BACKGROUND: Misdiagnosis of spontaneous intracranial hypotension remains a problem, despite increasing recognition.
METHODS: Three patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension presented with typical findings on lumbar puncture, magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and radioisotope cisternography. All patients showed subdural effusions in the posterior fossa on axial T2-weighted MR imaging. Axial MR images of 112 patients with other conditions were also screened for this finding.
RESULTS: One of three patients had typical orthostatic headache, and the other two had continuous headache. The

The author gives an account of 17 children aged 1 month to 1;1 years, in whom uni- or bilateral subdural effusions had occurred. Etiologically, toxicoses due to infantile enteritides were made responsible in 5 cases, pneumococcic meningitides in 3 cases, and encephalitides in 3 cases. For 6 children it was not possible to obtain clear etiological results. It is emphasized that subdural effusions subsequent to toxicoses are perhaps a more frequent occurrence than has been believed heretofore. The clinical symptomatology of subdural fluid accumulations, which is described in the literature, fail

BACKGROUND: Although chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) has been known for over several hundred years, the etiology and pathogenesis of it are still not completely understood. Neurosurgical procedures resulting in CSDH are a rare clinical complication, and there was no report about how subdural effusion (SDE) evolves into CSDH after deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery. The formation mechanism of CSDH after surgery, especially in DBS surgery, and the effect of recovery, need to be explored.
METHODS: We present two cases, complicated with SDE after DBS surgery, serious dysfunction complications

Subdural effusions are uncommon but known complications of arachnoid cysts of the middle cranial fossa. They mainly occur after minor head traumas in young patients. Here, we report eight cases of arachnoid cyst of the middle cranial fossa associated with subdural hematoma in five cases and hygroma in three cases. Major symptoms are signs of raised intracranial pressure. CT scan and MRI showed the cyst and the subdural effusion. An excellent therapeutic result was achieved with evacuation of the subdural fluid via burr holes in the five cases of subdural hematoma while in the two cases of hygr

Mutations in the recently described RARS2 gene encoding for mitochondrial arginyl-transfer RNA synthetase give rise to a disorder characterised by early onset seizures, progressive microcephaly and developmental delay. The disorder was named pontocerebellar hypoplasia type 6 (PCH6) based on the corresponding radiological findings observed in the original cases. We report two siblings with the RARS2 mutation who displayed typical clinical features of PCH6, but who had distinct neuroimaging features. Early scans showed marked supratentorial, rather than infratentorial, atrophy, and the pons rema

Subdural effusion is a common complication after decompressive craniectomy for traumatic brain injury. While many cases are asymptomatic and resolve with conservative management, some patients develop significant mass effect, leading to elevated intracranial pressure, midline shift, and clinical worsening, which may require surgery. Current treatment strategies vary widely, with no established consensus. This paper reviews the pathogenesis, diagnosis, classification, and management of subdural effusion to guide clinical decision-making and improve outcomes following decompressive craniectomy.

BACKGROUND: Contralateral subdural effusion (CSE) after decompressive craniectomy (CSEDC) is occasionally observed. Cranioplasty is routinely performed for reconstruction and has recently been associated with improving contralateral subdural effusion. We sought to systematically review all available literature and evaluate the effectiveness of cranioplasty for CSE.
METHODS: A PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar search was conducted for preferred reporting items following the guidelines of systematic review and meta-analysis, including studies reporting patients who underwent cranioplas

OBJECTIVE: Decompressive craniectomy as a treatment is often used in the rescue treatment of critically ill patients in neurosurgery; however, there are many complications after this operation. Subdural effusion is a common complication after decompressive craniectomy. Once it occurs, it can cause further problems for the patient. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the safety and effectiveness of pressure dressings for subdural effusion after decompressive craniectomy.
METHODS: Patients who underwent decompressive craniectomy in our hospital from January 2016 to January 2021

We investigated 161 children under 24 months of age by CT of the skull and reviewed the anamnestic and clinical history. 87 children showed subdural effusions, and 74 did not. There were 33 patients with other pathological findings in CT, and 41 had normal scans. Age and sex distribution as well as localization of the subdural effusions were consistent with the literature. The 87 children with subdural effusions represented 1.7% in a sample of about 5.000 CT scans. CT was the most reliable method for diagnosis of subdural effusions, compared to other techniques. There was a preponderance of sm

