Overview of gait rehabilitation in stroke.

Stroke is the 2nd leading cause of death globally after ischaemic heart disease and is expected to rise more by 2030. The estimated incidence of stroke in Pakistan is about 250/100,000 individuals. Difficulty in walking is present in approximately 80% of stroke survivors. About a quarter of stroke survivors, even after receiving rehabilitation have residual gait impairments requiring assistance in activities of daily life. Almost half of stroke patients after being discharged will have episodes of fall, with majority of these falls occurring in activities like "turning". Gait is one of the key

Orthopedic rehabilitation of the stroke patient.

Rehabilitation of hemiplegic patients begins with setting reasonable functional goals and a treatment plan to reach them. During the initial illness an effort is made to begin range of motion exercising and positioning to prevent contractures. Transfer from bed to chair is recommended as soon as the patient's general condition permits.Upper extremity function depends on sensory and motor function as well as visual and central cerebral impairment. Spastic symptomatic contracture of the shoulder must be prevented by adequate orthopedic management of any musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis

Integrating Individuals With Stroke Into Cardiac Rehabilitation Following Traditional Stroke Rehabilitation: Promoting a Continuum of Care.

Following stroke, people are at high risk for repeat strokes and for complications related to coronary artery disease (CAD). Indeed, stroke … h aerobic and resistance training can help to prevent and reverse these health hazards. Traditional stroke rehabilitation programs face many barriers to providing exercise programming early post-stroke, such as lack of available therapy time and short length of stay, lack of equipment for exercise and assessments, and concerns for patient safety related to cardiac stat …

Therapeutic robots for post-stroke rehabilitation.

Stroke is a prevalent, severe, and disabling health-care issue on a global scale, inevitably leading to motor and cognitive deficits. It has become one of the most significant challenges in China, resulting in substantial social and economic burdens. In addition to the medication and surgical interventions during the acute phase, rehabilitation treatment plays a crucial role in stroke care. Robotic technology takes distinct advantages over traditional physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, and is increasingly gaining popularity in post-stroke rehabilitation. The use of reh…

Integrating Cardiac Rehabilitation in Stroke Recovery.

Stroke remains a top contributor to long-term disability in the United States and substantially limits a person's physical activity. Decreased cardiovascular capacity is a major contributing factor to activity limitations and is a significant health concern. Addressing the cardiovascular capacity of stroke survivors as part of poststroke management results in significant improvements in their endurance, functional recovery, and medical outcomes such as all-cause rehospitalization and mortality. Incorporation of a structured approach similar to the cardiac rehabilitation program, including aero

2: Rehabilitation of patients after stroke.

Stroke is the third highest cause of death and the leading cause of chronic disability in adults in Australia. Studies show clear advantages of treatment of patients in the acute phase of stroke in a dedicated stroke unit. Rehabilitation after stroke is a continuum, starting within days of stroke onset and ending only when it no longer produces any positive effect. More than half the 75% of patients who survive the first month after a stroke will require specialised rehabilitation. Effective rehabilitation relies on a coordinated, multidisciplinary team approach. Regular team meetings, as well

Stroke rehabilitation. Minimizing the functional deficits.

Stroke rehabilitation has evolved into a complex multidisciplinary team approach that aims to return the patient with significant neurologic and functional deficits to as independent and productive a lifestyle as possible. Stroke patients should be evaluated from a rehabilitation standpoint; disabilities should be assessed in terms of their impact on function at home and in the community, both in the vocational and in the avocational sphere, and specific rehabilitation needs should be identified. Rehabilitation is expensive; however, the cost of institutionalized care in a nursing home for a l…

Rehabilitation services received by stroke patients: the Auckland stroke study.

A study of the pattern of use of rehabilitation services by stroke survivors in the Auckland region (total population 829,545) found that in 1981-82 the majority of patients with functional motor deficit received, after early referral, a wide range of rehabilitation services. Patients with severe stroke, as measured by motor deficit, were more likely to be referred to rehabilitation services than patients with mild or moderate deficits; four-fifths of all patients with a persisting severe motor deficit were still receiving physiotherapy six months after the stroke. Up to one-third of patients

Rehabilitation of post-stroke aphasia in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia, a common consequence of stroke, which affects both communication and social functioning, and in turn, quality of life, is on the rise due to increases in stroke prevalence and survival rate. The rehabilitation of post-stroke aphasia primarily falls within the purview of speech-language pathology and research supports the effectiveness of such services. However, provision of aphasia rehabilitation services in sub-Saharan Africa is associated with challenges. AIMS: This study aimed to examine rehabilitation services for individuals with post-stroke aphasia in Ghana by explo

Rehabilitation in Pediatric Stroke: Cognition and Behavior.

Pediatric stroke is associated with a range of maladaptive cognitive and behavioral outcomes that often require targeted intervention. Despite increasing research on neuropsychological outcomes over the past decade, evidence for effective therapies and interventions for the most commonly reported cognitive and behavioral challenges is still limited. The most widely prescribed interventions address more overt deficits in sensorimotor and speech/language functions, yet interventions for higher-order cognitive, linguistic and behavioral deficits are notably less defined. Moreover, concepts of reh

Eye-acupuncture with rehabilitation therapy for stroke.

BACKGROUND: Stroke survivors are accompanied by dysfunctions, greatly declining their activities of daily living and bringing burden to families and societies. Although modern rehabilitation therapy has a systematic program in post-stroke motor rehabilitation, numbers of patients still recover slowly. Eye-acupuncture (EA), as an important type of acupuncture, has been widely applied effectively in rehabilitation of stroke for about 50 years. So we combine EA with modern rehabilitation which has achieved successful results. Therefore, we need to adopt an objective and accurate evaluation method

Brain plasticity and rehabilitation in stroke patients.

In recent years, our understanding of motor learning, neuroplasticity and functional recovery after the occurrence of brain lesion has grown significantly. Novel findings in basic neuroscience have provided an impetus for research in motor rehabilitation. The brain reveals a spectrum of intrinsic capacities to react as a highly dynamic system which can change the properties of its neural circuits. This brain plasticity can lead to an extreme degree of spontaneous recovery and rehabilitative training may modify and boost the neuronal plasticity processes. Animal studies have extended these find

[Rehabilitation of stroke patients with gait disturbance].

Abstract Most stroke patients who have lost the ability to walking hope to recover this walking ability. In such cases, generation of adaptive gait patterns and development of realistic walking systems could aid in the performance of various activities. It is reported that the adaptive gait control patterns are generated by various neural domains, including the cerebral cortex, brainstem, and spinal cord, and are modurated by the basal ganglia and cerebellum. Walking dysfunctions after stroke are caused by abnormal reactivity, perception, cognition, plan for the locomotion and its constitution
