Oxidative stress markers in patients with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Recent study data support the role of oxidative stress in diverse psychiatric disorders. Oxidative stress results from an oxidant/antioxidant imbalance, an excess of oxidants and/or a depletion of antioxidants. There are numerous studies that indicate that free radicals (FRs) damage neurons, and then play an important role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and depression. Active oxygen can cause considerable damage and disrupt the important physiological functions of proteins, lipids, enzymes and DNA. The aim of our study was to investigate the possible differences in the concentration o

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder/Developmental Trauma Disorder/Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Complementary and Integrative Medicine/Functional Medicine.

Response to PTSD treatments differ based on the age the abuse occurred, the type of abuse, and the chronicity of the abuse. Even when modifications to treatment are made based on the developmental age when the abuse occurred, therapies may be insufficient. In addition, when diagnostic criteria are modified to identify more children, some children continue to escape detection. Developmental Trauma Disorder, (akin to the RDoC), may be more suitable to identify epigenetic and inflammatory effects of early abuse that may be responsible for the nonresponsive to treatment. The influence of traumatic brain injury on acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder following motor vehicle accidents.

This study compared the acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom profiles in motor vehicle accident survivors who sustained a mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) or no TBI. Consecutive adult patients who sustained a MTBI (n = 79) and no TBI (n = 92) were assessed for acute stress disorder within 1 month of their trauma and reassessed for PTSD (MTBI: n = 63; non-TBI; n = 72) 6-months post-trauma. Comparable rates of acute stress disorder and PTSD were reported in MTBI and non-TBI patients. Intrusive memories and fear and helplessness in response to the trauma were

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in People with Long COVID, ME/CFS, and Controls.

BACKGROUND: Prevalences of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) have not previously been compared between individuals with long coronavirus disease (COVID) and individuals with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and healthy age-matched controls. For these reasons, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of PTSD and CPTSD in individuals with long COVID (n = 21) and ME/CFS (n = 20) and age-matched controls (n = 20). METHODS: A case-case-control approach was employed; participants completed the International Traum

Cannabis update: Anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The development of anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is complex. Both delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are of potential therapeutic use. Evidence suggests that cannabis has a beneficial effect on neural circuitry involved in fear regulation. In the United States, cannabis is considered either medical or recreational and can contain pure THC or CBD or any combination thereof. The numerous cannabis compounds of various administration routes, with variable pharmacokinetics, further affect the cannabis conundrum. Despite being federally unregulated

Acute stress disorder as a predictor of post-traumatic stress disorder in physical assault victims.

The authors' objective was to examine the ability of acute stress disorder (ASD) and other trauma-related factors in a group of physical assault victims in predicting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) 6 months later. Subjects included 214 victims of violence who completed a questionnaire 1 to 2 weeks after the assault, with 128 participating in the follow-up. Measures included the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire, the Trauma Symptom Checklist, and the Crisis Support Scale. Twenty-two percent met the full PTSD diagnosis and 22% a subclinical PTSD diagnosis. Previous lifetime shock due to a trau

Pharmacotherapy for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a prevalent and disabling disorder. Evidence that PTSD is characterised by specific psychobiological dysfunctions has contributed to a growing interest in the use of medication in its treatment. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of medication for reducing PTSD symptoms in adults with PTSD. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL; Issue 11, November 2020); MEDLINE (1946-), Embase (1974-), PsycINFO (1967-) and PTSDPubs (all available years) either directly or via the Cochrane Common Mental Disor

Glecaprevir/Pibrentasvir for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a common condition with few effective medication treatments. Glecaprevir/Pibrentasvir (GLE/PIB), a treatment for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, demonstrated possible evidence of effectiveness for PTSD in an epidemiological study. We sought to determine if GLE/PIB decreases the symptoms of PTSD and modulates inflammation. METHODS: An uncontrolled open trial was conducted at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction Vermont. Participants were veterans with PTSD and no HCV infection. Ten participants received Glecaprevir 10

Post-traumatic stress disorder in psychedelic research.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a severe psychiatric condition that develops after exposure to trauma such as combat, natural disasters, or assault. It is characterized by re-experiencing trauma, avoidance, hyperarousal, and negative alterations in cognition and mood. Since its formal inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-III in 1980, PTSD has been extensively researched. Current guideline-recommended treatments include trauma-focused psychotherapies and medications. However, a significant proportion of patients show limited response to these tre

Imaging dissociation in post-traumatic stress disorder.

Symptom provocation paradigms have been successfully developed to identify the neural correlates associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, especially dissociative behaviours, but have critical limitations. Transiently stimulating the sympathetic nervous system and/or the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis can enhance the stress response to symptom provocation and would help identify targets for personalised interventions.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: Focus on Neuroinflammation.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), gaining increasing attention, is a multifaceted psychiatric disorder that occurs following a stressful or traumatic event or series of events. Recently, several studies showed a close relationship between PTSD and neuroinflammation. Neuroinflammation, a defense response of the nervous system, is associated with the activation of neuroimmune cells such as microglia and astrocytes and with changes in inflammatory markers. In this review, we first analyzed the relationship between neuroinflammation and PTSD: the effect of stress-derived activation of the hyp

Secondary Traumatic Stress Disorder in the Surgical Profession.

INTRODUCTION: The psychological impact of treating individuals who have undergone severely traumatic experiences is known as secondary traumatic stress (STS). It has been well characterized by mental health therapists and social workers. Analysis of STS in surgeons and medical students is limited to merely a handful of studies, with only 1 paper describing STS in trauma surgeons and two describing STS in medical students. This review aims to provide a comprehensive account of existing work on STS, identify gaps in knowledge of STS in surgeons and medical students, and distinguish STS from othe

Sensory alterations in post-traumatic stress disorder.

PTSD is characterized by difficulties in accurately evaluating the threat value of sensory stimuli. While the role of canonical fear and threat neural circuitry in this ability has been well studied, recent lines of evidence suggest a need to include more emphasis on sensory processing in the conceptualization of PTSD symptomology. Specifically, studies have demonstrated a strong association between variability in sensory processing regions and the severity of PTSD symptoms. In this review, we summarize recent findings that underscore the importance of sensory processing in PTSD, in addition t

Birth order and post-traumatic stress disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the birth order of patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and adjustment disorder (AD) with population norms. METHOD: 83 PTSD patients and 104 AD control patients from a psychiatric trauma clinic were diagnosed according to DCR-10 guidelines. A family history was taken as to number of siblings, and their birth order. We compared the distribution of birth order for each patient group against birth order distributions expected by chance for the same years of birth using UK population-level birth order from the Office for National Statistics. RESULTS: Psychiat

Post-traumatic stress disorder: present and future.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and acute stress disorder (ASD) differ from almost every other psychiatric diagnosis in that they may only be diagnosed with reference to an aetiological event - an external traumatic stressor. ASD occurs immediately after the stressor and is comparatively short-lived, while PTSD is a prolonged abnormal response that may take months to develop. The types of stressor leading to ASD and PTSD are identical and were intended to be tightly defined, involving a perceived threat of death, serious injury or loss of physical integrity. It is useful initially to dis
