International journal of speech-language pathology2025eng
PURPOSE: To discuss how speech-language pathologists can keep up with stuttering treatment research. To inform junior clinicians and students of speech-language pathology about this matter.
METHOD: The issue was discussed by two university researchers and two speech-language pathologists who provide clinical services. Written conversational turns in an exchange were limited to 100 words each.
RESULT: There was agreement among the group that keeping up to date with stuttering research is essential for speech-language pathologists, and to do so requires a basic understanding of research method

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term stability of objective and subjective psychosocial improvements and fluency more than 10 years after participation in an intensive stuttering therapy camp.
METHOD: Ten former participants in intensive stuttering therapy (IST; mean age at time of intervention 14; 2 years) participated in this study. Outcomes of the IST at that time were assessed with the Stuttering Severity Instrument (SSI-3; Riley, 1994) and a questionnaire to measure the psychosocial impact of stuttering. A semi-structured video call and a general questionnaire f

PURPOSE: Stuttering epidemiology is reviewed with a primary goal of appraising methods used to identify stuttering in large populations. Secondary goals were to establish a best estimate of adult stuttering prevalence; identify data that could subgroup stuttering based upon childhood versus adult onset and covert versus over behaviour; and conduct a preliminary assessment of the degree to which stuttering features as a co-occurring diagnosis.
METHODS: Systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines. Quality assessment was based on the Joanna Briggs Institute Prevalence Critical Appraisal Tool, w

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Developmental stuttering and Tourette syndrome (TS) are common neurodevelopmental disorders. Although disfluencies may co-occur in TS, their type and frequency do not always represent pure stuttering. Conversely, core symptoms of stuttering may be accompanied by physical concomitants (PCs) that can be confused for tics. This scoping review aimed to explore the similarities and differences between stuttering and tics in terms of epidemiology, comorbidities, phenomenology, evolution, physiopathology, and treatment. We also described the nature of PCs in stuttering and dis

General vulnerability to stuttering is the broad awareness of stuttering and the ever-present, experiential sense of a person who stutters (PWS). It is defined by stuttering in all its forms and the awareness of its presence, both in moments of stuttering and moments of perceivably fluent speech. Under the heading of general vulnerability to stuttering is specific vulnerability to stuttering, which includes the actual events of stuttering (i.e., overt symptoms, covert symptoms, subperceptual stuttering, and anticipation of stuttering). The differentiation between the two is that specific vulne

BACKGROUND: Stuttering development in preschool children might be influenced by parents' concern, awareness and knowledge. Indirect treatment may therefore be appropriate. Intervention in a group format has been shown to be positive for stuttering and an online procedure increases the accessibility of the intervention.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to investigate whether an online indirect group treatment for children who stutter could increase parents' knowledge and confidence in managing the stuttering, reduce the impact of stuttering on the child and parents as well as reduce stuttering

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether 3- to-6-year-old children who stutter and exhibit a higher degree of behavioral inhibition (BI), a correlate of shyness, stutter more frequently and experience greater negative consequences of stuttering (per parent-report) than their peers who stutter but have lower BI.
METHOD: Forty-six children who stutter (CWS; 35 boys & 11 girls; mean age 4 years, 2 months) participated. Their degree of BI was assessed by measuring the latency to their 6th spontaneous comment during a conversation with an unfamiliar examiner (following Kagan,

PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical focus article is to summarize 1 possible process that a clinician might follow in designing and conducting a treatment program with John, a 14-year-old male individual who stutters.
METHOD: The available research evidence, practitioner experience, and consideration of individual preferences are combined to address goals, treatment procedures, and outcomes for John.
CONCLUSIONS: The stuttering treatment research literature includes multiple well-designed reviews and individual studies that have shown the effectiveness of prolonged speech (and smooth speec

This study aimed to assess the quality of life of children aged 2-who stutter and who do not stutter. We compared the quality-of-life scores between the two groups and analysed the relationship between their scores and sociodemographic data. We conducted a cross-sectional observational analytical study utilising a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 74 children in the specified age range. Data were collected using structured interviews (sample characterisation script), the Brazilian Economic Classification Criteria, and the Pediatric Questionnaire on Quality of Life (Generic Version 4.0).

