Increasing safe clinical spaces and the efforts of clinical research for uninsured and underinsured LGBTQIA2+ patients: A case study of the Rainbow Clinic - a student-run free LGBTQIA2+ clinic.

LGBTQIA2+ patients often experience discrimination and hostility in healthcare spaces. Negative perceptions of healthcare can contribute to poor health outcomes in LGBTQIA2+ patients. This population is rarely included in clinical trials through a lack of inclusion in study protocols, informed consent, and trials not addressing their needs and demographics. Many clinical institutions have created LGBTQIA2+-specific clinics; however, few have successfully developed a free clinic dedicated to this population. A Rainbow Clinic was formed at an established student-run free clinic, utilizing the ex

Learning experiences of medical and pharmacy students at a student-run clinic in south africa and the development of a framework for learning.

BACKGROUND: Trinity Health Services (THS) is a free clinic that serves the homeless community of Braamfontein. The clinic is run by pharmacy and medical students registered in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, assisted by academic staff. This setting provided an ideal space to document the interprofessional experiences between these two groups of students outside of formal lectures or clinical exposures. Therefore, the research question for this study was: What are the learning experiences of medical and pharmacy students working at an inner-city student-dr

Standardized Near-Peer Clinical Skills Training for Seven Student-Run Clinics: Assessing Impact on Student Confidence.

Background First-year medical students volunteering in student-run clinics (SRCs) often perform clinical skills before they are formally introduced in the curriculum. At some institutions, students are trained on an ad hoc basis by individual clinics without centralized oversight or quality control. Near-peer teaching models have shown promise in practical skills training and may benefit pre-clerkship learners prior to volunteering at SRCs. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether a standardized and centrally coordinated near-peer clinical skills curriculum (including modules on Vit

No symptoms, no problem? an analysis of asymptomatic and symptomatic sexually transmitted infections and the impact on clinical outcomes in a student-run free clinic.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major global public health concern, disproportionately affecting uninsured and underserved populations. Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) play a vital role in addressing disparities in STI screening and treatment; however, data describing infection patterns and symptom-based testing outcomes in these settings are limited. METHODS: This IRB-approved retrospective review analyzed 296 patient records from a SRFC between October 2019 and November 2023. Patients who underwent testing for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Trepon

The Fragmentation of Specialty Care. The Role of Referral Location, Type of Referral, and Demographic Factors in Determining Completion Rates for Uninsured Patients in a Student-Run Free Clinic.

Little is known about how location of specialty care affects accessibility for uninsured patients at free clinics. To address this gap, the specialty referral completion rate by location and role of demographic and referral-specific factors were analyzed at an urban-based free clinic. A retrospective review was performed at a single site, student-run free clinic exclusively serving uninsured patients. Referral completion rate and predictors of referral completion were examined including age, race, ethnicity, sex, referral type, and location of referral. Significant predictors (p < 0.05) were i

Association of Insurance Status with Patient Health at New Orleans Student-Run Free Clinics.

Since the closure of Charity Hospital after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans Student-Run Free Clinics have helped fill the resulting void in healthcare access for the underserved New Orleans population. To better understand the health insurance status and health outcomes of this patient population, 1036 patient records from seven New Orleans Student-Run Free Clinics were collected and analyzed between February 2017 and March 2020. Insurance status was significantly associated with gender, race, homelessness, and prior incarceration, but not with education. Substance use rehabilitation centers ha

Formerly incarcerated patient care in student-run clinics: substance use patterns and opportunities for intervention.

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated patients have high rates of substance misuse and are at an increased likelihood of mortality within the first six months post-release. Student-Run Free Clinics (SRFCs) are common amongst medical schools in the United States. The purpose of the study was to evaluate and understand the carceral history of patients served by New Orleans SRFCs in order to provide better care for these patients. METHODS: The data in this study was obtained from the REDcap surveys administered to patients of the SRFCs (n = 2,035) from 2/19/17 to 7/9/23. Individuals who filled out information

Describing the Medical Needs of Hawai'i's Houseless Population During COVID at Free Student Run Outpatient Clinics (Hawai'i HOME Project).

Hawai'i experiences some of the highest rates of houselessness per capita in the country. COVID-19 has exacerbated these disparities and made it difficult for these individuals to seek medical care. Hawai'i's Houseless Outreach in Medical Education (HOME) clinic is the largest student run free clinic in the state, which provides medical services to this patient population. This article reports the demographics, medical needs, and services provided to patients of Hawai'i's HOME clinic during the era of COVID-19. From September 2020 to 2021, the HOME clinic saw 1198 unique visits with 526 distin

Exploring stakeholder support for student-run free clinics to address gaps in non-communicable disease care in Ghana: An exploratory sequential mixed-methods study.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including hypertension and diabetes, are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Ghana, where underserved communities face persistent barriers to screening, early management, and self-care education. Student-run free clinics (SRFCs) may help address these gaps, but their feasibility in sub-Saharan Africa remains underexplored. We used an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design to examine stakeholder perspectives on and support for SRFCs as a model for expanding NCD care in Ghana. Qualitative data were collected through six focus group discussions with

Evaluation of an Interprofessional Student-Faculty Collaborative Clinic in a Jail.

Jail-based student-run clinics, though uncommon, have the potential to impact the future health workforce. We evaluated, via a survey of student attitudes and a collection of lessons learned, a student-faculty collaborative clinic that was implemented in a jail in 2015. Clinic participation led to significantly greater student volunteer ratings of the importance of collaborating with oral health providers and of comfort in providing care to incarcerated populations. We report lessons learned regarding logistical considerations, volunteer behavior, and common issues arising in clinic visits. Th

When is an abscess more than an abscess? Syringe services programs and the harm reduction safety-net: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Syringe services programs (SSPs) are able to offer wrap-around services for people who inject drugs (PWID) and improve health outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old man screened positive for a skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) at an SSP and was referred to a weekly on-site student-run wound care clinic. He was evaluated by first- and third-year medical students, and volunteer attending physicians determined that the infection was too severe to be managed on site. Students escorted the patient to the emergency department, where he was diagnosed with a methicillin-resistant

Evaluating the Impact of Participating in KNIGHTS (Keeping Neighbors In Good Health Through Service) Clinic on Clinical Performance and Skills Development.

Introduction Student-run free clinics provide early clinical exposure for preclinical medical students and are associated with improved self-reported confidence and preparedness. However, there is limited objective evidence evaluating whether these experiences translate into measurable differences in standardized assessments of clinical competence. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) are commonly used to assess clinical skills, though their ability to capture competencies developed in real-world clinical settings remains uncertain. This study examined the association between par
