INTRODUCTION: Follicular carcinoma originating from struma ovarii is a clinically rare low-grade malignant tumor. The pathological diagnosis of ovarian thyroid follicular carcinoma is predominantly based on the infiltrative growth and vascular involvement of tumor cell nests of different sizes in the ovarian parenchyma.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here we present a case of this malignancy in which the bilateral ovaries, right oviduct wall, myometrial surface, omentum, and bladder reflex were extensively involved Microscopically, the thyroid follicles in this case showed infiltrative growth of nodules o

Struma ovarii (SO) is a rare form of ovarian teratoma in which the thyroid tissue constitutes over 50% of the tumor. SO comprise 1% of all ovarian tumors. We report the case of a 61-year-old woman who was admitted to the hospital because of frequent urination and dysuria. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass measuring approximately 16 cm in diameter in the right adnexal area. After transabdominal bilateral adnexectomy, pathological examination revealed a teratoma of the ovary on the right and goiter of the ovary with focal thyroid cancer on the left side. Subsequent total thyro

UNLABELLED: Struma ovarii is a rare ovarian teratoma characterized by the presence of thyroid tissue as the major component. Malignant transformation of the thyroidal component (malignant struma ovarii) has been reported in approximately 5% of struma ovarii. The management and follow-up of this unusual disease remain controversial. We report the case of a woman with a history of autoimmune thyroiditis and a previous resection of a benign struma ovarii that underwent hystero-annexiectomy for malignant struma ovarii with multiple papillary thyroid cancer foci and peritoneal involvement. INTRODUCTION: We report the case of a patient diagnosed with a struma ovarii with lymphocytic thyroiditis of her ectopic thyroid tissue. We believe that this case presents an unusual variation of a struma ovarii and a rare presentation of subclinical hyperthyroidism.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old Caucasian female patient who had undergone an ovariectomy and been diagnosed with a struma ovarii was subsequently found to have persistent subclinical hyperthyroidism with a low radioiodine uptake. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging and iodine-131 whole body scanning showed no residue or recurr

Struma ovarii is a rare monodermal ovarian teratoma in which thyroid tissue is the predominant or exclusive element. Malignant transformation is known to occur, usually as classical papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, the recognition of follicular variant PTC raises the possibility of similar malignancy arising in struma ovarii. We examined 13 cases of struma ovarii to determine if these lesions can exhibit histological, immunohistochemical, and/or molecular features of follicular variant PTC. Ten of these had atypical histology, cytologic features of PTC, and all ten showed diffuse po

Struma ovarii is an infrequent ovarian tumor, and there are only few reports with detailed data of thyroid function. In several cases, malignant struma ovarii have been shown to produce hyperthyroidism, but there is no reported case of hypothyroidism following struma ovarii tumor resection. A 62-year-old white woman underwent right ovary resection that had a pathologic diagnosis of struma ovarii. After 6 days, she developed weakness, myalgia, somnolence, nausea, and arterial hypotension. Laboratory tests showed a high level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and a decreased level thyroxin. INTRODUCTION: Struma ovarii is an uncommon ovarian tumor primarily composed of thyroid tissue, accounting for approximately 1-3% of ovarian teratomas.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 68-year-old Chinese female patient presenting with recurrent urethral outlet tumescence and an adnexal mass, whose diagnosis was established through ultrasonography, pelvic computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. Subsequently, the patient underwent laparoscopic left adnexectomy, and histopathological examination confirmed the presence of struma ovarii in the left ovary.
CONCLUSION: Strum

A woman in her 40s presented with a 3-month history of lower abdominal pain and intermenstrual bleeding. Ultrasound of the pelvis disclosed a 4 cm left adnexal mass. An MRI of the pelvis revealed a 2.2×3.6×2.4 cm solid, enhancing left ovarian mass. Due to high suspicion for malignancy, she underwent laparoscopic left salpingo-oophorectomy and resection of the tumour. Histopathology revealed papillary thyroid carcinoma in the background of struma ovarii as confirmed by thyroglobulin and thyroid transcription factor-1 positivity on immunohistochemistry. BRAF mutation analysis was negative. An ul