PURPOSE: English and Mandarin are the 2 most spoken languages in the world, yet it is not known how stuttering manifests in English-Mandarin bilinguals. In this research, the authors investigated whether the severity and type of stuttering is different in English and Mandarin in English-Mandarin bilinguals, and whether this difference was influenced by language dominance.
METHOD: Thirty English-Mandarin bilinguals who stutter (BWS), ages 12-44 years, were categorized into 3 groups (15 English-dominant, 4 Mandarin-dominant, and 11 balanced bilinguals) using a self-report classification tool. T

INTRODUCTION: Stuttering priapism is a variation of ischemic priapism, generally transient and self-limiting, occurring during sleep and lasting less than 3-4 hours. It may progress to episodes of complete ischemic priapism in approximately one third of cases, necessitating emergent intervention.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: This review aims to provide an up-to-date picture of the pathophysiology and management of stuttering priapism. A search using Medline and EMBASE for relevant publications using the terms "priapism", "stuttering", "diagnosis", "treatment", "fibrosis", was performed.

For some years the dystonias have been the subject of major studies and, as far as the generalised dystonias are concerned, of major therapeutic advances. The opposite is true of the so-called focal or functional dystonias, which include conditions such as Meige's syndrome, spasmodic torticollis, writer's cramp, dystonias using instruments especially in musicians, and spasmodic dysphonia. For the last group, the term functional dysphonia would seems to us to be more appropriate. It would appear that what is involved is a disorder not of a muscle group, but rather of a function. Consequently st

Stuttering is a disturbance in the normal fluency and time patterning of speech. Developmental stuttering (DS), with or without associated psychiatric illness, is the most common form and includes all cases with gradual onset in childhood that are not the result of acquired brain damage. Persistent developmental stuttering (PDS) is DS that has not undergone spontaneous or speech-therapy-induced remission. Organic models of DS focus on incomplete lateralization or abnormal cerebral dominance. There is also evidence that DS has a significant genetic component to its cause. Neuroimaging research

Presently, there are a number of protocols available to assist speech-language pathologists in the identification of early stuttering (Gordon and Luper, 1992). While such protocols offer guidelines for differentiating children who stutter from those who are normally disfluent, the criteria for doing so is frequently based on clinical observation, and often suffers from limited empirical support. The purpose of this paper is to provide an update and "recalibration" of what we currently know to be the salient behaviors of beginning stuttering, and how specific features of these behaviors disting

A questionnaire designed to assess the prevalence of stuttering and its relation with: (a) central nervous system risk factors; (b) associated disorders (allergies, migraine-type headache, developmental dyslexia history, smoking, and drug abuse), and (c) depression symptoms, was given to a general population sample of 1879 Spanish-speaking university students (mean age = 24.0). A prevalence of 2% of self-reported stuttering was found. Results indicated that the prevalence of minor brain injury or dysfunction, developmental dyslexia history, word-finding difficulties, and depressive symptoms wa

For us to love each other we must first know each other. We come to know each other through communication, the purpose of which is communion. Traditionally, we think of stuttering as impairing this communion. Stuttering prevents us from sharing ourselves with others by distorting our message and increasing the effort it takes for us to speak. This need not be the case. Our stuttering is as much a part of us as any other attribute. For others to know us deeply, they must also know our stuttering. Likewise, for us to know others, we must know how they react to us - all of us - including our stut

No pharmacological treatment protocol has proven generally useful for all patients who stutter. Various medications, behavior therapy, relaxation, suggestion, and social-based therapies have been used. For this drug treatment study, two groups of adult stutterers were followed in an 8-week open label protocol. All subjects had in the past received speech therapy; none had been treated previously with medication for stuttering. The first group (N = 12) received a maximum dose of 800 mg of carbamazepine; the second group (N = 8) received a maximum dose of 400 mg of carbamazepine. Each patient se
