West Nile (WNV) and Usutu (USUV) viruses are mosquito-borne flaviviruses. Thanks to their importance as zoonotic diseases, a regional plan for surveillance of Arboviruses was implemented in Emilia-Romagna in 2009. The province of Ferrara belongs to the Emilia-Romagna region, and it is an endemic territory for these viruses, with favorable ecological conditions for abundance of mosquitoes and wild birds. From 2015 to 2019, we collected 1842 dead-found birds at a wildlife rehabilitation center, which were analysed by three different PCRs for the detection of WNV and USUV genomes. August was char

Ocular trauma is a significant contributor to mortality in wild birds, particularly in owls. Despite the critical role of vision in survival, ocular biometric data for brown hawk-owls (Ninox scutulata) remain limited. This study establishes ultrasonographic reference values for ocular structures in the brown hawk-owl. Using B-mode ultrasonography, biometric parameters including corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, vitreous chamber depth, axial length of the globe, and pecten oculi height were measured in 64 eyes from 32 individuals (26 adults and 6 juveniles). Correlation

Thirteen owl species occur in Serbia, all legally protected, with several species considered endangered. Many populations have decline due to loss of breeding sites and hunting grounds. The long-eared owl (Asio otus) is a medium-sized owl distributed in northern part in Serbia (Vojvodina). A dead owl was admitted to Department of Forensic Veterinary Medicine, University of Belgrade. Necropsy revealed around 50 nematodes in the oral cavity, esophagus, and stomach. The worms were examined and measured by using light microscopy, photographed and morphologically analyzed leading to their identific

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants with bioaccumulative, biomagnifying and toxic potential, and largely unknown fate and health effects in terrestrial wildlife. In a contaminated area, we studied PFAS in a terrestrial food web including soil, mushrooms, berries, and wild-living herbivores (bank vole and two ungulate species) and a specialized predator (Tengmalm's owl). In addition, in voles, we studied potential PFAS-induced liver damage and infection with a zoonotic pathogen. Concentrations of PFAS in vole livers were among the highest reported in ter

We present the complete genome sequence of an aviadenovirus obtained by metagenomics from cloacal swabs taken from a free-living Eurasian scops owl (Otus scops, a small raptor distributed in Europe and several parts of Asia) in China. Thirty protein coding genes were predicted in this 40,239-bp-long genome, which encodes the largest fiber protein among all reported aviadenoviruses. The viral genome sequence is highly divergent, and the encoded proteins have an average of only 55% amino acid sequence identity to those of other adenoviruses. In phylogenetic analysis, the new owl virus grouped wi

During their annual migration, avian migrants alternate stopover periods, for refuelling, with migratory flight bouts. We hypothesise that European Nightjars (Caprimulgus europaeus) adapt their daily migration tactics in association with biomes. We tracked the autumn migration of 24 European Nightjars, from breeding populations in Mongolia, Belgium and UK, using GPS-loggers and multi-sensor data loggers. We quantified crepuscular and nocturnal migration and foraging probabilities, as well as daily travel speed and flight altitude during active migration in response to biomes. Nightjars adopt a

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of unilateral topical application of rocuronium bromide in scops owls.
ANIMALS STUDIED: Ten healthy adult scops owls.
PROCEDURES: Birds weighting between 82-111 g were enrolled. Complete physical and ophthalmic examinations were performed. Each animal received a single dose of 0.15 mg of rocuronium bromide (30 µL) in a randomly selected eye. Static pupillometric evaluations were performed before and after drug instillation at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes, in a room with fixed light intensity. Physical and ophthalmic examinations were carried o

An adult, male snowy owl ( Bubo scandiacus) was found down and unable to fly in western New York State. Physical examination and radiographs revealed a subacute, open wound and fractured major and minor metacarpals of the right wing. A minimal type II external skeletal fixator (ESF) device was placed on the right major metacarpal bone and the open wound was allowed to granulate and close. After evidence of bone union, the ESF device was removed. The owl performed auto-physiotherapy throughout the process and was released with sustained flight 2 months postoperatively. It was recaptured 7 weeks