Struma ovarii are rare ovarian tumors, of monodermal germ cell origin, containing predominantly thyroid tissue. They are typically benign unilateral pelvic masses. Among the rare cases of malignancy, the most common histological type is that of the papillary carcinoma. A definite preoperative diagnosis of these tumors is difficult to achieve since most imaging findings are generally nonspecific. A rare exception is the case of synchronous abnormal thyroid blood tests where an ovarian teratoma should be highly suspected, especially when no pathology of the thyroid gland coexists. BACKGROUND: Struma ovarii (SO) is a specialized monodermal teratoma predominantly composed of mature thyroid tissue, accounting for approximately 5% of all ovarian teratomas. Thyrotoxicosis is seen in about 8% of patients with SO. Most SO cases are benign with only 5-10% being malignant, and malignant SO causing thyrotoxicosis is very uncommon.
CASE: A 64-year-old woman had been diagnosed with thyrotoxicosis 2 years previously. The thyroid gland was palpable with a micronodular texture, and the patient was euthyroid under carbimazole. She presented with abdominal pain and progressive enlargem

Malignant struma ovarii is a very rare disease and, therefore, there is neither common agreement on treatment regimens nor sufficient follow-up experience. We present a case of a 49-year-old woman with malignant struma ovarii of the follicular type, who received ablative radioiodine treatment after thyroidectomy and surgical removal of the primary tumour. During follow-up examinations an increasing thyroglobulin level was found, caused by a tumour relapse with suspected urinary bladder infiltration on CT and proven uptake of radioiodine on whole-body scanning with iodine-131. After administrat

Adnexal tumors during pregnancy are rare, with a prevalence ranging from 0.05% to 3%, and in most cases, they are benign. Struma ovarii, a monodermal teratoma, consists of over 50% thyroid tissue and accounts for 2.7% of ovarian teratomas. It typically affects women aged 40-60 and is exceptionally rare during pregnancy. Diagnosis is often only established after surgical intervention and histological examination. We present the case of a 39-year-old pregnant woman (gravida 2, para 1) at 19 weeks of gestation who presented with acute lower abdominal pain. At her first visit at 11 weeks, ultrasou

OBJECTIVE: To report an unusual case of persistent thyrotoxicosis after treatment of Graves' disease, because of coexistence of struma ovarii.
METHODS: We report the clinical history, imaging studies, laboratory and pathologic data, and treatment in a patient with persistent hyperthyroidism after surgical treatment of Graves' disease. In addition, we discuss some aspects of the pathogenesis of hyperthyroidism due to functioning struma ovarii.
RESULTS: A 42-year-old woman underwent near-total thyroidectomy for treatment of Graves' disease. Post-operatively, hyperthyroidism was still present.

CONTEXT: Struma ovarii, a rare neoplasm, is a monophyletic teratoma composed of thyroid tissue. It is generally considered to account for less than 5% of mature teratomas.
CASE REPORT: A diagnosis of struma ovarii may be the source of many diagnostic problems. It may be cystic and microscopic examination may only reveal a few typical thyroid follicles, resulting in confusion with other cystic ovarian tumors. Extensive sampling should be undertaken and immunohistochemistry may be decisive in establishing the thyroid nature of the epithelial lining. The authors report two cases of cystic struma

Malignant struma ovarii (MSO) is a rare malignant teratoma of the ovary composed predominantly of malignant thyroid tissue, often resembling papillary or follicular thyroid carcinoma. We present a case of Stage 1A MSO, in remission 5 years post-treatment, alongside a review of the literature. The patient, who presented with right-sided abdominal pain, had imaging that revealed a right adnexal mass. Pathology confirmed papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) confined to the right ovary. Surveillance included computed tomography (CT) scans and transvaginal ultrasounds, all negative for recurrence at 5

We report a case of 21 years old lady who presented with ascites, left adnexal mass and elevated CA-125. With suspicion of ovarian malignancy, she underwent left salpingo-oophorectomy with omental biopsy. Histopathology revealed: 'follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma arising in struma ovarii' with metastatic papillary thyroid carcinoma in omental and peritoneal nodules. Patient underwent total thyroidectomy followed by radioactive iodine therapy for metastatic omental and peritoneal disease. Post-therapy whole body scan, revealed extensive I-131 avid disease metastatic disease inv
