited literature on paroxysmal hypertension. A case report describes the clinical picture frequently seen in specialty hypertension practice, a patient with paroxysmal or intermittent hypertension who proves not to have a pheochromocytoma. The variety of diagnostic labels given to these patients is reviewed, including pseudopheochromocytoma, panic attacks, and hyperventilation syndrome. The clinical features, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of these syndromes are outlined. It is proposed that successful management of these patients may be best achieved by collabora

Implications of psychological research on stress and technological accidents.

Psychological research on stress, disasters, and human-made technological accidents have important implications for policy, planning, and legal resolution of situations caused by environmental hazards. The incidence of technological accidents and catastrophes seems to have increased, and the biobehavioral sequelae of such accidents among victims have implications for mental and physical health as well as for intervention and prevention. In this article, research on the long-term effects of human-made disasters is discussed in the context of contributions that psychological research and theory

Stress and psychologic and environmental factors in functional dyspepsia.

Patients with functional dyspepsia are a heterogeneous group in whom psychologic and environmental factors and stress may contribute to their reports of symptoms. There is no unique personality profile in patients with functional dyspepsia. Although they have more anxiety, neuroticism, and depression than healthy subjects, their personality scores are no different than other patients with chronic abdominal pain syndromes, be they organic or functional in nature. Social factors including older age, male gender, unmarried status, and social incongruity are associated with increased frequency and

The psychological health and stress of pilots in a labor dispute.

This study investigated the psychological stress and psychiatric symptomatology in a representative sample of pilots involved in a labor dispute with management. Standardized epidemiological psychometric instruments revealed that one quarter of the pilots could be labelled "psychologically at risk" showing elevated symptoms of anger-hostility, paranoia, and obsessive-compulsiveness. A certain combination of personality scores with stress reactions was found to correctly classify pilots who were healthy vs. "at risk" with 92% accuracy. Interviews with pilots revealed both general causes of stre

Exposure to negative acts at work, psychological stress reactions and physiological stress response.

OBJECTIVES: The overall aim of the study was to test the association between exposure to negative acts at work, psychological stress-reactions and cortisol secretion and whether some negative acts are more detrimental to health than others. METHODS: A questionnaire study included 1010 respondents from 55 workplaces. Three saliva samples collected from the participants at awakening, 30 min later and at 20:00 during a workday were analysed for cortisol concentrations. Negative acts were measured using a modified version of the revised Negative Acts Questionnaire (to measure bullying behaviour).