We report a case with both traumatic subdural effusion (TSE) and associated hydrocephalus. A collapse of the sinuses is known to be present in some infants with external hydrocephalus, but collapsed sinuses have not been previously described in patients with TSE and associated hydrocephalus. Therefore, a preoperative magnetic resonance imaging venography was performed, with thrombosis in the left transverse and sigmoid sinuses identified. The infant was treated with subdural peritoneostomy. We hypothesized that an occlusive cerebral venous sinus thrombosis may well be the culprit, or an exacer

The authors reported a case of subdural effusion secondary to dural metastasis of prostatic cancer. A 61-year-old man was referred for headache, vomiting and gait disturbance. He had undergone hormonal therapy for prostatic cancer. He showed a mild left hemiparesis and anemia without bleeding. CT-scan disclosed a multilobular crescent shaped low density area in the right hemisphere. Under the diagnosis of chronic subdural hematoma, burr hole irrigation therapy was performed. Xanthochromic fluid was evacuated from the subdural space, in which no tumor cells were shown to exist. CT-scan on the 2

Subdural contrast effusion secondary to endovascular treatment is exceptionally rare and might be mistaken as subdural hematoma because of similar hyperattenuation on computer tomography. The authors present the case of a 13-month-old girl with a history of increased head circumference and developmental retardation. Cerebral digital subtraction angiography showed a high-flow pial arteriovenous fistula fed by multiple arteries on the right cerebellar surface, with occlusion of the right sigmoid sinus and severe stenosis of the left sigmoid sinus. Staged endovascular treatments were performed to

Subdural effusions following decompressive craniotomy for trauma are usually benign, ipsilateral to the craniotomy and resolve spontaneously. Far less common and more dangerous are contralateral subdural effusions causing external cerebral herniation. We report a case of recurrent contralateral effusion and highlight the management dilemmas. Arachnoid tear is probably the cause of these collections. Contralateral subdural effusions should be suspected in patients who have delayed neurological deterioration after an initial improvement particularly in the setting of increased "flap bulge" thoug

4 cases of subdural effusion occurring after radical surgery for chiasmal region tumors in children are reported. The pathogenetic mechanisms of this disorder are explained at least partly by a change from internal to external hydrocephalus or brain atrophy in 2 of the 4 cases, whereas the pathogenesis is unclear in the remaining 2 cases. In all 4 cases meningitis did not supervene postoperatively. The subdural effusion may be divided roughly into two types according to symptomatology: "serious type' which presents with severe symptoms and "mild type' which is virtually asymptomatic. The serio

One hundred thirteen infants, aged 1 to 18 months, were screened systematically and serially using transillumination for the presence of subdural effusion during acute bacterial meningitis due to Haemophilus influenzae type b, Streptococcus pneumoniae, or Neisseria meningitidis. Effusion developed in 44 (39%) of the patients during the course of treatment. Young age, rapid onset of illness, low peripheral white blood cell count, and high cerebrospinal fluid levels of protein and bacterial antigen were associated with a higher likelihood of developing effusion. Although patients with effusion w

Three patients shunted for non-tumoural stenosis of the aqueduct suffered from progressive clinical symptoms about four months after the shunting. Computed tomography (CT) showed bilateral subdural effusions. The effusions were evacuated, and the shunts revised. One month later all patients suffered from symptoms of increased intracranial pressure, and CT showed enlargement of the supratentorial cerebral ventricles. The effusions had disappeared. After shunt revision the symptoms decreased again. The fluctuation in the ventricular size, the thickness of the subdural effusions, and the clinical

We report a complication of decompressive craniectomy in the treatment of aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and accompanying middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction. A 56-year-old man presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage and right sylvian hematoma. He was diagnosed with high-grade SAH and medical therapy was employed. He showed rapid clinical deterioration on day 9 of his admission. Computed tomographic scans showed right MCA infarction and prominent midline shift. Because of the patient's rapidly worsening condition, further evaluation to find origin of SAH could not be obtained, and
