When You Watch Your Team Fall Apart - Coaches' and Sport Psychologists' Perceptions on Causes of Collective Sport Team Collapse.

Collective team collapse occurs when multiple players of a sport team experience a sudden and extreme underperformance within a game and are unable to return to their initial performance level. The occurrence of such a team collapse event commonly leads to the loss of the game or championship. A recent study investigated athletes' perceptions of the phenomenon and proposed a process model of causes of collective sport team collapse. The main goal of this study was to apply this process model to the data collected from coaches and sport psychologists. A further goal was to explore differences i

Quantum Superpositions of Conscious States in a Minimal Integrated Information Model.

Could there be quantum superpositions of conscious states, as suggested by the Wigner's friend thought experiment? Mathematical theories of consciousness, notably integrated information theory (IIT), make this question more precise by associating physical systems with both quantitative amounts of consciousness and structural characterizations of conscious states. Motivated by a recent proposal that ties wave-function collapse to integrated information, we construct a simple quantum circuit that would, on that proposal, place a minimal system-a feedback dyad-into a superposition of states that

Influence of modified silica nanoparticles on phase behavior and structure properties of DPPC monolayers.

In this work, the effect of silica nanoparticles (NPs) adding to DPPC monolayer and the interaction between DPPC and silica nanoparticles are studied. Silica nanoparticles are prepared by microemulsion, meanwhile, DMDCS and APTES are used to modify silica NPs to get three types of modified silica NPs. These samples are mixed with DPPC to form mixed monolayer. By using the atomic force microscope (AFM), surface pressure-area and pressure-time isotherms, the effects of different hydrophilic-hydrophobic silica nanoparticles on the interface of lipid monolayer is analyzed. The data shows that the

Can a Covalent-Organic Framework Sustain Structural Integrity during Activation? Microscopic Insight from Molecular Simulation.

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as versatile nanoporous materials in a wide variety of domains. However, their practical applications are hindered by activation, as solvent evacuation may cause structural collapse. In this study, we investigate whether an imine-based COF can sustain structural integrity during activation by six different solvents (dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide, acetone, methanol, hexane, and perfluorohexane). From molecular simulation, nanocavity is observed to form in the COF upon solvent evacuation, thus inducing contractive stress. The magnitude of c

Monolayers of Linear Saturated Succinate Polyesters at Air-Liquid Interfaces.

The surface pressure-area isotherms at 25 °C are reported for some linear saturated polyesters spread as monolayers at air-aqueous interfaces. Monolayers of poly (ethylene succinate), poly (pentamethylene succinate), and poly (neopentyl succinate) were studied on distilled water and 0.01 N hydrochloric acid subphases. Poly (ethylene succinate) monolayers are in the expanded state and collapse at low surface pressures. Poly (pentamethylene succinate) monolayers are also expanded, but show no definite collapse, even at the highest surface pressures studied. Monolayers of poly (neopentyl succinat

Tissue-specified reconstruction modeling of the head and neck structure and its application in simulating airway obstruction.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of head and neck tissues has extensive clinical applications, but due to the complexity and variability of tissue structure, there is still a lack of a complete scheme to reconstruct the head and neck tissues. This study aims to establish a tissue-specified multi-directional cross-sectional image sequence construction method to capture diverse tissue contour information. METHODS: The image sequences that are most conducive to acquiring the boundary contours of the target tissue are constructed from 3D MRI images of the head and n

A Preliminary Study of the Automatic Classification of the Site of Airway Collapse in OSA patients Using Snoring Signals.

In this study we investigated if audio signals may carry information related to the site of obstruction of the upper airway. The information regarding the site of collapse could improve obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) treatment by allowing more individualized or structure-specific therapy. In this preliminary study, we developed an algorithm for automatically determining the site of collapse in 13 OSA patients through snoring analysis. Audio was recorded with a ceiling mounted microphone, simultaneously with full-night polysomnography during sleep. The surrogate measure of the site of airway co

Brachycephalic Syndrome.

Animals presenting with brachycephalic syndrome suffer from multilevel obstruction of the airways as well as secondary structural collapse. Stenotic nares, aberrant turbinates, nasopharyngeal collapse, soft palate elongation and hyperplasia, laryngeal collapse, and left bronchus collapse are being described as the most common associated anomalies. Rhinoplasty and palatoplasty as well as newer surgical techniques and postoperative care strategies have resulted in significant improvement of the prognosis even in middle-aged dogs.

The diagnosis and treatment of nasal valve collapse.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The nasal valve is a complex structure that can be weakened from effects of aging, surgery, and trauma. A variety of methods have been described to strengthen the nasal valve region and prevent or treat nasal obstruction, such as batten grafts, spreader grafts, butterfly grafts, flare sutures, and suspension sutures. They will be briefly discussed here, but the intent of this review is to highlight the new developments in the treatment nasal valve collapse that have appeared in the literature over the last few years. RECENT FINDINGS: Various surgical techniques and approach

Coordinated stress-structure self-organization in granular packing.

During quasistatic dynamics of granular systems, the stress and structure self-organize, but there is currently no quantitative measure or understanding of this phenomenon. Such an understanding is essential because local structural properties of the settled material are then correlated with the local stress, which calls into question existing linear theories of stress transmission in granular media. A method to quantify the local stress-structure correlations is necessary for addressing this issue and we present here such a method for planar systems. We then use it to analyze numerically seve

Differential expression of miR-195-5p in collapse of steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

BACKGROUND: Femoral head collapse is a key reference point for determining a treatment regimen of femoral head osteonecrosis. However, there are no effective preventive measures and the efficacy of hip-preserving surgery is unsatisfactory due to the unclear mechanism of collapse. This study aimed to identify and validate miRNAs differentially expressed in collapse and non-collapse areas of the osteonecrotic femoral head, and to predict the target genes and pathways of these miRNAs. RESULTS: Nine samples passed the quality control test. A total of 2085 differentially expressed miRNAs were dete

Stage 3 Kienböck's disease: reconstruction of the fractured lunate using a free vascularized iliac bone graft and external fixation.

Eighteen patients with stage 3 Kienböck's disease were treated by débridement of the necrotic core of the lunate and implantation of a free vascularized corticocancellous iliac bone. The wrist was stabilized with an external fixator during healing. The efficiency of the procedure for restoring the structure of the fractured lunate, preventing carpal collapse and improving the clinical outcome was assessed at a mean follow-up of 5 years. The graft became incorporated in the lunate in 16 of the 18 patients and no fracture of the reconstructed lunate or carpal collapse occurred in these cases. Th

Hold your horses: A comparison of human laryngomalacia with analogous equine airway pathology.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngomalacia is the most common cause of stridor in infants. Dynamic airway collapse is also a well-recognised entity in horses and an important cause of surgical veterinary intervention. We compare the aetiology, clinical features and management of human laryngomalacia with equine dynamic airway collapse. METHODS: A structured review of the PubMed, the Ovid Medline and the Cochrane Collaboration databases (Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systemic Reviews). RESULTS: There are numerous equine conditions that cause dynamic airway collapse defi

[Microscopic study of the arch structure of trabeculae in normal and necrotic femoral heads].

The trabeculae structure in normal and necrotic femoral heads was studied by means of scanning electron microscope. In normal femoral heads, most of the trabeculae were seen in the form of arch structure, and in which the mineral columns were arranged in different directions on different layers. In necrotic femoral heads, the arch structure of trabeculae and the arrangement of the mineral columns over unresorbed area were practically normal, but over the resorbed area, the arch structure of trabeculae was broken and collapsed, and the mineral columns were sparse and disorganized. These finding