A juvenile to young adult, male, great horned owl (Bubo virginianus,GHOW) was presented to the wildlife rehabilitation hospital at Lindsay Wildlife Museum (WRHLWM) due to trauma to the right patagium from barbed wire entanglement. On presentation, both corneas were irregular, dry, and no movement of the third eyelid was noted. A severe corneal enlargement/globoid appearance was the predominant ophthalmic feature. The fundus was normal in both eyes (OU). Over the course of several days, both corneas developed edema combined with further dessication at the ocular surface associated with diffuse

Western Burrowing Owls ( Athene cunicularia hypugaea) frequently occupy periurban areas, where they may be exposed to pest control agents. This short communication describes necropsy findings and detected brodifacoum rodenticide levels for four Western Burrowing Owls in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, US, 2013-15. Levels detected ranged from 0.077 mg/kg to 0.497 mg/kg. Brodifacoum, one of several second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides recently removed from the general consumer market, is still available for use by licensed pesticide applicators. Despite recent regulatory actions, second-gener

This study reports a case of multiple congenital malformations in a burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) rescued in southern Brazil. Clinical assessment revealed partial agenesis of the forelimbs, bilateral asymmetric syndactyly, and selective anonychia of the second digit in both pelvic limbs. Despite severe locomotor limitations and the inability to fly, the individual maintained a satisfactory body condition score, demonstrating the species' adaptive and behavioural capacity. The integrity of the epithelial tissues and the symmetry of the digital alterations support a teratogenic etiology, di

The current study aims to compare the morphological features of the oropharyngeal roof of the little owl ( Athene noctua ) and the domestic pigeon ( Columba livia domestica) by gross anatomy, morphometric measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and light microscopy. Ten heads of normal, healthy, and adult little owls and domestic pigeons were used in the current study as follows: seven heads for gross anatomical examination and light microscopy, and three for scanning electron microscopy. The oropharyngeal roof had a triangular appearance in both birds, was enlarged and broad in the little

Artificial light at night significantly alters the predictability of the natural light cycles that most animals use as an essential Zeitgeber for daily activity. Direct light has well-documented local impacts on activity patterns of diurnal and nocturnal organisms. However, artificial light at night also contributes to an indirect illumination of the night sky, called skyglow, which is rapidly increasing. The consequences of this wide-spread form of artificial night light on the behaviour of animals remain poorly understood, with only a few studies performed under controlled (laboratory) condi

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) influence predator populations and threaten the stability of ecosystems. Understanding the prevalence and impact of rodenticides in predators is crucial to inform conservation planning and policy. We collected dead birds of four nocturnal predatory species across differing landscapes: forests, agricultural, urban. Liver samples were analysed for eight ARs: three First Generation ARs (FGARs) and five SGARs (Second Generation ARs). We investigated interspecific differences in liver concentrations and whether landscape composition influenced this. FGARs were rarel

The powerful owl (Ninox strenua) is a threatened apex predator that consumes mainly arboreal marsupial prey. Low density populations reside in urban landscapes where their viability is tenuous. The catalyst for this research was the reported death of eight powerful owls around Melbourne, Australia, in less than one year (2020/2021). Eighteen deceased owls were toxicologically screened. We assessed toxic metals (Mercury Hg, Lead Pb, Cadmium Cd and Arsenic As) and anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) in liver (n = 18 owls) and an extensive range of agricultural chemicals in muscle (n = 14). Almost a

Owls are well adapted to nocturnal hunting. This includes vision tuned to low level light conditions, silent flight, and asymmetrical ears. Asymmetrical ears facilitate sound localization and evolved up to seven times independently in the evolutionary history of owls. However, there are also owl species with a crepuscular or diurnal lifestyle, like the little owl (Athene noctua), that have symmetrical ears as adults. Here we show that a small, but significant ear asymmetry occurs in the embryonic development of little owls, despite the presence of symmetrical ears in adults. In the asymmetric

We measured the auditory sensitivity of the barn owl (Tyto alba), using a behavioural Go/NoGo paradigm in two different age groups, one younger than 2 years (n = 4) and another more than 13 years of age (n = 3). In addition, we obtained thresholds from one individual aged 23 years, three times during its lifetime. For computing audiograms, we presented test frequencies of between 0.5 and 12 kHz, covering the hearing range of the barn owl. Average thresholds in quiet were below 0 dB sound pressure level (SPL) for frequencies between 1 and 10 kHz. The lowest mean threshold was -12.6 dB SPL at 8
